ARCH DIES AT 21
Claiborne stallion Arch (Kris S.--Aurora, by Danzig) died Jan. 20
of an apparent heart attack, farm representative Bernie Sams
announced Thursday.
AWe are saddened by the loss of Arch,@ said Sams. AHe was a
classy stallion who had the ability to sire top-class horses that
performed well both on the track and in the auction ring.@
The 21-year-old, who stood his entire career at Claiborne
starting in 1999, was responsible for no fewer than 34 graded
stakes winners, eleven Grade I winners and four champions. His
progeny earnings exceed $53 million.
Arch=s leading earner was Blame, who was 2010's champion
older male after annexing a trio of Grade I races, including the
Breeders= Cup Classic over Horse of the Year Zenyatta (Street
Cry {Ire}). He entered stud at Claiborne in 2010. Arch=s other
Grade I winners include Archarcharch, Pine Island, Hymn Book,
Love Theway Youare, and Grand Arch, who annexed the 2015
GI Shadwell Turf Mile S.
Internationally, Arch was represented by English highweight
sprinter and dual Group 1 winner Les Arcs; Canadian Horse of
the Year Arravale; and three-time South African sprint champion
Overachieving.
Arch also sired the dam of GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness
S. hero I=ll Have Another (Flower Alley); and the dam of
champion juvenile and 2015's record-setting freshman sire
Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie). Cont. p3
MOHAYMEN BREEZES BULLET FOR HOLY BULL Leading sophomore Mohaymen (Tapit) worked a bullet five
furlongs in :59.40 at Palm Meadows Thursday in his final drill
before next Saturday=s GII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream. AHe
worked great and he continues to do well,@ trainer Kiaran
McLaughlin said. AThat was a really nice work. We=re a little
more than a week away, and we=re all excited.@
The grey has recorded four works since shipping down from
New York to South Florida last month. AI wanted him to go [a
half-mile] in :48 and he went in :47. It was a little quicker, but he
is just doing so well. He did it all on his own and he doesn=t blow
at all coming back. He cools out so quick. We=re all set. All
systems are go.@ Cont. p3

Trained by Frank Brothers on behalf of Claiborne and Adele B.
Dilschneider, Arch posted a 7-5-1-0 record on the track,
highlighted by a victory in the 1998 GI Super Derby and a track
record-breaking tally in that year=s GIII Fayette S. Bred in
Kentucky by H. Alexander and H. Groves, the $710,000
Keeneland July yearling earned $480,969. He was a great
grandson of blue hen Courtly Dee, and his second dam was
champion 3-year-old filly Althea. He was also a half-sister to
Grade I winner Acoma (Empire Maker).
Arch stood for a fee of $40,000 at the time of his death.

Stable=s $2.2-million KEESEP yearling purchase annexed the
GII Nashua S. and GII Remsen S. at Aqueduct Nov. 4 and Nov. 28,
respectively. AHe=s just always done so well except Nashua day
when he was a little naughty in the gate and in the paddock,@
McLaughlin noted. AHe=s been to the gate a few times here and
he=s been
perfect.
We=re not
going to take
him [to

going to be
good.@
McLaughlin
took the
Holy Bull in
2014 with Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile), and finished second
last year with subsequent GI Wood Memorial S. winner Frosted
(Tapit).
AI would probably like to see him laying third or fourth and
hopefully not draw inside, maybe draw from four to eight and
have a chance to be in the clear a little bit; although, he handles
everything great,@ the conditioner added. AI couldn=t be more
pleased. He=s doing great. It=s great fun. This is what it=s all
about. He makes our job easy and fun.@

