Our Innovation Partners Mohawk International and Spruce Carpets. The Background Two members of Carpet Recycling UK have worked in partnership to ensure that 7,000 m2 of carpet tile, i.e. 30 tonnes were diverted from landfill so that valuable raw materials could be recovered. The complete carpet tiles were carefully lifted and placed on pallets which were shrink wrapped to provide load stability and protection during transit. Spruce Carpets arranged collection of the pallets, and the tiles were sorted, graded and cleaned ready for a second life on the floor. Spruce is a socially responsible enterprise providing engagement and training opportunities for people excluded from working and the wider environment. They were recognized for their achievements in 2008 as winner of Social Enterprise of the Year from Scottish Business in the Community. Carpet tile re-use These tiles have been re-used across a variety of local businesses in Scotland including offices, warehouses, and shops, as well as being snapped up by householders from their retail outlet. Ed Ferguson, CEO Spruce Carpets said: “We are delighted to partner with carpet manufacturers by using our resources and experience to find the best options for re-use. Any product which cannot be re-used will be downcycled via the plastics industry if at all possible.” Carpet tiles with a durable nylon pile are an ideal product for refurbishment and reuse since their flexibility and rugged construction lends itself to a second life. The durability of carpet tiles is significantly higher than their actual life on the floor, which is why a re-use network is being encouraged by Carpet Recycling UK . Reuse has the capability of providing the lowest carbon footprint option. Mohawk International are keen to support Spruce in the community work opportunities created by tile refurbishment and expect this partnership to lead to growth in carpet tile diversion from landfill. “Mohawk strive to minimize the Environmental Impact of any product we produce,” said Frank Hobbs, Business Development Manager, “and this is a recovery route we are keen to pursue in UK.” Mohawk Industries was recognized as one of the greenest companies in the U.S., according to a 2009 ranking by Newsweek Magazine, and were the only flooring company to make this list Further Information More information can be found at: www.sprucecarpets.org.uk www.mohawkinternational.com www.mohawkgreenworks.com Innovation Case Study: Mohawk International partner with Spruce Carpets to keep tiles from landfill Carpet Recycling UK, Unit 5, Tudor House, Bramhall, Cheshire SK7 2DG Tel: 0161 440 8325 email: [email protected] web: www.carpetrecyclinguk.com
