Southbank Centre announces UK premieres from Peaches and Planningtorock this summer alongside Jane Weaver, Mohsen Namjoo and Penguin Cafe plus June 2019 listings

● The exclusive UK premiere of There’s Only One Peach with the Hole in the Middle, a vision of the past, present and future of queer feminism written and performed by pioneering musician and legendary queer-feminist icon Peaches. Combining music, sound, fashion, and visual and live arts, this highly explosive, futuristic new staging celebrates her extraordinary career. The performance sees almost 40 musicians and performers take to the Royal Festival Hall stage dressed in costumes by internationally recognised avant garde hair and fashion designer Charlie Le Mindu (28 Aug, RFH)
● Outspoken singer-songwriter and producer Planningtorock (Jam Rostron) brings their atmospheric dance music and fearless synth-pop attitude to Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall this July for the UK premiere of new album Powerhouse. Planningtorock’s empowering music mixes dance with classical flourishes, unexpected brass and pitched-down vocals to explore love, queerness, gender identities, survival, and how music can be a powerful force of liberation. This performance of Powerhouse is an intimate and emotionally charged exploration of biographical anthems drawn from Planningtorock’s experiences as a non-binary genderqueer artist. (17 Jul, QEH) It coincides with the summer exhibition at Hayward Gallery: Kiss My Genders, celebrating more than 30 international artists whose work
explores and engages with gender identity. The exhibition’s title is taken from the song ‘Transome’ by Planningtorock (12 Jun - 8 Sep, Hayward Gallery)
● Southbank Centre presents a rare UK performance from revolutionary Iranian artist Mohsen Namjoo. Based in New York, in exile from his hometown Mashhad in eastern Iran, Namjoo reflects the divisions in Iranian society through his music. He brings his fusion of ancient and modern to Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, blending Persian classical music from the Khorasan Province with American rock and blues (28 Jun, QEH)
● One of Europe’s most inspiring independent female performers and one of the architects of current progressive pop music, Jane Weaver, brings her experimental new show Loops in the Secret Society to Southbank Centre as part of her first solo tour in over five years. Loops in the Secret Society is a sense-stimulating journey featuring solo variations of songs from Weaver’s critically acclaimed albums The Silver Globe and Modern Kosmology to create unique atmospheric audio/visual concerts (13 Jul, PUR)
● The ever-enigmatic Penguin Cafe come to Queen Elizabeth Hall with brand new material as part of their 2019 UK tour. Founded in 2009 by Arthur Jeffes as a follow-up to the late Simon Jeffes’ Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Penguin Cafe brings together a group of musicians from the likes of Suede, Gorillaz and Razorlight. They offer performances of re-worked modern hits, modernised classics and an immersive trip through a musical dream-state. (2 Oct, QEH)

THE MYSTERY OF THE BULGARIAN VOICES & LISA GERRARD Friday 7 June 2019, 7.30pm, Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, £27.50 Internationally acclaimed and Grammy award-winning all-female Bulgarian vocal ensemble The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices join forces with Golden Globe award-winning Australian singer Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and World-champion Bulgarian beatboxer SkilleR (Alexander Deyanov) to perform their captivating musical collaboration live in the UK for the very first time. Layering reflective vocals over dynamic nylon-stringed guitar, Cunningham has an individual approach to performing and recording that he will showcase in this performance. Cunningham has just released new single ‘Permanent Way’. https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/133958-charlie-cunningham-2019 FREE GIGS FRIDAY LUNCH: TWO Friday 14 June 2019, 1pm, Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, Central Bar, Level 2, Free TWO are former Holloways frontman turned songwriter/producer Alfie Jackson and writer and performer Gemma Rogers.They received more than 20,000 plays in the first two weeks on their first collaboration for Rogers’ solo single ‘Stop’ released in June 2018. Their sound is a mix of dark folk with lyrics from the shadows.