DISSECTING MY ECLIPSE BALLOTby Alan Carasso For no particular reason, I choose not to make public myEclipse ballot until after the awards have been handed out, but Ifigured I would put myself out there and open myself up tocomments from the public and simultaneously critique myperformance. I=ll begin by saying that I voted with the winner in nine of the11 flat categories. With all due respect to my colleagues whose
last name is Clancy, forthe last several years, I--as do many of my fellowvoters--abstain from thesteeplechase category. Idon=t follow it closelyenough where I feel Ican cast an educatedopinion and feel I wouldbe doing a disservice byvoting off the pastperformances handed to
me with my awards packet. My strike rate in the humancategories was slightly less impressive. We=ll get to those lateron. There were obviously several >no-brainer= divisions. AmericanPharoah (x2), Nyquist, Songbird, Beholder, Runhappy. Pharoahwas always going to be a unanimous choice in both his divisions, though with the nature of the beast that is Eclipse voting, youjust never can tell. More disappointing (and I=ll be lookingforward to reviewing the NTWAB spreadsheet when it comesout) was that there were not unanimous votes for horses likeSongbird and Beholder and to a somewhat lesser extent forRunhappy. I couldn=t fault a vote for Rock Fall as championsprinter, as it would have been plenty interesting to have seenhim contest the Breeders= Cup. Unfortunately that did nothappen. I am as big a fan of Mohaymen as anyone, but it wouldbe difficult for me to accept that a pair of Grade II wins couldremotely trump three at Grade I level, including that wide-tripwin at Keeneland. Three saw fit to go Mohaymen=s way. Moreshocking is that there were three abstentions. Huh? Songbird got 260 of the 261 votes, the lone outlier going forCatch a Glimpse. I have nothing against that filly, but maybesomeone has something against Jerry Hollendorfer. In 2010, NoSuch Word--who didn=t even garner enough points to make thetop three--got one crazy first-place vote to deny Blind Luck aunanimous Eclipse as champion 3-year-old filly.
Most would deem my approach to the older female division as
highly questionable. Beholder was the clear winner, the Pacific
Classic assured that. I thought Sheer Drama had a season
worthy of a spot on the ballot with her two Grade Is. On the
third line, I opted for Wedding Toast, based on her body of work
and consistently fast races. I felt like Ted Allen and Alex
Guarnaschelli where it
came to this category--
something had to get
>chopped.=
Stopchargingmaria, who
four voters thought did
the best work in 2015,
was the one for me. Go
ahead, fire away.
Tepin got my vote for
distaff turf horse, earned the third spot on my Horse of the Year
ballot and would have gotten my support for most improved
horse of the year. Not that she had a great deal to prove, but
she certainly lifted her game to a new level in 2015, and but for
a few unfortunate bobs of the head, may have been an
undefeated champion. I honestly couldn=t believe she was 9-2
on Breeders= Cup day, but she relished those conditions and
really earned my respect. Happy for her to train on this season.
OK, now for the more disputed categories, from less
controversial to more. Honor Code got my vote for champion
older male. This was meant as no disrespect to Liam=s Map, who
had a really brilliant year, or to Tonalist, who was a monster.
But for me, Honor Code=s Met Mile--set up and all--was one of
the top performances of the season and his Whitney equally
spectacular. Cont. p5

