THE SEMIFINALSby Stephane Tardy

Mossop is one point ahead...

The semi-finals (20 boards) yesterday morning saw the winners of the qualifying rounds, Mahmood, play Mossop at table one and the Zimmermann team against Wigoder at table two.

At half-time Mahmood was leading easily by 34 to 6, whilst in the other match there was very little in it (5-7).

Several boards could have made a difference.

Board 3. Dealer South. Vul E/W [ K 7 ] 8 5 2 { 10 8 7 6 } Q J 7 4 [ A 2 [ Q 10 8 ] K 7 6 4 3 ] A Q 10 { A Q 5 4 3 { — } 8 } A K 9 6 5 3 2 [ J 9 6 5 4 3 ] J 9 { K J 9 2 } 10

Piotr Zatorski, in the open room, and Tor Helness, in the closed room, make the same bid on partner’s 5]: 5[, which shows ace of the suit. Klukowski and Helgemo both go for a Grand Slam. The amicable distribution of hearts and clubs endorsed their decision…

Hellness said at half-time: “It’s a poor result, but it was very difficult not to find the slam!”

However, in the other match both pairs stopped at game.

Board 7 also widened the gap.

Board 7. Dealer South. All Vul [ K 10 8 7 5 ] Q 10 { K 7 3 } J 6 3 [ Q J 6 [ A 9 4 3 2 ] 7 3 2 ] J { A 9 8 6 4 { Q J } Q 8 } K 10 7 4 2 [ — ] A K 9 8 6 5 4 { 10 5 2 } A 9 5

In the open room Franck Multon thought he would score on the deal. He stopped at 2], after making a somewhat pessimistic bid.

After the lead of }Q, he made nine tricks. Noting that 3NT would go down three on a clubs

lead, he hoped to win six imps. Not at all! In fact he lost four, which could have been 12.

On a 4] opener, Helness made a take-out double which sent his partner to 5{, fortunately not doubled.

In the other match, Zia Mahmood, on a trump lead and a not very inspired defence, managed to make 4] whilst his opponent made only 140.

We thought, at half-time, that only the first semi-final would provide some suspense. But no, because Wigoder took more points from Zimmermann and went through to the final.

At table 1, the Hackett brothers haven’t thrown in the towel. Against John Hurd et Vincent Demuy, they take some good decisions , as on board 13.

In 3NT, on the [3 lead, his opponent played the king and the led the jack, covered by the queen. After long reflection, South ducked. Nine tricks and 11 imps. (40-33).

Another six imps on Board 16 when, in the open room NS stop at 3] whilst Paul Hackett et David Mossop go for game. (40-39).

In 4}, John Hurd won, after having ceded two spades and one heart, and a winning finesse against king of trumps.

Paul Hackett went down one (45-39).

Another point for Mahmood on Board 19 (46-39), but Board 20 is still to play.

Board 20. Dealer West. All Vul [ K Q 10 4 2 ] 8 { A K 10 5 4 } A 8 [ A 9 8 7 6 [ 5 3 ] J 9 7 6 ] A K { 9 8 { Q J 6 } 9 4 } Q J 7 6 3 2 [ J ] Q 10 5 4 3 2 { 7 3 2 } K 10 5

In the closed room, Hackett and Mossop stop at 2{+2 whilst Hurd and Demuy play 2].

Justin led in the }9, taken with the ace, and spades towards the jack. Justin won, led back a club for the king, clubs trumped (Justin threw a diamond) [K throwing a diamond) [Q). Jason trumped with the king and played }Q, trumped with the ten and over-trumped by the jack) trumped with the ace and clubs again. The defence makes five trumps and the [A. Down one and six imps (46-45).

On the screen, Mossop team was declared the winner... but one score had been entered in the wrong column! The final in the afternoon was therefore Mahmood against Wigoder.

Team Wigoder - Charles Wigoder, Michal Klukowski, Piotr Zatorski, Jacek “Pepsi” Pszczola

A Wonderful Auction !

Once the teams tournament had finished, the players were invited to a cocktail party in the Hotêl Méridien.

The reception was also an agreeable setting in which to hold the auction for the pairs who will be starting their com-petition this morning.

Jean-Charles Allavena congratulated the winners of the teams event, Team Mahmood, before explaining how the bidding was to take place.

“We will not be putting all the pairs in the auction this evening. We have chosen those who are the most likely to put up a good fight during the competition.”

And the fight was already on at the auction! Animated in turn by Christina Lund Madsen and Zia Mahmood, it created many a set to! By whom? Pierre Zimmermann, Gus Hansen, Alfredo Versace and Romain Zaleski were the most lively bidders.

Helgemo-Helness was the pair who attracted the most bids – finally Pierre Zimmermann won the day over Alfredo Versace at 26.000 euros.

The Rimstedt juniors saw Gus Hansen go up to 16.000 euros.

You can find the details of the prices for each pair on this page.

Who got a good deal? We'll find out on Sunday evening.
