PROBLEMS BASED ON AGES Exercise:

AVERAGE Note:

Note: (i)lf M1 persons can do W1 work in D1 days and M2 persons can do W2 work in D2 days, then we have M1 D1W2=M2D2W1 (ii) If M1 persons can do W1 work in D1 days in T1 hours and M2 persons can do W2 work in D2 days in t2 hours, then we have M1D1T1W2=M2D2T2W1

Exercise: (i) 16 men can do a piece of work in 10 days. How many men are needed

to complete the work in 40 days?

Page 5: Module: Quantitative Aptitude Numericals 2 Number Series 4 … · 2011-01-01 · > Numericals 2 > Number Series 4 > Problems on Trains and Speed 5 > Problems based on Ages 6 > Average

Hint: 16*10*1 =x*40*1 X= 4 (ii) 40 men can cut 60 trees in 8 hours. If 8 men leave the job, how many

trees will be cut in 12 hours? Hint: 40*8*x= (40-8)* 12*60 X= 72 trees.

(iii) A can do a piece of work in 5 days, and B can do it in 6 days. How long will they take if both work together? NOTE: If A can do a piece of work in x days and B can do it in y days, then A+B can do the work in xy/(x+y) days. Hint: A+B can do the work in, 6*5/ (6+5) = 2 8/11 days

PARTNERSHIP 1) A, B and C enter into partnership. A advances Rs 1200 for 4 months, B Rs

1400 for 8 months, and C Rs 1000 for 10 months. They gain Rs 585 altogether. Find the share of each.

Ans: A's investment = 1200*4= 4800 B's investment = 1400*8 = 11200 C's investment = 1000*10 = 10000

Therefore, the profit should be divided in the ratios of 4800, 11200, and 10000, i.e.; in the ratios of 12, 28, 25.

Now, 12+28+25 = 65 A's share = (12/65)585 = Rs 108 B's share = (28/65)585 = Rs 252 C's share = (25/65)585 = Rs 225

BOATS AND STREAMS Note: If x km per hour be the man's rate in still water, and y km per hour the rate of current. Then x+y = man's rate with current x-y = man's rate against current Therefore, x = !^( man's rate with current + man's rate against current)

y = 1/2 (man's rate with current -man's rate against current)

PIPES AND CISTERNS 1. A tap can fill a tank in 4 hours and another can empty it in 8 hours. If both

the taps are opened simultaneously, after what time, the tank gets filled? Hint: Let V be the total volume.

Useful Equations:

Short Cut Method Year Principal lnterest(Principal*9/100) 1 45000 4050 2 49050 4414.5 Total Interest 8464.5

3) An automobile purchased for Rs 15000/- depreciates its value by 10% every year. Find its value at the end of 3 years?

Short Cut Method Year Principal Depreciation(Principal*10/100) 1 15000 1500 2 13500 1350 3 12150 1215 4 10935 So answer is Rs 10935/-

3) What is the ratio between number of employees from finance and marketing departments together of organization B and these two departments together of organization D respectively? Hint: Number of employees in finance and marketing in Org: B

= 75+90=165 Number of employees in finance and marketing in Org: D

= 220+200=420 Ratio = 165/420 = 11/28

4) What is the ratio between the total number of employees from all organizations together in HR and Administration Departments respectively? Hint: Total number of employees in HR Department

=145+80+120+180+160 = 685 Total number of employees in Administration Department

=180+120+130+110+130 = 670 Ratio = 685/670 = 137/134

5) Number of employees in IT Department of Organization C is what percentage of the total number of employees in Organization C in all the departments together? Hint: Percentaqe= Number of emps in IT Department of Organization C *100

1) The difference between 42% of a number and 28% of the same number is 210. What is 59% of that number? Hint: (42/100*X) - (28/100*x) = 210

Hence X = 210*100/14 X = 1500

So 59% of X = 59*1500/100 = 885 2) If an amount of Rs 41910/- is distributed equally amongst 22 persons, how

much amount would each person get? Hint: Amount/ Person = 41910/ 22 = Rs 1905/-

3) Sixty-five percentage of a number is more than its 36% by 58. What is 23 % of that number? Hint: 65/100 * X = (36/100 * X) + 58

X= 58*100/29= 200 4) Cost of 24 bats and 32 sticks is Rs 5600/-. What is the price of 3 Bats and

4 sticks? Hint: 24 B + 32 S = 5600 : 8(3B + 4 S) = 5600

3B + 4S =700 5) Nandakishore gave 35% of the money he had to his wife, and 50% of the

money he had to his son. Remaining amount of Rs 11250/- he kept for himself. What was the total amount of money Nandakishore had? Hint: Money left with Nandakishore = 15% of Total Money = RS 11250
