These low-cost baskets also eliminate the wide variations in plating thickness that are common on barrel lines. These baskets eliminate anode bar cleaning and problems associated with poor electrical contact. As salt and corrosion build upon copper anode bars, regular anode baskets lose electrical contact, and the plating current drops. To compensate for the current loss, the barrel load must be reduced or the plating time increased. Direct-connected anode baskets com- pletely eliminate these problems by using a sealed power cable to deliver current from out- side the plating tank to the anode basket.
