New Pioneer 4-H had Brian Gallaher as a visitor from the Department of Fish and Wildlife on January 8,

2014. Our club learned about what he does while he is at work, what weapons and tools he uses, and we

also asked a lot of questions about what he does. He also told us stories about what has happened before

while he was at work.

Happy Valentine's Day!!! New Pioneer 4-H made Valentine's Day cards for the elders at Warner View on

February 5, 2014. We delivered them to the elders and read the cards to them on Valentine's Day. All the

kids participated in making the cards. I hope they had fun!

Walk with a skip in your step. For March New Pioneer is having a challenge called the Healthy-H chal-

day. At our meeting on Wednesday March 4, 2014 the officers asked the group some questions about how

much they exercised and why it is important to exercise. We also talked about the 4-H day camp in Dev-

il's Garden. Everybody was very interested in doing it. Allison Deaton, Reporter

A Surprise Take on Science Saturday!!!A Surprise Take on Science Saturday!!!

Science Saturday was……Pretty Cool!

Photos and Story By Sydna Kennedy and Elias Antunez de Mayolo

Surprise Valley 4-H

We attended the second annual Science Saturday on March 8th in Altu-

ras. It was all about building robots out of pieces of wood, wire and

tape and hooking up batteries. Twenty-seven 4-H members came.

The Primary 4-Hers made Eco-Bots, which are little robots made out of

a toothbrush head, a tiny motor and battery. It spins around and can

even clean up little messes. It was fun to watch them scoot around.

The Junior 4-H members made “Can-Can Robots”. We used a big cup,

a felt tip pen, motor and a battery. It was tricky to put together. It took

me (Sydna) and my partner Dawn a long time to actually make it work -

we thought it might be shy, but during the “show off time” it buzzed

around making a lot of spiral drawings.

I (Elias) made a little car out of wood, wheels and tape. Getting the

gears to attach to the motor was the hardest part to figure out. My

Grandpa gave me some help and even though I didn’t get finished, I

had fun.

The other 4-H members made cars out of clips and wood (no engines)

and raced them down a ramp. It was cool! The most complicated robot

was the “See Hunt” machine. It needed to move and also float on wa-

ter. The kids who did this project used a lot of ping pong balls, alumi-

num foil, wire and at least one motor hooked up to a big battery. It was

very entertaining to watch. Some people got a little wet from standing

too close to the tank.

Science Saturday was a BLAST. We really didn’t have any directions to follow so it made us think about

how to invent something from a bunch of stuff. We hope that more 4-H members will come next year –

trust us – it was FUN!

Grove as they build their

Well, a lot has happened in 4-H these past few months. So, I thought I should tell you. (actually, I have to

tell you, because it’s my job.) Anyway, the first thing that happened is Science Saturday. I attended Sci-

ence Saturday myself, and, let me tell you, it was pretty fun. We made robots, different kinds per group of

4-H’ers. My favorite was the Eco-Bot, which was a toothbrush robot that moved like a little bug. It was cute

- and fast!

Presentation Day in Tule Lake was fun, too. Surprise Valley 4-H sent a lot of members and they did very

well. There were lot’s of different topics: Accessorizing, Making Deviled Eggs, P. B. & J.’s, Yorkshire Pigs,

From Wool to Yarn and many others! We also had some good presentations at Susanville last weekend and

a few of our members are going on to the next level! Congratulations! (I couldn’t be there, unfortunately!

Our Surprise Valley Schools were out for Spring Break that week, so we didn’t have a big showing - but the

kids who did go, did great!

Right now, our main effort is going into getting our projects ready for Home Ec Day, on May 3rd. I’m work-

ing on Sewing, Cooking, Photography and Fiber Arts. I know that we are all working very hard and will

hopefully get all of our entries done by the deadline. (Fingers Crossed!)

It’s Not Too Late! It’s Not Too Late!

Additional space is available for the Natural Resources 4-H Day Camp on May 17 from 8 am—5 pm.

If you missed the early registration deadline and would like to attend, it’s not too late. This will be FUN

— no paperwork — FREE LUNCH, BEVERAGES & SNACKS — and you will have the opportunity to

earn PRIZES, including CASH during the geocaching activity.

Please call the 4-H Office at 233-6400 to register as soon as possible. When registering, remember we will

need to know the names of everyone in your car (youth and adults).

This year’s camp is made available at no cost to our participants due to our generous sponsors: Modoc

County Farm Bureau; Forest Service; BLM; Modoc County Fish, Game & Recreation Commission; Natu-

ral Resources Conservation Service; and the Carey Ranch. Thank you so much!!!!
