Message from the Chair:

It is my pleasure to present the Mohawk College Foundation 2014-15 Annual Report, highlighting our many accomplishments over the past year. It’s been another busy year at the Foundation marked by positive change, both within our offices and across the College’s campuses.

Evidence of those changes and our success are everywhere you look at the College.

We completed the Fennell Campus Renewal project and now look forward to achieving new milestones, including exciting plans for the Stoney Creek Campus.

It’s been a year of change for me as well, as 2015 marks my final year as Chair. It has been an honour to serve the Mohawk College community and I look forward to watching the Foundation continue to grow and thrive under the expert guidance of incoming Chair, Pat McKay.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Trevor Clark, the new Executive Director of the Mohawk College Foundation. Trevor’s leadership and wealth of experience in fundraising and strategic planning will be a tremendous asset to the Foundation and to the College.

To Mohawk College and Mohawk College Foundation President Ron McKerlie, as well as our Foundation staff and board members, congratulations on a very successful year and thanks for your hard work, dedication and support. Sincere thank you as well to the businesses, individuals, charities and alumni whose support shapes the success of the College and our students.

I wish you all the best in the coming year!

Message from the President:

The past 10 months have been an incredible experience for me. There are not many jobs where you make such a tangible difference in the lives of so many people every single day. I am privileged to count myself among them.

Each day I am reminded of how fortunate I am to serve our talented students and to support the work of our remarkable faculty and staff. I am also blessed to work with you, our amazing supporters and community partners.

Thanks to people like you, Mohawk is number one in overall student satisfaction among all Colleges in the GTHA for the fifth year in a row. Your gifts help us reward excellence

and offer support for students in financial need. They help us improve programs, expand services and build exceptional facilities that help make sure every student at every campus has a great college experience.

The Foundation’s job is to connect the College to the donors who can make that happen. Having great staff and a strong Board make that job easier. We are fortunate to have both, and I am grateful for the work they do in support of our students and college.

I am also pleased to introduce a new addition to the Foundation team in 2015. Trevor Clark has been appointed to the role of Executive Director of the Mohawk College Foundation. He is an accomplished leader and brings fundraising, program development & implementation and strategic planning expertise from healthcare, academic and social work organizations. These include the Alzheimer Society Foundation, where he served as Executive Director, Queen’s University and the SickKids Hospital Foundation. I look forward to working with Trevor very much and encourage you to welcome him to the Mohawk family.

I’d also like to thank our outgoing Chair, Sharon Lax. Sharon is leaving the Foundation Board after three years of service. She has provided exceptional leadership through a period of change at the Foundation. I wish her well and I look forward to working with incoming Chair, Pat McKay.

It will be a busy year for the Foundation. Our Stoney Creek Renewal Campaign is kicking into high gear and will result in some exciting changes to our Skilled Trades campus. You will read more about this in the following pages of this report. At the same time, we continue to plan for a major redevelopment of the Engineering Technology wing at the Fennell Campus. We hope to have more news on that in the months ahead.

There’s a lot happening at Mohawk, and I want to thank you for making it possible. Whether it’s a donation to a capital campaign or to a scholarship or bursary, your gifts touch the lives of women and men who are reaching for their dreams. In return, Mohawk gives you exceptional graduates. Talented people who are eager for success and ready to make a difference in our community.

Thank you for supporting Mohawk.

Regards,

Ron J. McKerlie, President

Mohawk College transforms lives and strengthens communities, and has been doing so for almost 50 years. Mohawk has undergone a remarkable transformation itself with the vision of providing the best learning environ-ments possible for its students. Thanks to community partnerships and donor investments in capital improvements, and student scholarships and bursaries, Mohawk continues to be a leader in College education. Ensuring that each and every student becomes a Future Ready graduate is our primary concern, and we are grateful to our donors for their role in our student’s journey.

Mohawk College is committed to ensuring that each of its three campuses provide students with a holistic learning environment. Over the past year there have been some remarkable changes at the Stoney Creek Campus that resonate with our students, faculty and staff. Thanks to a transformational gift of $500,000 from the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA), the MSA Fitness Centre is now open. The project has also seen improvements to office space, collaborative study areas and other amenities. More exciting changes are just around the corner as construction plans and fundraising for Phase II of the Stoney Creek Renewal are underway.

Mohawk has flourished thanks to another major investment from long-time collaborator Hydro One, who completed its $750,000 pledge this year. The gift was a result of Hydro One’s Consortium Partnership Program with Mohawk and several other colleges. With this gift, Hydro One assisted the Faculty of Engineering Technology to make lab improvements, purchase new lab equipment and create new courses reflective of best practices. They also directed $200,000 to the to the transformational Fennell Campus Renewal Campaign.

