WHEN PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITYWhen preparation meets opportunity, success is guaranteed. If we prepare properly for the future, we will be ready for every opportunity that comes our way. Once you finish school, you need to make choices about your future. There are not enough bursaries and learnerships to help everyone, so you need to take charge of your education and make sure you equip yourself with the skills you need to get a job. We asked readers to tell us what they think about young people taking responsibility of their future.

“I think that more jobs are needed for people with and without matric. The unemployment and poverty rate needs to be addressed.”Emely Nyatlo (35), unemployed, Mapela

“More than enough is being done to assist the youth. However, the youth needs to take responsibility and use the means available, like online resources to access job offers or find out about the skills required to apply for these jobs.”Samuel Mashishi (19), learner, Ga-Chaba

“I don’t think our youth is taking their education seriously. They don’t study as hard as they should and complain about the lack of employment opportunties!”Norman Mashele (44), security officer, Hospital View

“Even though many of our youths are well educated,

they are not finding jobs. Many thought that the mine

would bring more employment opportunities, but it can only employ a certain number of people. I would like to see more opportunities in the future.”Winnie Baloyi (24), educator, Ga-Chokoe

“The youth have lost their way when it comes to being pro-active. Relying solely on others for your education and empowerment only leads to a reactive nature, which will always hinder progress.” Mokgabo Mathatho (30), community relations officer, Mokopane

“Learners should finish Grade 12 if they want to find jobs in the future.”Lizbeth Thobane (41), task team member, Ga-Mabusela

“Our youth don’t always have enough money to study after finishing school. This is why they need to concentrate on obtaining matric and applying for bursaries.”Shibe Seema (23), unemployed, Ga-Seema

Traditional leaders were asked to source unemployed community

members between the ages of 18 and 25 who were interested in a career in mining. Of these people, 14 will be selected, every quarter this year, for free training in safety management. They will also be trained as front-end loader operators or blasting assistants.

The first trainees received safety gear and started their training at the complex in January.

“The trainees are eager to learn and realise that they have received a chance to change their futures through skills development,” says AEL

The Sekuruwe clinic, which Anglo American Platinum handed over to

the Department of Health (DoH), benefits more than 21,000 people in Mapela. The DoH and the Department of Social Develoment also assumed responsibility for the A-Letuke Drop-In Centre which provides assistance and meals daily to 600 vulnerable and orphaned children.

Acting Premier and Economic Develoment, Environment and Tourism member of the executive council (MEC) Seaparo Sekoati thanked Platinum for supporting health care systems in under-serviced rural areas like Sekuruwe. "This is what responsible corporate citizenship is about. Projects like this are life-changing for the residents," he said.

"Partnerships like this one (between Platinum and the DoH) secure the economic development of the host communities next to the mine," he added.

Executive head, corporate affairs, Seara Mkhabela said that the company has spent billions of rands to roll out benefits to its host communities. "It is about lowering the impact of mining activities on the communities."

PROJECTS BRING HOPE TO MAPELAHundreds of community members, as well as community and government dignataries attended the official handover of the Sekuruwe Clinic and the A-Letuke Drop-In Centre.

She said that partnering with the Department of Mineral Resources, the provincial government and the Mogalakwena Municipality ensures that development is delivered within the framework of the integrated development plan for the area.

Platinum funded the construction of the 608m2 clinic building and the 450m2 onsite staff accommodation. The DoH will provide staffing, equipment and furniture. The clinic has maternity facilities and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The A-Letuke Drop-In Centre provides an environment, conducive to learning and its many services include cooked meals, counseling, donations of school uniforms, blankets, stationary and toiletries to school learners; monitoring the performance of the learners; life skills programmes; home visits to HIV/AIDS patients, including those with chronic illnesses, awareness campaigns in the communities and health promotions at schools; establishing food gardens; and referrals to the relevant government departments. The centre also equips local women with sewing skills.

IMPROVED HEALTHCARE… Platinum handed over Sekuruwe Clinic to the DoH on 8 December.

WORKING TOGETHER… Partnering with government departments formed the keystone of the new Sekuruwe Clinic. Platinum constructed it DoH will staff an equipped it. LOCAL WITH LEBANG

It is my sincere wish that 2018 will see the Mogalakwena Complex and its host communities work together to benefit each other. Working together will continue to bring economic stability and real social development to our area.

