The Tavola Arcaica is a conceptual project that relies on our ability to build a strong emotional bond between people and food with everyday objects, that goes beyond their use.

The use of the first tools made from stone was the first technological discovery of our species.However, we have assimilated their use in a way that we no longer give them the impor-tance they deserve.These elements were the origins of ergonom-ics and have been the first contact between man and artefact, allowing the man to carry out everyday activities such as cutting, chopping, picking and beating.The various stone tools ex axes, knives, con-tainers, etc. designed by our ancestors can be considerate the first product design in history.

A sophisticated evolution of good habits took us to the use of these tools under current forms such as blade type, fork and spoon, but our needs have not changed since then, they just follow a protocol that society has imposed on us. These preformed concepts caused us the missing of the primary bond that we cre-ated between us and food, building a small bar-rier of communication.

What would happen if we would use the tools of the age of the rock?

The tablewear is a reinterpretation of prehistor-ic tools that have been adapted to suit modern man. It is Ergonomically designed to be used in the same way that our ancestors grasped their tools, thus creating a primordial connection be-tween person and dish.

Are we sure we are storing our food properly? How many times have we thrown rotting vegetables away? Nowadays we are obsessed with stor-ing everything in the fridge, but what few people know is that this is not always the best way to keep food fresh. Fruit and vegetables require a set of conditions which, according to their proportion, help to keep these products fresher for longer.

OLTU is like an organism that takes advantage of the heat produced from the back of a fridge, which in today’s fridges is wasted energy, and uses it to help to cool the “totem” of vegetables via cooling by evaporation. The heat rises and affects the double wall of the clay containers, which, with the help of the water contained between their walls, is able to lower the temperature thanks to the heat extracted from their interior, recreating the ideal atmosphere for the needs of each group of vegetables. This is also a sustainable product because, as part of its functioning does not depend on energy, costs are minimal and, most importantly, each item is kept fresher. It is an industrial product with a strong educational component for the user: each person can now know about the needs of vegetables and preserve them in a more responsible and natural way.

Cork powder is a waste material from the filings of cork in the pro-duction of bottle tops. This material enters in the industrial production process, as fuel for the machines that work with the cork. In this cycli-cal process, a percentage of the powder could become a new mate-rial, taking advantage of something that, in its natural state, would be almost useless.

Thus we get a new application for the cork and an innovative opportu-nity for business. Mixed with appropriate glues, the powder becomes an extremely useful and versatile material for developing new and dif-ferent products which resamble leather in appearence and is water and high temperature resistant and therefore, has huge potencial for adaptation to a variety of existing products.

The new fabric, made from cork powder, demonstrets its usefulness, especially in the field of clothing, due to its flexibility, high tempera-ture resistance and its softness to the touch. It is non toxic, because the glues added, are used in the production of bottle tops, that are in contact with wine. It can be combined with cotton to create sew-ing products, accessories and coatings, plus the possibility of adding dyes. The pleasant texture and warm, earthy colours of cork powder, make this material an actractive fabric, for everyday use.

Do you remember what kind of toy you used to play with, when you were a kid?

Certainly, among the most appreciated, we have to highlight all these self-assembly games that gave us absolute freedom to invent and tell original stories.

Shoal enables us to train abstraction and creativity’s capabilities which are typical of the constructions toys, it consists of a number of pieces in the shape of a fish backbone. The pieces lead to many construction possibilities due to the spaces in the spine of each fish, allowing the mind of the children to develop abilities in problem solving and creativity. It’s a known fact, that the things introduced during their childhood, mold their self-concept and develop the growth of their personality.

Shoal helps to improve social skills, teaches how to work as a team, and builds self-esteem while the child (or the adult) is having fun. Fish are easy enough to join together and sepa-rate, thus younger children can begin to experiment building, taking apart and reassembling, exploring new possibilities and imagining projects.The construction can become a heterogeneous system depending on the user being a child or an adult, each assemblage could be an indicator of other abstract skills in fields such as mathematics and art, revealing important bases that can become very useful for the voca-tional choices.

The traditional skewer has reinvented itself offering new opportunities of use. Foresta is for those that enjoy eating, who want to combine food, fun and relaxation. The skewer has been reborn into a small tree like implement. The base of this fun object can be used as a tray or upside down as a container. Foresta has been developed during the internship in Ghigos Ideas Studio.

Globby is a portable sphere that when necessary can be used like a seat; it’s compact inside and it’s handle makes it easy to carry. Globby is customisable with different covers and in the interior of the sphere there are compartments to store food or just stash your stuff. It is as much fun as a ball but much more useful.