Mohawk College also pays significant attention to the quality of the overall student experience. A recent gift from the Moving Forward Together Campaign invested a total of $140,000 for the Gathering Place and to establish the Student

Many donors choose to establish awards as permanent endowments so that they can help students in perpetuity. There are 269 endowed awards that will serve as a source of support for generations of Mohawk students. This year, several donors chose to join these ranks and establish endowed awards: o Sixty Three Foundation Bursary o Nicholas Morelli UA Local 67 Memorial Scholarship o General Access Bursary

Several endowed awards were presented to students for the first time in 2014/15: o GWD Foundation for Kids Bursary o OACETT Engineering Technology Award o Rob MacIsaac Future Ready Bursary (Access)

Ron McKerlie presided over his first President’s Golf Classic last fall. He took the opportunity to meet each golfer, and even hit a tee shot to help each foursome advance their game. Ron and the 144 participants helped to raise more than $42,000 to make education accessible for all thanks to the generosity of donors like Ike Ahmed, and our incredible sponsors: Perkins+Will, Stokoe Communications, Skyway Lawn Equipment Ltd., Dell Canada Inc., Scotia Bank, Business Insurance Services Inc., L-3 Wescam, Horizon Utilities Corporation, Pioneer Energy LP, Hicks Morley, and UA Local 67. The President hosts his next Golf Classic on September 24, 2015.

Other signature events in the beginning of the 2015-16 year include the 9th Annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit which raised an amazing $73,000 in support of the Stoney Creek Campus Renewal Project. Our gratitude to the Marshall Family for their unwavering generosity and leadership. Additionally, the Partnership Dinner (formerly the President’s Dinner) with the Hamilton Community Foundation brought together over 450 members of our community and raised over $53,000 in support of access to post-secondary education.

Support Fund. The Gathering Place will promote First Nations, Metis and Inuit culture and will function as a permanent interactive art exhibit while providing practical experience to students in the Horticulture and Urban Planning programs. The Student Support Fund is specifically designed to make funds available to students in financial distress when they need it the most.

Donor support for student awards helps to make a college education accessible to everyone. Scholarships and bursaries can also create a lasting legacy in honour of someone special. This year, two long-time Mohawk leaders, Cheryl Jensen and Linda Marshall, said farewell to the College. The Cheryl Jensen Women in Technology Award and the Linda Marshall Social Inc. Bursary were established in their honour through gifts from colleagues, family and friends, creating a legacy that will benefit students for years to come.

Hamilton resident Lillian Wherry, along with son John and daughter-in-law Polly, established the Robert P. Wherry Scholarship in memory of her late husband, a welder at National Steel Car for 35 plus years. To honour his dedication and passion for his trade, the family created a scholarship for Mohawk students with a focus in the welding and fabrication program.

Whether honouring a loved one, supporting a specific program or simply helping those students in financial need bridge the gap between poverty and prosperity through education, our generous donors are having a positive effect on individual families and the greater community. Noteworthy awards include: o Ike and Shahnaz Ahmed Access Bursary o MCACES 30th Anniversary Scholarship o Samuel, Son & Co., Limited Bursary o guard.me Student Support Fund o The Agency Scholarship

“I am truly grateful… not only for the help you have given my family, though that is immense, but also because it means so very much to know that the community and business leaders in your organization care about students.

Whether we are just beginning our journey into adulthood, or are taking the risk of carving a new path for our lives after choosing to leave the safety of a life we’d already built. ”

Mohawk College students thrive in learning environments designed to provide hands-on training with equipment and resources they can expect to encounter on the job as they begin their career. Industry partners generously donate equipment, software and other supplies that are game-changers. This year, the Aviation Program received a Boeing 727 from Kelowna Flightcraft. Tony Thoma, Dean of Engineering Technology, says: “This remarkable gift provides our Aviation students with a hands-on learning experience like no other. The opportunity to learn and practice real-world skills on a mid-sized jet such as the 727 is invaluable in ensuring our students are work-ready when they graduate.”

Other gifts in kind this year include two electric vehicle charging stations from Schneider Electric. These stations support Mohawk’s sustainability initiatives and illustrate why Mohawk was recognized again as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2015 for the second year in a row.

Our successes over this past year are due in large part to the support of caring donors who recognize the value of a Mohawk College education in today’s challenging work environment. Mohawk is more than industry-leading programs, first-class learning spaces and an outstanding student experience. Our strength lies in the close collaborations the Mohawk College Foundation has fostered with our communities, local industries, governments, as well as the generous businesses, individuals and foundations who support each and every one of our current students and future-ready graduates. We offer them our sincere thanks and appreciation.