People respond in accordance to how you relate to them. If you approach them on the basis of violence, that's how they will react. But if you say, 'We want peace, we want stability,' we can then do a lot of things that will contribute towards the progress of our society.Nelson Mandela

At the start of a new year, we instinctively compare our current position with

where we want to be. After taking time to rest and reflect, we need to relaunch our efforts and focus for 2018.

Last year saw a lot of good work in the area of social development. Our host communities are benefiting as the social and labour plan is bearing fruit. Communities have seen billions of rands invested at a local level. It's good to see what a long way we have come since the protests of 2015.

Mogalakwena Complex is an important source of employment and also offers other benefits for the communities surrounding it.

Empowering communities for a better life that will last beyond the life of mine, is a vital part of Anglo American Platinum's vision for the future. Mogalakwena Complex has been talking openly and honestly with its communities and with labour unions. The social performance department is working with host communities to identify projects

and to see where the complex can assist. We are working to minimise the impact our mining operations have on the people living in Mogalakwena.

The one crucial ingredient for these positive impacts to become a sustainable reality is collaboration and support from our host communities.

We need our communities as well as our employees to support the operation in such a way that production is not stopped or interrupted in any way. The people who invest in platinum mining are losing money because of market conditions which has seen platinum become the worst performing sector on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

It is time to put the past behind us and find a way to work together to make sure we keep our mines open and productive. This means a concerted effort to engage with the complex in a positive way when issues arise.

Using the channels available and working with the social performance team will ensure that issues are dealt effectively.

Let's focus on the good and how we can multiply it!

Platinum has owned Union Mine since 1949. The new owners, Siyanda Bakgatla

Platinum Mine, a subsidiary of Siyanda Resources, will take over ownership, control and management of the mine on 1 February 2018.

The handover function at the Union Mine recreation club was attended by Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane, Premier of North West Province Supra Mahumapelo, as well as Acting Premier of Limpopo Seaparo Sekoati. Siyanda Resources was represented by executive chairman Lindani Mthwa, and the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela by Kgosi Nyalala Pilane.

CELEBRATING A NEW DAWNBy concluding the sale of Union Mine, Anglo American Platinum collectively, with the mine’s new owners Siyanda Resources and partners the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela, are creating a new dawn for the mine. This is worthy of a celebration, said CEO Chris Griffith at the ceremonial handover of the operation on 26 January 2018.

Thousands of people have, over generations, worked at the mine to create a better future for their families, the communities and our country, said Griffith. “Today the mine provides direct employment to more than 6,000 people and it will continue to be a source of employment for many more years to come.”

He thanked Minister Zwane and the Department of Mineral

Resources (DMR) for supporting the transaction, and in so doing, contributing to the growth of a black-owned and managed mining company.

Siyanda Resources is in a position to become the leading 100% BEE-owned South African mining company, he said.

“We believe the sale is best for both companies, for the

employees and for the host communities, as in our hands as Platinum, we would not have been able to deploy the capital needed to secure the mine’s future due to competing priorities across our portfolio of operations.”

He gave the assurance that Platinum will honour its commitments in the area by handing over the mine in

a responsible way and will complete all its social and labour plan projects that are outstanding.

“Platinum will continue to manage the Mortimer Smelter and have a purchase of concentrate arrangement in place with Siyanda and therefore it still remains in our interests to see Union Mine go from strength to strength in the years to come.”

“The purpose of the Platinum environmental award is to reward best practices and innovation at our operations,” says Platinum's head of environment, Hermanus Prinsloo.

“We look at best practices and what plans are in place to save costs, benefit communities and to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.”

Mogalakwena Complex received the 2017 Platinum Environmental Award for consistent performance excellence at the year-end Platinum environmental workshop forum held in Bela-Bela on 1 December.

Prinsloo said that

DUNG BEETLE STAYS WITH MOGALAKWENA!

The environmental team at Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena Complex won the coveted 2017 Platinum Environmental Award for the second year in a row.

Mogalakwena Complex is a large, complex site that scored consistently well for the past two years. The clincher was the complex’s new Bioremediation facility, which was opened in September and will treat 20 tons of soil a day.

Mogalakwena Complex environmental officers Gloria Mathipa and Carlvin Shiburi accepted the award on behalf of the team. “It’s really about teamwork and proper planning,” Mathipa said. “Environmental training supports long-term sustainability and awareness which spans not only the operation, but also the youth in surrounding communities.”