Carasso Eclipse cont.
The 3-year-old filly division was a difficult one for me, as it was
for many. I started the season as a Stellar Wind fan, backed her
in the Oaks. I thought I=m A Chatterbox deserved a spot on the
ballot over Curalina--just thought she was the better and more
versatile/faster filly over the course of the season. In the end,
mine was one of 46 votes in favor of Found. Those of you who
want to deny these horses on principle--that=s fine, I don=t
begrudge you that feeling and I understand it to a certain
extent. Here=s how I approached it: for her to beat that field,
including Europe=s Horse of the Year and the best on the planet
at what he does, that--to me--was the single most important
performance turned in on these shores by a 3-year-old filly
during 2015. If my obligation is to vote for the horse I thought
was best, then Found was it. I get it. It was one race, etc. But her
one best race was better than anything else that I saw and I
voted accordingly. Maybe the time is right to institute that >two
starts in America rule.= But the fact that Team Hronis picked up
the hardware is hardly objectionable.
I admittedly went for Wavell Avenue in
the filly/mare sprint division and
reasoned that her win over La Verdad,
head-to-head, on the biggest stage, in a
Grade I tipped the scales slightly in her
direction. But I have a deep amount of
respect for La Verdad, and, again, it isn=t
like she is an undeserving winner.
When you look at the PPs for Big Blue
Kitten, you can=t help but be amazed.
From a maiden claimer, he has developed
into this country=s most reliable and reliably fast turf horses and,
though the category was a little thin, I thought he was a clear
winner. I was surprised by the 63 first-place votes for Golden
Horn and that=s to take nothing away from a tremendous
animal. I did have The Pizza Man on the list, but I had Flintshire
second in recognition of the single biggest race on the grass in
this country last year.
I did vote for Zayat Stables as champion owner and breeder,
simply employing the reasoning that you breed and race a Triple
Crown winner, you deserve to be recognized. I also think that
small breeders with big accomplishments deserve some
recognition and for that reason, Machmer Hall earned a spot on
my ballot for breeder.
I did not vote for Bob Baffert as champion trainer. I take
nothing away from the job he did with American Pharoah and
the job he did was spectacular, particularly getting the colt back
to full health in time for his historic run. Maybe this seems
illogical, but I couldn=t go in that direction. I was one of just a
dozen voters who went for Chad Brown, whose stats didn=t
match up with fellow finalist Todd Pletcher, but was right there
on a percentage basis and consistently gets the most from his
stock. How about that vote for Karl Broberg? OK, let=s
see....here=s this table...Broberg led with a zillion winners...I=ll go
for him. Sheesh.
I=m probably wearing out my welcome here, but there was no
way Victor Espinoza was ever out-
pointing Javier Castellano for Eclipse
jockey. Great being the pilot through that
season, but it was a record-breaking year
for Javy and that result was never in
doubt in my mind. The Pedro Monterrey
Jr. vote doesn=t merit a comment. One
addition here--I voted Florent Geroux for
third, thought he had a campaign
deserving of recognition. And Tyler
Gaffalione looks to have a bright future
ahead of him after easily outpointing Eric
Cancel, for whom I voted and whose star is also very much on
the rise.
The dust has certainly settled on the 2015 Eclipse Awards, but
I welcome your feedback, comments, critiques and admonitions.

Click for the Equibase.com chart, VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton or the Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree. The phrase quality over quantity can be applied in manyaspects of the racing business, but owner Jason Sciortino gavenew meaning to the principle when his colt Lex Vegascomfortably annexed his debut at Gulfstream Park Monday. Thenewly turned sophomore--owned in partnership with Susan Hill--is the first horse to compete under the name of Sciortino, whois primarily involved in small-scale breeding and selling. AI own [Lex Vegas=s dam] Seasonal, and I bred the horse inpartnership with Fox Straus Racing,@ explained Sciortino. AI tookover full ownership in a buyout from them after he RNA=d as aweanling, with the idea of prepping him and bringing him back[at Keeneland] September. We had a reserve of $39,900 on him
and he endedup bringing$37,000. Wefell a bidshort, so Idecided we=drace him.@ Sciortino, who assistswithprominentowners Susanand Jim Hill=soperations
while also managing their Eighth Pole Inn bed-and-breakfast inLexington, opted to send his yearling to the couple=s MargauxFarm to prepare for his juvenile season. AI work with Jim and Susan Hill and help out with the racingand bloodstock,@ said Sciortino. ASo he went out with all the Jimand Susan Hill horses at Margaux Farm. [Trainer] Brian Lynch is agood friend of mine, and he trains a lot of horses for Jim andSusan as well.@
After wintering at Margaux, the colt joined Lynch=s stableacross town at Keeneland in April. He ultimately traveled againas part of the trainer=s new string at Belmont Park, but theconnections were forced to stop on the larged-framed prospectafter he developed minor soreness in his shins. After spending90 days back in the Bluegrass at Margaux, Lex Vegas finallyreturned to the racetrack for the winter stand at GulfstreamPark=s Championship Meet. According to Sciortino, the dark bay appeared to be thriving inSouth Florida, leading Lynch to begin searching for a race.Nevertheless, when Lex Vegaswas entered in the 5 1/2-paneldash on Martin Luther King Day,the conditioner still expressedconcerns that his trainee wasone workout shy of optimalfitness and perhaps better suitedto a longer-distance race. Let go at odds of 7-1, Lex Vegaswas confidently handled byjockey Julien Leparouxthroughout the race and coastedhome to a decisive score, crossing the wire well clear of heavilyfavored fellow first-timer Drop Shot (Lemon Drop Kid). AHe got down to [Florida] and showed a lot of ability,@ saidSciortino. AI can=t say we were shocked that he won, but wewere very pleased with the effortlessness that he did it with.@ While Lex Vegas put the concerns of his trainer to rest on theracetrack, Sciortino noted that he still believes the sprintdistance of the debut race fell well short of the colt=s ideal trip. AHe looks like a two-turn horse,@ observed the co-owner. AHe=sgot a big, long stride on him, and the way he came home theother day, I think he can absolutely go two turns--we=re notconcerned about that. Going 5 1/2 furlongs, I think he just wonon pure ability.@ In the aftermath of the race, Lex Vegas displayed all the signsof a happy and healthy horse with some playful antics aroundthe barn. AThey had to put a lip chain on him because he was so fresh[the next day], bouncing around the shedrow,@ Sciortinoquipped. ABrian will make the ultimate decision [about his nextstart], but we absolutely want to go two turns with him. I don=tknow if it will be his next start--we may give him another shot atone turn by stretching him out past 5 1/2 furlongs, maybe 6 1/2 furlongs. But I think he=ll be at his best at two turns.@

