PAPER TWO:

SUMMARY

Exercise 1

You are advised to spend 30 minutes on this questions.

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

The next time you throw something away, see whether you can reuse or recycle it. Many things can be used again or recycled. For example, glass bottles can be reused to store things, like spices or sweets. They can also be recycled to make new bottles. Old newspapers and unwanted books can be recycled, whereas old greeting cards can be made into bookmarks. We can send aluminium cans to the factory to be recycled into new aluminium products or reuse them as pen-holders. Old tyres can be converted into artificial reefs or for planting flowers.

By recycling and reusing garbage we can help make the environment cleaner, as we are reducing the amount of garbage. We can also save on natural resources, as we need not mind for more minerals to make new things. By recycling, we can also save trees from being felled to make more paper. Furthermore, recycling and reusing will reduce the number of rubbish dumps needed to throw away rubbish. We can use this land space for something else, like building houses or for agricultural use.

Rewrite the passage on the advantages of recycling or reusing waste.

When you study, find a place that is quiet and free from distractions. You can use the library, your room or even your kitchen for this purpose. If you don’t like studying on your own, group study can also help. Find a few reliable friends and agree on a time to study together.

Scuba drivers can do more than just check out the fish. Depending on one’s interest, one can specialize in the skill for pleasure or to make diving a career option. Scuba diving can be broken down into four groups: recreational, commercial, scientific and military.

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

Housing considerations in Klang Valley are primarily based on location. Prices and amenities are based on location as well. The closer the properties is to urban centers, the higher the prices are likely to be. Prices of houses also tend to fluctuate and potential buyers should seek the services of the reputable real estate agency.

Property in Malaysia can still be considered as being cheap and the choices are quite good. The apartments, houses and condominiums are of good quality. In the city of Kuala Lumpur, the choice of a property is influenced by traffic conditions. Many highways leading into and out of the city are regularly congested. Recently, this problem has even spread to some primary commercial and residential areas in the suburbs. Therefore it is prudent to find a location close to where one works.

As a very rough guideline, a comfortable house or apartment in the parts of the city which expatriates favour such as Bangsar, Sri Hartamas and Ampang would cost in the range of RM1500 to RM2000 in rental per month and a similar property in a quiet, respectable township further from the city center such as Subang Jaya may cost between RM1000 and RM1500.

Rewrite on the factors determining the choice and price of property in Klang Valley:

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

Dengue fever is a severe, flu-like illness that affects infants, young children and adults. It seldom causes death. The incubation period after being bitten by an infected mosquito is between two to seven days. The clinical features of dengue fever vary according to the age of the patient. Infants and young children may have non-specific illness with rash. The fever usually continues for two to seven days and can be very high.

In severe cases, the patient’s condition may suddenly deteriorate after a few days of fever; the temperature drops, followed by signs of circulatory failure and the patient may rapidly go into a critical shock and die within 12 to 24 hours.

At present, the only method of controlling or preventing dengue is to combat the mosquitoes. The government’s effort to check on the public building sites is not sufficient unless the public is willing to help out in the campaign against aedes mosquitoes. More than half of the households in Malaysia have breeding sites for aedes mosquitoes. When the government performs fogging to destroy the aedes mosquitoes outdoors, the public will be able to help by applying household insecticide spray indoors.

Earthquakes are natural disasters that can happen any time. Here are a few things one can do during an earthquake.

If you are indoors during an earthquake, it is very important to stay calm. Drop down on the ground and take cover under a heavy object like a bed or a heavy table. Hold onto the legs of the table so that you will not come out of its shelter. Being under a heavy object will protect you from falling things.

If you are outdoors during an earthquake, stay far away from buildings. The buildings may crack and collapse at any time. If you see any glass windows or doors, stay away from them. Glass may break and cut you badly.

Next, if you are in a crowded area, do not run for the nearest exit. Everyone will be doing that, and crowding will lead to even more injuries. Be calm and take cover under something heavy. Remember, being under a heavy object will protect you .

Teenagers are a confused lot. They are beset with many types of problems. First they face physical changes on their body which make them feel embarrassed of depressed. They become conscious if they are too fat or thin, have people or have hoarse voice.

They also face a lot of pressure from their friends. To make sure their friends do not leave them, they are forced to do many things that are against the school rules or law. Many break school rules, cut classes, smoke or loiter around shopping complexes and waste their time.

Teenagers also face a lot of stress from their parents. Parents are seldom at home to take care of them. Since their parents are busy working, teenagers do not get enough constant love and attention. Therefore they feel lost and lonely. Parents also give them stress by shouting at them and telling them to study all the time.

Finally, teenagers face a lot of emotional problems. They become sensitive of hot-tempered for no reason due to hormonal changes. They may suddenly scream with laughter or break into tears over a small issue. All these extreme emotions may make them depressed and lose interest in their studies.