ACCEPTING THE AWARD... The Mogalakwena team was the 2017 Platinum Environmental Award winners. The award is named after the Dung Beetle because of this insect's ability to benefit the environment in so many ways, including being able to do more to improve the soil than any other organism or fertiliser. Celebrating the award are, from left, environmental officer, safety and sustainable development Gloria Mathipa; Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) manager Frans Marais; Platinum operations environmental lead Hermanus Prinsloo; water officer Riaan van Zyl; environmental assistant Carlvin Shiburi; mineral resources manager and acting general manager Hendrik van Niekerk; environmental assistant Neo Selemela Methekga; and environmental manager Frank Pieterse.

“What the judges found impressive was the site’s ability to assist other operations to treat hydrocarbon contaminated soil to such an extent that it can be used for the rehabilitation of mine dumps.” Platinum environmental lead Hermanus Prinsloo ”“CLEAN SOIL... Mogalakwena contaminates about 150t of soil each month. The new bioremediation site neutralises contaminated soil within 30 minutes. Contaminated soil is stored in skips (below), processed and treated. The treated soil is stored in concrete bins (right) until the hydrocarbon content has been analysed,

WATER CONSERVEDIS LIFE PRESERVED!

With more than 90% of Anglo American Platinum’s mines in water-stressed areas in the Limpopo and North West provinces, we have intitiated and are part of various water management programmes both in our operations and the water catchment areas in which we operate. Not having enough water to meet in needs is a global challenge. About 2.8 billion people around the world do not have enough water for at least one month out of every year and more than 1.2 billion people lack can’t get clean drinking water.

We all have a role to play in protecting this precious natural resource. We need to always be conscious of our water use and make a habit of saving water.

LET’S ALL WORK TOGETHER TO SAVE WATER!We want to hear from you! Send your water-saving stories and pictures to [email protected].

WE HAVE TO SAVE

WATER!Water supply in Mogalakwena is under pressure because of an increase in demand. Many parts of South Africa are experiencing severe drought and saving water must be a key part of our daily lives. In fact, we should continuously save water whether or not there is a water shortage. Here are some water-saving tips for your home...

• Take a short shower rather than a bath.• Consider fitting a low-flow shower head. • Place a bucket in the shower and use the collected water to flush the toilet, wash clothes or water plants.• Place a brick in the toilet cistern to reduce the volume of each flush.• Regularly check your plumbing and repair all leaks and dripping taps as soon as possible.• Use a rain barrel to catch water from your roof and use this to water plants.• Teach children to turn the tap off when brushing their teeth. They should turn the tap off while they soap their hands.• Keep a large jug of water or bottles in the fridge.• Don’t run the dishwasher or washing machine until it’s full.• Water outdoor plants in the early morning or in the evening so that less water evaporate.• Clean your car using soapy water not a hose.

The Ramsar Convention focuses on the conservation of all wetland and water

resources. These include all inland water bodies and some shallow coral reefs. Wetlands are the most threatened habitat type in South Africa.

Wetlands are a vital component of the freshwater cycle. Their conservation and sustainable use must be an integral part of any solution to the freshwater crisis. Wetlands provide freshwater, so maintaining healthy freshwater wetlands means securing water supply. Inland wetlands act as natural sponges helping to prevent flooding, while releasing water downstream in drier periods. They provide drinking water and protect river and estuarine habitats.

WATER IS PRECIOUS!'Wetlands for a sustainable urban future' was the theme for World Wetlands Day on 2 February. Since 1900, about two-thirds of all of the planet’s wetlands have been destroyed. South Africa has already lost more than half its wetlands. No water source, ecosystem or habitat is materially affected by Mogalakwena Complex's extraction and use of water.

Mogalakwena Complex met 63% of its operational water requirements by recycling and reusing water from internal sewage plants.

Without water, the complex cannot run its mining and processing operations. To maintain its licence to operate, it cannot degrade water quality, or compromise other users' right of access to this precious resource.

Anglo American Platinum works continuously to decrease its water usage and to migate threats to the water ecosystem. Given the dire state of water supply across the Western and Eastern Cape, there is no better time to emphasise the importance of our water ecosystems, including not only our rivers and streams, but also wetlands.

Platinum has developed a bulk-water strategy and infrastructure plan to safeguard water availability for its operations and surrounding communities. It includes: implementing water-saving projects, identifying new water sources and augmenting current water supplies with post-consumer treated wastewater.

