Wilmington Montessori School is pleased to announced that we have once again been awarded accreditation by the Middle States Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSCESS). This marks a very important step for WMS, as we continue to offer a high-quality, child-centered Montessori edu-cation to our students. MSCESS accreditation signifies that the educational community of Wilmington Montessori School engaged in a rigorous process of developing self-knowledge, hosted an evaluation team of independently appointed educators and created an on-going strategic plan to move the school forward for years to come. This process involved all parts of the WMS

community, including staff, parents and students. Accreditation also signifies that WMS has met the Middle States Standards for a quality school. These standards reflect current research and best practices for throughout the education profession. During the term of accreditation, the school will engage in a Commission-directed series of reports and site visits to maintain the vigor of the accreditation process. Accreditation by MSCESS is recognized around the world as an indication of trustworthiness, educational quality and a commitment to on-going growth and improvement. Dr. Henry G. Cram Jr., president of MSCESS, offered his congratulations to the entire WMS community:

“Middle States accreditation is a recognition of both prior achievements and a commitment to great future accomplishments.”

Join the 9-12s on the Journey of Jazz—Next Thursday!

The long awaited, much anticipated, 9-12 Spring Concert will be presented next Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the WMS gym. The show will be broadcast LIVE from WMKR (Wilmington Montessori Kids Radio) and will take the audience on the journey of jazz. The DJ's, Bebopin' Ben and Grandmaster Ty, will invite the listening audience to call in with their response to the questions "Where did jazz go?” and “What did it become?" Concert attendees will want to fasten their seat-belts as they blast off to a variety of venues that include the Cotton Club, American Bandstand and finally, The Ed Sullivan Show. And folks... "You ain't heard nothin' yet"!

Still need co-op hours? Help with the WMS Class of 2011 Graduation Breakfast! Each year, the fifth-graders prepare and serve the food for the graduation breakfast honoring their sixth grade friends. They work under the supervision of their teachers and par-ent volunteers. Parents are needed to:

• Help with planning and organizing the menu, decora-tions and solicitation of food and baking supplies.

• Provide refreshments. • Supervise food preparation on June 2. • Work on decorating and set-up and/or serving and

clear-up on the day of the event (June 3). For additional information, contact Noel Dietrich at [email protected]. Sign up on the main co-op board across from the library.

WEDNESDAY WEEKLY SUBMISSIONS

With the change in weather comes the start of tick season. Our children spend time outdoors every day so please check them for ticks regularly at the end of the day. If you find a tick, it is important to know how to remove it. To get ready to remove the tick, you should have: • Fine tweezers • Gloves or a tissue so that you can avoid touching the tick • A small jar where you can put the tick (this will make identification easier if your child gets sick) • An antiseptic to clean the area of the tick bite and your hands after you remove it As demonstrated in the picture, you should use your tweezers to grab the

tick as close as possible to your child's skin. After using your tweezers to grab the tick as close as possible to your child's skin, you should gently pull it straight up. Be sure to avoid making any jerking or twisting movements as you pull it out, or you may cause the tick's head to break off. If you do notice that any part of the tick has remained embedded in your child's skin, be sure to call your pediatrician for help getting it out. Remember to use tweezers to remove a tick on your child. You should not try

to remove it with your fingers. Also, when removing a tick: • Avoid trying to burn the tick off with a match. • Do not smother the tick with nail polish, Vaseline or other products. • Mention the tick bite to your pediatrician if your child gets sick soon after getting bit by a tick, especially if he or she develops a rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue or swollen glands. • Do not leave the tick's head stuck in your child's skin or squeeze the tick as you try to remove it. Please contact Nurse Paige ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns!
