, ...ltI,'s C.mpelll.,s . • •Brighton and Hove Motor Club's annual Speed Trial once againpromises to be up to the usual standard. To-day's event is thesixty-third anniversary. A quick look through the programmes ofpast years is a directory of motor racing personalities. Many famousdrivers, both past and present, have shown their skill or had theirfirst thrills in motor sport at Brighton. You may well be watchinga future world champion to-day.

At the present time the growth and popularity of motor sport canonly be described as phenomenal, but with so much competitionfrom other events we still manage to attract a first class entry everyyear. The reasons for this are compJex, but the annual Speed Trialshave so much atmosphere that competitors return year after year.The number of competitors competing to-day is about the same asin previous years, but the quality is certainly up. It would beextremely difficult to forecast who will put up the fastest time ofthe day. Patsy Burt driving her McLaren Oldsmobile in Class 18must be a contender and it would be by no means the first time thatshe has beaten all the male opposition. John Williamson in theex Tony Griffiths Felday is another serious contender. The 380 BHPFord engine will give enough power, but as it is fitted with atwo speed Indy gearbox it might be a little "slow" off the line.Albert Rodgie has managed to get a Chevy engine into his Lotusand could also be a contender for F.T.D.

John Williamson has an interesting entry in Class 15. This is thelOt litre Delage built in 1923. In 1924 it held the world landspeed record at 143.36 m.p.h. driven by Rene Thomas.Class 14 has no less than eight A.C. Cobras, but all with the small4.2 litre engine. Past Le Mans winner Duncan Hamilton has fourentries with his son Adrian driving. Is he going to follow in hisfather's footsteps?Last year's winner John Wolffe has entered a B.S.A. Scout with a7 litre Chevy engine. He tells us the car was built in 1934.As usual there is the Bentley boys in Class 8, but not quite so manyas in previous years. Among the. saloon cars we have our usualselection of modified Mini's and Anglias, but fashions do cbange.It is some years now since we had so few Jaguars. It would appearthat at long last other makes of cars are just as quick.

I am delighted to have this opportunity of conveying mygreetings to all who are taking part in or giving their supportto the Annual Brighton Speed Trials. I have had a life longinterest in motor vehicles and have always been fascinated bythis annual event on the Brighton Madeira Drive.

The competitrve spirit has existed among motorenthusiasts since the end of the last century and Brightonwas early in the field in catering for this aspect of motoring.The sea front has each year, been the venue for speed trialson and off from the very earliest days.

1 hope that all concerned will once again enjoy theBrighton Trials and that the efforts of the Brighton and HaveMotor Club will be crowned with complete success.

To-day's event is organised by the local BRIGHTON & HOVEMOTOR CLUB, 296/7/8 MADEIRA DRIVE ARCHES,BRIGHTON 7, SUSSEX. Tel. 63727. This is one of the oldestMotor Clubs in the country and if you are a keen local motoristwhy not consider joining. We have some sort of competitive eventonce a month throughout the year. ranging from Rallies, Auto-crosses, Gymkhanas and to-day's Speed Trials. Apart from this wereceive invitations to many other events organised by other MotorClubs.

Each year we sponsor an up-and-coming member in an internationalrally. Cibie, the manufacturers of headlights, give us a donationand this, with other monies levied from competitors, allows us topresent approx. £150 to the selected member.Apart from this we have our own Club Room with licensed bar,billiards, etc., where you can discuss cars and motor sport withyour fellow motorists. Why not join and maybe next year you canbe driving in the Tulip Rally.