No one would deny that Sciortino has more than ampleexperience in the industry, yet his name remains largelyunknown to the casual observer. The vast majority of his priorventures with Thoroughbreds have come in the realm ofbreeding and selling, and his few racing investments have comeas part of larger groups, including Fox Straus Racing. AThis is the only racehorse I have,@ said Sciortino. AI own two
mares myself, and I own a couple in
partnership [with friends]. We sell babies
out of them, and Lex Vegas is just one we
couldn=t get sold. It=s a very small
operation. It=s the first racehorse that has
ever been in my name, it=s always been
under stable names before.@
While Sciortino is stepping into
uncharted territory with his name on the
owner=s line of past performances, he
feels right at home managing the Eighth
Pole Inn in Lexington--a distinctive hostel
on the same plot of land that houses his mares, among others.
AI live [on the property] and am the co-owner of the farm,@
added Sciortino. AWe have a bed and breakfast here and we
keep the mares out here. We have 13 horses out here--mares
and babies. They all foal here, they wean, and we keep them
here until they are yearlings. And then they get shipped over to
Margaux, so we=re sort of the nursery farm.@
With an active Thoroughbred farm on the property, Sciortino
said he believes the bed-and-breakfast meshes perfectly with
the surrounding horse country and nearby Keeneland
Racecourse. As such, the Eighth Pole Inn has attracted myriad
visitors from both inside and outside the racing industry.
AWe get a lot of owners and trainers
who stay here,@ he continued. AWe=re just
a half-mile behind Keeneland, and you
can walk to Keeneland. It=s a beautiful
farm, and we have a brand-new state-of-
the-art barn. It=s just gorgeous. The guests
at the B-and-B just really, really love the
place. It=s a really unique experience here
on a horse farm where you can get close
to the horses.@
For the time being, Sciortino says he
plans to continue on with his involvement
in breeding and selling at the farm, with an open mind to the
possibility of competing more runners on the racetrack.

AI don=t mind to race--I=ve been a racing fan my whole life,@
acknowledged Sciortino. AIt=s just that it can be a bit of a
financial burden sending these horses to the track. But hopefully
Lex Vegas will help us out with that in the future. And I think the
world of Brian Lynch as a trainer. He=s a world-class trainer, and
being partners with Jim and Susan--they=re world-class owners
as well. So it=s made it a really easy transition for me to have