HOW YOU CAN HELP TO PROTECT WETLANDS?• Reduce your water consumption.• Don't litter or pollute.• Reduce, re-use and recycle your waste products.• Keep areas that wash into storm drains clean of pet faeces, toxic chemicals, fertilisers and motor oil.

CONSERVATION IS KEY... View of the Nyl river that runs through Mogalakwena.

WHAT IS GREY WATER?Grey water is waste water that's left over from running a shower, the outflow from washing machines and dishwashers, and so on. It is mostly clean waste water and can be recycled to save municipal or borehole water. Use it to water the lawn, flush toilets or wash your car.

We live in a world that embraces the enjoyment of sound in all its

forms, ranging from personal entertainment devices such as smartphones through to high powered surround-sound entertainment units and live entertainment events such as concerts and clubs.

Most people are not aware that hearing loss caused by excessive noise exposure is irreversible.

“NIHL happens because excessive noise damages some of the hearing mechanisms in the inner ear,” says Tally Sherban, a client relations executive at Oticon South Africa, a leading hearing aid manufacturer.

“It’s not just the megasounds such as gunshots that do the damage. Repeated exposure to loud sounds will do the same,” she warns. Not knowing this, or ignoring it, means one in four teenagers risk NIHL at an early age.

According to the Code of Practice for the Measurement and Assessment of Occupational Noise for Hearing Conservation Purposes, SABS 083, no employer shall require or permit an employee to work in an environment in which he/she is exposed to a noise level 85 dB or higher without the use of hearing protection devices. But noise at work is only part of the problem.

Personal listening devices are all over. Many people use earphones while they jog, commute or drive. Music devices often shoot sound levels from 91 dB to 139 dB straight into

ARE YOU PROTECTING YOUR HEARING?

Exposure to loud noise when you are not wearing hearing protection can make you deaf before you even realise it! Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the only kind of hearing loss we have the power to prevent.

both ears,” says Tally.  “They do a lot of damage

because the small earpieces sit directly in the ears,” she adds.

“Being able to tune in to your favourite music any time and anywhere is convenient and fun, but the price of listening to high-octane music, day after day, can be very high.

Think holistically about your total sound exposure during the day,” says Tally.

“The simplest way to start protecting your hearing is to limit the amount of time you expose your ears to loud noise.”

DID YOU KNOW?Sound is measured in decibels (dB), where 0dB is the faintest sound the

human ear can detect and 180dB would be the noise a rocket makes

as it launches. In our daily lives, normal conversation would be at

the 60dB level, a lawn mower would be at 90dB, a chain saw at 100dB, a

rock concert would be at 115dB and a jet engine would be at 140dB.  Research proves that prolonged exposure to more than 85dB will

result in permanent damage to hearing.

HOW TO PREVENT NIHLTaking steps to protect your hearing is important.

•At Mogalakwena Complex, employees wear special hearing protection devices. It is important to ensure that these are positioned properly in the ear to ensure full protection.•If you are exposed to sudden loud noise, use earplugs. Even the foam earplugs that can be bought over the counter at most chemists help a lot.•If you don’t work at the complex or have hearing protection devices, stay away from a source of noise or walk away when sounds get too loud. •At home, turn down the volume on the television, radio, stereo and music device.•Never use a device at more than 60% of its maximum volume and never use one for more than 60 minutes a day.

"NIHL typically results in difficulty understanding speech, particularly in a noisy environment.  Sometimes the damage results in a condition called tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. This may be the first sign of cochlear damage. Damage to your hearing is a cumulative process. Once injury from loud noise is severe enough to be measured on a standard hearing test, the damage is substantial and irreversible.  NIHL can be treated with hearing aids."

Last year, as part of the Mandela Day celebrations, Mogalakwena Complex built a house for Jan and Nelly Tjale in Skimming Phase 2. The house was handed over to the family in November.

Tjale is a disabled man who was born in Skimming. He now lives in the new three-bedroom house with his wife, Nelly, and their three children, Observe, Kahlolo and Witness.

Skimming village’s headwoman, Ntona Raisebe Kutumela, asked the complex to help Tjale, who lost his eyesight when he was two years old.

The construction of the house was completed by local contractors Flanders and E42. Putswa Drilling supplied the family with a double bed and a stove. In December, Dust-a-Side decided to get involved. The family will receive monthly Pick 'n Pay vouchers to the value of R1,666 a month for 12 months.