Working under the umbrella of the Mohawk College Foundation, the Alumni Relations Office is responsible for creating connections and lifelong success. We develop and implement a number of programs and activities designed to recognize, inform and engage students and graduates of Mohawk College. Our alumni fundraising events and affinity programs are an important source of revenue for the Foundation, allowing us to continue supporting the College, its students and alumni.

To ensure we are meeting the needs of our graduates we look to the Alumni Advisory Council for advice and insight. A highlight of the 2014/15 year was the annual Council retreat – an opportunity to come together, review our mandate and refresh the Alumni Association’s vision, value and belief statements:

o Vision – Mohawk College Alumni Association is the catalyst for creating connections and lifelong success o Value – Committed to engage and serve current students and alumni o Belief – We believe Mohawk College transforms the lives of its students and alumni

In 2014/15 we piloted the Alumni Mentorship Program, connecting current students with Mohawk College graduates. The alumni shared their insight and wisdom with students, provided connections to industry associations and groups, advised what to expect in specific industries with regards to job opportunities and the types of entry level positions available and assisted students in building networks. Based on the success of the pilot and positive feedback from the 11 students and their 11 mentors this year, the program will expand to 20 pairs in 2015/16.

Those alumni who graduated up to 10 years ago are part of the Mohawk Young Alumni Connection (MYAC). The group’s executive committee generates ideas and organizes events that keep young alumni connected with Mohawk, such as the popular TiCats Patio Party held at Tim Hortons field in the fall. This year the MYAC group was accepted as a member of the Hamilton Hive, a network whose mission is to be a resource for young professionals from across the economic landscape who are looking to start or advance their career and life in Hamilton.

More than 150 graduates had the opportunity to reconnect with us and learn about current Mohawk and alumni activities through the Alumni@Work program. This past year, three events were hosted this past year at Walters Inc., Gowlings LLP and the City of Hamilton, bringing a coffee break and

activity updates from the College and the Alumni Association to graduates working in our community at their place of employment.

A crucial role of the Alumni Relations Office is to celebrate alumni success and foster a culture of alumni giving. Two of our most popular annual events were held once again in 2014. The 10th Annual Alumni Golf Classic took place May 30th, with 120 participants raising $3,000 to support the Alumni Mentorship Program. The Alumni of Distinction Awards were held on October 30th to celebrate the accomplishments of eight outstanding alumni who have excelled in their careers and are giving back to their communities. Eight entrance awards totalling $4,000 were established by the Alumni Association in recognition of the Alumni of Distinction Award recipients:

o Ava Green, Communications Media 1981 – Creative Arts & Design o Paul Armstrong, Radiological Technology 1988 – Health Sciences o Anthony Frisina, Enterprise Business 2002 – Mohawk College Employee o Bronko Jazvac, Industrial Engineering Technology Management 1978 – Technology o Emily Baynes, Public Relations 2011 – Recent Graduate o Sharon Charters, Social Service Worker 1975 – Community Services o Ray Adamyk, Recreation Leadership 1983 – Entrepreneur o Brent Kinnaird, Business Administration 1994 – Business

The Alumni Annual Fund encourages grads to support the College by contributing to scholarships and bursaries for current students with limited means but unlimited potential. Now in its third year of implementation, the program has achieved growth in the numbers of donors, number of repeat donors, and the dollar amount raised.

We believe Mohawk College

transforms the lives of its

students and alumni.

“Having gone to school and now operating our business locally, we are happy to be supporting the College. We fondly remember our years at Mohawk!”

Heidi Burgess – Business Administration 1985

The Alumni of Distinction scholarship and bursary program continues to reap rewards. A special thank you to the 12 past recipients who established awards in their names: Dave Pond, Peter Rakoczy, Sue Prestedge, Kate McKenna, Steve Marsh, Mark Ruciman, Glenn Gibson, Michael Desnoyers, Ward Dilse, Jim Tatti, Linda Rourke and Connie Smith.

Other alumni giving highlights in 2014/15 include:

o $30,000 pledged to support student scholarships and bursaries o $1,500 to support bursaries to provide access to education for individuals living in code red areas o $20,000 in support of the Fennell Campus Renewal Campaign

The Alumni Relations Office is looking ahead to 2015/16 and beyond, guided in part by the results of the Alumni Engagement Survey, which was circulated via email to over 29,000 graduates, to obtain their feedback, opinions and insight on the services we provide. As we continue to strengthen our programs and services, we will be working this year to build our new “Reunion-in-a-Box” and Mentorship program, as well as increase engagement and awareness of our member benefits and affinity programs among our graduates. Maintaining meaningful connections with our graduates is essential to the success of Mohawk College.

Our alumni are the catalyst for creating

connections and lifelong success.