TWO-YEAR-OLDS SHINE AT BARRETTS
A slimmed-down catalogue for the first Barretts January Mixed
Sale since the company’s move to Del Mar saw statistics that
were nearly identical with those achieved with a much bigger
catalogue in 2015, with a trio of newly turned 2-year-olds
accounting for the top three prices.
A filly by Florida-based sire High Cotton achieved a final bid of
$55,000 from Kristina and Jerome Russell to top the single-
session auction. Consigned by H & E Ranch as hip 183, the
Florida-bred is a daughter of Canadian stakes-placed Think Fast
(Crafty Prospector), making her a half-sister to SW Ciaran’s Prize
(Yes It’s True). The Arizona-based H & E Ranch had acquired the
filly, bred by John B. Penn, for $45,000 as an OBS yearling last
August.
Halo Farms went to $45,000 for hip 172, a filly by the
expatriated Eskendereya out of MGSP Sandra’s Rose (Old
Trieste) from the consignment of Mary Knight, agent. Already
broke and in traning, the chestnut’s dam is a half-sister to three
full black-type winners, including GSW & GISP turfer Mananan
McLir (Royal Academy). Hip 172 represented a nice return on
investment for Jose Zulaica’s Valle Las Palmas, which paid
$10,000 for the filly at last year’s Keeneland September sale.
Knight was also responsible for the afternoon’s third most
expensive horse when hip 184 realized a final bid of $38,000
from GCCI. The March foal, a $15,000 by Valle Las Palmas at
KEESEP last fall, is a daughter of SW & GSP Tight Precision (Pure
Precision), a half-sister to MSW & GSP Therecomesatiger.

EUROPEAN PATTERN TOEXAMINE STAYING RACES
The European Pattern Committee, in releasing its changes for
2016 Thursday, revealed that it will examine the continent=s
program for stayers to address a trend in the decline in the pool
of horses racing at a mile and a half and beyond. The EPC
recently carried out a similar examination of the sprinting
program, resulting in changes to the pattern-race program last
year.
The EPC noted work is being done in Britain to enhance the
staying program just below black-type level, and other European
countries are expected to follow suit. A sub-committee
comprising the BHA=s Ruth Quinn, France-Galop=s Henri Pouret,
and Horse Racing Ireland=s Jason Morris will meet in the spring
to discuss possible enhancements at the black-type level.
The committee also revealed its upgrades and downgrades for
2016. Five fewer black-type races--a total of 846--will be
contested in Europe in 2016. Six new pattern races and four new
listed races will be run. Two races at The Curragh were
upgraded from Group 3 to Group 2 status: the 14-furlong
Curragh Cup in June and the seven-furlong Minstrel S. in July.
There will be four new Group 3s: Newbury=s Aston Park S.,
France=s Bertrand de Tarragon S., York=s City of York S. and The
Curragh=s Flame Of Tara S.
Europe will stage five fewer pattern races and nine fewer
listed races in 2016. Cont. p2
COOLMORE BUSY IN CAPE TOWNBy Liesl King
The first session of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale may have
started slowly, but by lot 37 a new South African record had
been set and a couple of lots later a new record price for a filly
was achieved, with Coolmore signing for both with partners.
Cape Thoroughbred Sales Managing Director Adrian Todd was
understandably delighted. "It is a great achievement for us to
have achieved two new South African records on the opening
night of the sale,@ he said. AObviously it was a very successful
first session, with a strong international buying bench. We are
delighted that major international players such as Coolmore and
China Horse Club were so active during the sale."
The first record was set when Mayfair Speculators and
Coolmore combined to buy Lot 37, a Silvano (Ger) colt out of
National Banker (SAf) (Fort Wood) consigned by Gaynor Rupert's
Drakenstein Stud. Cont. p3

