Instructional Materials
The development of the instructional materials for a project are a vital aspect of the
success of the project. For the project chosen, The Whiteboard Approach to Keyboarding, a
face-to-face group collaborative presentation is necessary for the success of all learners.
Working together as a class, the students will learn the keys on the QWERTY keyboard by touch
typing. The teacher will direct the process and the individual students will interact both with the
teacher and their fellow students to learn. The teacher will have the activity and screens
associated with each part of the activity projected on the Whiteboard.
To begin the project, the teacher will direct the students to find the keys on the colored
keyboard provided. The letter keys are color coded according to which home key finger is used.
Some prior knowledge of terminology and location of home-row keys is needed to begin the
project. The instructor can and should conduct an informal evaluation of prior knowledge of all
students.
The instructor will have the instructional drills designed in an eye-catching manner in a
PowerPoint presentation uploaded to Slideshare to project on to the Whiteboard. Each new key
learned will be color coordinated on the PowerPoint with the key being learned on the color-
coded keyboard. This consistency helps reinforce the keying sequence. The instructor will
demonstrate the finger technique and placement to the class. After locating the color key, each
individual student will practice typing the key & row on the Whiteboard using the technique
demonstrated by the instructor.

The next part of the activity will be an interactive part of the project. The teacher will
verbally demonstrate the three-stroke location-fixation rhythmic method to the class. The
students’ eyes will fixate on the Whiteboard while striking the keys in this rhythmic method.
Then the class will say the keys together as a group along with the instructor while fixing their
eyes on the Whiteboard. After doing this collaboratively several times, the teacher will direct
the students to practice individually using this method for several minutes.
The students will take timed-writings where the instructor will time them to see how
many words per minute (WPM) they are keying. This will be done after the conclusion of each
key which has been learned. The students will chart their progress on a teacher-designed
worksheet. The timed writings along with a summative assessment at the end of the project will
enable the instructor to monitor and assess the students’ learning and understanding of each key
on the keyboard.
Using the Whiteboard Approach to Keyboarding, the students will master the necessary
skills and techniques to learn the keyboarding while using the touch-method of typing. With
repeated practice during the unit and follow-up reinforcement, students’ skills in the area of
touch-typing should increase.

TECHNIQUE SUMMATIVE TIMED WRITING
DIRECTIONS: Open a blank document in Microsoft Word. Key your name at the top left-hand corner of your paper. Key the following timed writing when your teacher directs you to. Continue keying until directed to stop. Print the final copy & calculate the words per minute (WPM) of your completed copy. Remember, type without looking at your hands (touch typing).

1. Look at the number to the right of the last complete line you typed. 2. Then, if you typed a partial line, draw an imaginary line down to the
number scale at the bottom of the paragraph. You can count the number on the left of your line.
3. Add the two numbers together to find out your typing speed.