European Pattern To Examine Staying Races cont. from p1
Two Group 1s were downgraded, both in Italy: the Gran
Premio Di Milano, which will now be for 4-year-olds and up in
June, and the Presidente Della Repubblica Capannelle, which
will now be run over 1800 meters instead of 2000 meters, have
both been downgraded to Group 2. Italy’s Carlo Vittadini was
also downgraded from Group 2 to Group 3, and its Omenoni S.
was bumped from Group 3 to listed, along with Sweden’s
Pramms Memorial S. Italy is also home to three of the four
Group 1 races in Europe at risk for potential downgrade in 2017:
the Vittorio di Capua, the Jockey Club S. and the Premio Roma.
The other is France’s G1 Prix du Cadran.
While Italy fared worst in downgrades, some positive news
came out of the country, which in recent years has faced
exclusion from the EPC after not paying out prize money. All
prize money owed to domestic owners from 2012 through 2014
has been paid out, and it was noted at the meeting the Italian
Ministry for Agriculture is working towards ensuring all prize
money for black-type races will be paid to connections within
the EPC’s limit of 90 days post-race.
Nine European races lose listed status this year: three in
France, two in Germany, two in Italy, one in Norway and one in
Sweden.
The EPC deemed the changes made to Europe’s sprint
program in 2015 a success, pointing to the fact that every
runner in the G1 Commonwealth Cup--Royal Ascot’s new 3-year-
old sprinting race--had earned black-type prior to that race, and
the winner of every upgraded trial took part in the race. The
winner was Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who went on to
add three Group 1s against elders.
“The quality of Europe’s black-type program remains strong
and it was pleasing to note that six of the 10 highest-rated races
in the world as announced by the International Federation of
Horseracing Authorities on Tuesday are staged in Europe,” said
EPC Chairman Brian Kavanagh. “2016 will see 413 group and 433
listed races run in Europe, a decrease of five black-type races
overall. The Committee will continue to implement the highest
standards of quality control.”
“It was also encouraging to hear more positive reports from
Italy, although their races continued to underperform,”
Kavanagh added. “The success of the new sprint program has
encouraged the Committee to adopt a Pan-European approach
to the staying division and we have established a sub-committee
to deal with this specific issue.” Click here for the full list of
changes.

new international audience,” said Tabcorp’s Chief Operating
Officer of Wagering and Media, Craig Nugent.
Tabcorp has also expanded its agreement with the Swedish
Horse Racing Totalisator Board to add a third day of Australian
harness racing.
Coolmore Busy In Cape Town cont. from p1
The bidding climbed speedily before breaching the previous
record of R5.2 million. Underbidder Jehan Malherbe, bidding on
behalf of Khaya Stables, forced the Mayfair/Coolmore
partnership to a staggering R6 million (£254,862/€333,022)
before the hammer finally came down.
Partnerships with overseas owners are a new venture for
Mayfair Speculators and owner Markus Jooste explained the
rationale. "It’s an extension of what we do in Europe, where we
have entered into several partnerships in horses and now those
partners are buying horses here with us."
"We were really
determined to get him," said
Derek Brugman, Mayfair
Speculators's racing manager.
"He is a fantastic horse, a
beautiful mover and one of
the most beautiful horses you
have seen in a long time. We
have bought him in
partnership with MV Magnier
from Coolmore and we
thought he was the horse of
the sale. With a little bit of
encouragement from the
Coolmore team we decided
we were going to secure
him."
Magnier was also delighted
with the purchase. "He is a very nice horse. Markus and all the
guys loved him so let's hope he is lucky," he said. "When I met
Gaynor earlier on today she said that this was one of the best
horses she had and she was concerned about selling him, so
when she says something like that it means a lot."
Asked about the investment in South Africa, Magnier said they
have been welcomed by the local industry. "It's been good. In
fairness everyone down here have looked after us so well and
they really have gone out of their way to help," he said.
Gaynor Rupert added, "I am very proud to have sold the colt
for a record price. He is a beautiful colt and we loved him from
day one. He is going to great owners.” Cont. p4

Cape Premier Yearling Sale cont.
Another South African record, this time for a filly, was
achieved when Coolmore teamed up with Andreas Jacobs, this
time to buy Lot 81 for R5.25 million (£223,004/€291,401). "We
already own Pine Princess (SAf), the G1 SA Oaks winner, in
partnership, and we are hoping to acquire a few more," said
Jacobs. "She is an outstanding filly with the best mare pedigree
in the catalogue. We would love to see her in the CTS Million
Dollar in 2018.”
Amanda Skiffington was a first time buyer at the 2015 Cape
Premier Yearling Sale and she was so impressed with the Var
colt she acquired during that visit that she came straight back
for more. This time, she
signed for Lot 88, a Trippi
colt out of Silver Apples
(SAf) from the family of
Triple Crown winner Louis
The King (SAf), consigned by
Drakenstein Stud. Despite
some spirited bidding,
Skiffington stuck to her guns
and the colt was knocked
down to her for R1.1 million
(£46,713/€61,055). "He is a lovely horse, a real 2-year-old type.
We are delighted with the colt we bought last year, but he was
more of a 3-year-old type," she said. "Hence we were looking
for a slightly earlier type and this colt fits the bill perfectly."
Lady Laidlaw's Khaya Stables made up for losing out on the
sale topper when the aptly named Hear Him Roar, Lot 125, a
Dynasty colt out of the Goldmark (SAf) mare Voice of Africa (SAf)
was knocked down to Jehan Malherbe for R2.7 million
(£114,659/€149,929). "I trained the mother and she was a
tough, speedy filly," said Dean Kannemeyer, trainer for Khaya
Stables. "He is a very well-balanced colt and of all the foals she
has had, he is the one with the most quality."
Justin Casse may have been attending his first Cape Premier
Yearling Sale, but four lots into the first session he became a
part owner of a Horse Chestnut (SAf) colt out of the Captain Al
mare Latifah. Purchased for R500,000 (£27,764/€21,234), the
colt is owned in partnership with Mick Flanagan and Mayfair
Speculators, and will be trained in South Africa by Joey
Ramsden. "I thought the colt was an outstanding individual and
it was to our benefit that he was early in the sale," Casse said,
adding that he was far from finished, having vetted seven
horses.
A couple lots later, Flanagan was forced to R1.9 million
(£80,690/€105,459) on behalf of China Horse Club for Lot 33, a
Var filly out of the Pure Prize mare Muamba (Arg). "It is the first
South African yearling purchase by China Horse Club,” Flanagan
said. “Some of the Club's members have visited South Africa and
it made sense to acquire some yearlings from here.
Var is of course the sire of Variety Club (SAf), who is well
known overseas and the filly is a full sister to Varumba (SAf), a
black-type performer. She just ticked all the boxes. It is early in
the sale and we are looking for more, whether we get them
though is another story.”
The session ended with an aggregate of R71,530,000
(£3,037,436/€3,970,172), an average of R656,239
(£27,866/€36,423) and a median of R425,000
(£18,047/€23,589). Full statistics will be published after the
sale’s second session, which commences at 5:30 p.m. local time
Friday. Click here for the catalogue.

Godolphin’s Safety Check, who went a perfect three-for-three
at last year’s Dubai World Cup Carnival, picked up where he left
off in the desert and indicated he is still at his best with a title-
defending and track record-setting win in Thursday’s G2 Al
Fahidi Fort on the Meydan grass. Fast from the gates but taken
back by William Buick, Safety Check traveled in the two path
about seven lengths off the fast pace set by Ghaamer, dogged
by his fellow Sheikh Hamdan colorbearer Mastermind. Safety
Check made a bid in
tandem with South
African shipper
Harry’s Son at the
top of the lane and
had enough in the
tank to outgun that
bay, who put in a
valiant effort in his
first start off the
rigorous travel
schedule from South Africa and will be one to watch later in the
carnival. The 2014 winner of this race, Anaerobio, also made a
late rally to just miss the board.
Safety Check was nothing more than an also-ran when testing
the Tapeta surface at this carnival as a 3-year-old two years ago,
but after a productive summer running on the turf in Europe he
was last year given his chance on that surface in Dubai. He
responded with a hat trick of wins including this race and the
G2 Zabeel Mile. The chestnut started twice in Britain over the
summer, finishing third behind Toormore (Ire) (Arakan {Ire}) in
Glorious Goodwood’s G2 Lennox S. before finding the Doncaster
straight too testing when 10th in the seven-furlong G2 Park S.
Sept. 12.
Trainer Charlie Appleby, who was recording his first win of the
carnival, said, “He just loves it in Dubai. The track itself and the
style of racing really suits him and that was a good performance
first time out. We were pretty hopeful and thought we had him
fitter for this return than when he won a course and distance
handicap first time last year. He won the Group 2 Zabeel Mile
last year and that will be the next target but he does work well
on dirt so, maybe after that, we will try him on the dirt. It is nice
to get the first winner on the board.”
Buick, who won two on the night, added, “He’s a legend, a
stable favourite. Tonight was tricky because there was such a
strong pace on and it’s difficult to judge when to push the
button. He has an electric turn of foot but it doesn’t last very
long.” Click for the Racing Post result or the free

HAAFAGUINEA (GB) (g, 6, Haafhd {GB}--Ha’Penny Beacon {GB},

the turf, and made a successful step up in trip here. Traveling
about a length off the lead through much of the early stages,
Haafaguinea took the lead under a William Buick drive in deep
stretch and had enough in the tank to hold off Al Saham (GB)

Older Mare-Eng at 7 to 9.5f, GSW-Eng $183,793}, by
Machiavellian) enjoyed a rail-skimming trip to earn his second
win of the season here. Victorious in China’s Chengu-Dubai
International Cup in April, Special Fighter then enjoyed the
typical Dubai summer holiday before resurfacing with a second
over this surface
Nov. 5. The chestnut
found the winner’s
enclosure under
Fernando Jara in
Meydan’s Listed
Entisaar S. over a
half-furlong shorter
than this Dec. 17,
and was sixth when
trying a mile and a
class jump in the
G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1 Jan. 7. Special Fighter raced three
wide and about a length and a half off the lead of Footbridge
(Street Cry {Ire}) throughout the early running Thursday. Stoked
up by Jara as the field rounded the turn, Special Fighter easily
overtook Footbridge in midstretch and was well clear as
Plantagenet (Spa) (Trade Fair {GB}) got up for second. Special
Fighter won by five lengths. A sidebar to the race was the
disappointing efforts by Godolphin colorbearers Footbridge and
Let’s Go (Street Cry {Ire}), who finished last and second-last as
the international favorites. “He ran over 1600 meters in the
Maktoum Challenge two weeks ago and went well enough,” said
Jara, who won the 2007 G1 Dubai World Cup aboard Invasor.

finish being a second in the G3 Abu Dhabi Championship
Mar. 15. Sanshaawes resumed with a third over this track and
trip Jan. 7, and enjoyed a rail-riding trip about a length-and-a-
half off the lead here. Switching out a path in midstretch,
Sanshaawes was driven to the lead by Christophe Soumillon and
held off stablemate Whistle Stop (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) to win by
three-quarters of a length. “He ran very well when third first

STEPITUP NAMED SINGAPORE’S HOTY Stepitup (Aus) (Hussonet), whose six victories from 12 starts
during the 2015 season included the first two legs of Singapore’s
older horse Triple Crown, was named the jurisdiction’s Horse of
the Year in ceremonies held at the Regent Singapore Hotel
Thursday evening.
An A$90,000 purchase out of the Inglis Melbourne Premier
Yearling Sale in 2011, Stepitup, the 2014 Singapore Derby
runner-up, rung up five black-type wins, including a defeat of
newly minted champion stayer Quechua (Arg) (Pure Prize) in the
Kranji Mile Oct. 4 (video)
followed by another
determined success in
the Raffles Cup (video)
three weeks later.
Trained by Laurie Laxon,
Stepitup has now won
15 of 34 career
appearances and has
banked better than
S$2.5 million. The
6-year-old was also recognized as champion older horse.
In other divisions, War Affair (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), the 2014
Horse of the Year, endured an interrupted campaign, but was
spectacular when given his chance and was named champion
4-year-old off wins in the 1400-meter Stewards’ Cup and the
Patron’s Bowl over the metric mile. The latter success also
secured War Affair champion miler honors. On the strength of a
tally in Garden City Trophy in September and a second
consecutive runner-up effort in the G1 KrisFlyer International
Sprint in May, Emperor Max (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})
was recognized as Singapore’s champion sprinter. Super One
(Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) made light work of all before him,
with four wins virtually untouched, and was honored as
champion 2-year-old.
