The infamous Westboro Baptist church is at it again, the

group recently protested outside of Hilliard Darby High

School May 10. The teachers of a US Political Thought and

Radicalism class at Worthington Kilbourne had asked a

church representative if one of them would come to Ohio

and speak to their students. According to the Columbus

Dispatch, typically when the church is invited some-

where, it will picket the surrounding areas instead to

avoid running into a lot of anti-protesters.

In order to avoid meeting a large group of anti-protesters

they even scheduled the event to be held at 7:10-7:40a.m.,

which is before Hilliard‘s school day begins. Alex

McCluskey, junior at Darby, states, ―When the principal

announced that the group was coming to protest at our

school a lot of kids didn‘t care. But when we all started to

research the church and the hateful messages they pro-

mote it got us all fired up!‖

Many students were confused as to why the group chose

Hilliard Darby. Chelsey Wolfe, junior, is one of those stu-

dents, ―I think the kids at Darby are very similar to the

kids at other high schools, my question is why there?‘‘

According to the WBBC, they chose Darby because the

school is a ―pervert run.‖ The church commonly uses this

slur to bash the LBGT community.

Hilliard Davidson and Bradley students were warned not

to go to the anti-protest because that would only encour-

age the WBBC to stay longer. Josh Brady finds the

group‘s message hypocritical as he goes on to say , ―If

they were true Christians they wouldn‘t be the ones judg-

ing, they‘re not very Christian-like people.‖

The initial goal behind having the WBBC come to Ohio

was to try and understand a different perspective,

hence the name of the Kilbourne class-US Political

Thought & Radicalism. Mr. Smith, government teacher,

said, ‗‘ I do not know what the teacher had in mind

when he invited the group. But if a teacher has the op-

portunity and resources to help student understand a

class concept, they ought to do that.‘‘ The class has also

invited many other types of groups from all over the

political spectrum, including those of the Ku Klux Klan

and peace organizations. Smith said it best when quot-

ing Aristotle, ―It is the mark of an educated mind to

entertain a thought without accepting it.‖

Sick of Ohio? Want to explore another culture? During

the 2012 school year spring break, students will have the

opportunity to explore Italy and Germany. Teachers Mr.

E. Smith, Mrs. Bingman, Ms. Hasser and Ms. Mesi de-

cided to put together this trip because it is ―Good for

art, literature, history, foreign languages and exploring

cultures,‖ says Bingman. She goes on to say, ―Since Lat-

in students do not have an exchange, this would be

great for them.‖ The trip is March 30, 2012 through

April 7, 2012 (9 days, but there may only be 7 days of

sightseeing due to the flights to and from). They are

leaving the day before spring break and returning East-

e r S u n d a y .

If you were unable to make the meeting, please see Mrs.

Bingman. You will be able to go unless all the seats are

full. The ―Intention is to [go on a trip like this] every

other year,‖ says Bingman, ―This is not made to conflict

with the Spanish and French Foreign exchanges.‖ She

goes on to say that ―Each trip has different experiences

and some different goals.‖ In order to travel a passport

is needed. It would be better to ―Get one at least four

months ahead,‖ says Bingman. There is also a form for a

parent to fill out for the school.

Some students are getting excited for the trip already.

Gage Nenzoski, junior, says, ―It seems like a fun trip

and educational experience.‖ Nenzoski adds, ―Its more

hands on. Instead of looking at pictures, I finally get to

go to these places for real.‖ One of the places that

Nenzoski is eager to see is the Vatican. He says it

―Seems pretty sweet. I have always wanted to go there.

It is a really ceremonial place with a lot of meaning.‖

Nenzoski also wants to see the concentration camps in

Germany because they ―Represent a lot.‖

The travelers will see cities such as Rome, Florence,

Munich and Tyrol. Italian exchange student, Lavinia

Simonelli, says, ―Rome is wonderful. Besides being a

city with an old history, it is also full of life. It is roman-

tic and magic. Well, yes, I am from Rome. So, of course

I‘m saying that it is great. But you will believe me once

you get there!‖ Simonelli has seen places like the Trevi

Fountain and the Coliseum. She says, ―The Trevi Foun-

tain is cool and I advise all to throw a coin in it and make a

wish. It really works.‖ In addition, the Coliseum is ―Very

big and is nice at night with all the lights in it. It is possible

that outside it you may see some people dressed like gladi-

ators!‖ Don‘t forget about the Italian food. Simonelli says,

―Pasta is the main plate . . . but you can never get bored of

it. And of course the pizza is really good too.‖

Germany is ―Full of history‖, says freshman Jessie

Kmietsch. Kmietsch comes from German descent and lived

in Berlin for a while. She travels there every year.

Kmietsch says, ―The fashion is great and there‘s always

something new to see because something is always being

built.‖ She goes on to say, ―A few people have cars, but no

one really drives. There are beautiful forests and in Mu-

nich there are mountains. Oh, and the chocolate is to die

for!‖ Travelers will get the chance to see the Olympic sta-

dium, Residenz, Dacheau Concentration Camp and the

N e u s c h w a n s t e i n C a s t l e .

The cost is approximately $2,600 and is put on by EF

Tours. Bingman says the trip is ―A lot of money, but a

good deal.‖ Also, if you are going on the trip and you

hosted an EF exchange student this year or will for the

2011-2012 school year, you will receive $500 off of the cost.

Ask Mrs. Bingman for more information about how to host

an exchange student. EF Tours is also offering one semes-

ter credit for this trip. Just fill out a journal and other pa-

perwork they require. Details are on the EF website. Stu-

Some of you may know her as senior,

Kyrstin House but one day you may know

her as the Pogo sticking champion of the

world. House has been Pogo sticking for

years. She began her Pogo sticking career

when she asked for a Pogo stick for Christ-

mas and got one. House says, ―It was hard

at first but I became a pro.‖ Some day

House hopes to set her own Guinness

World Record for longest time Pogo stick-

ing. There is currently no record for this.

The only record for Pogo sticking is the

longest distance which is 23.11 miles.

House‘s current record is 45 minutes. Not

only is Pogo sticking fun but it can be

good exercise. ―It‘s great exercise for your

legs and builds stamina,‖ says House.

Right now she‘s training to get back to

where she was. She runs and swims to

stay in shape. The Vibe wishes Kyrstin

House good luck with her dream.

―Ashrita Furman of Jamaica, New York, USA set a distance rec-

ord of 37.18 km (23.11 miles) in 12 hours 27 min on June 22, 1997

at Queensborough Community College Track, New York, USA,‖

according to www.ashrita.com.

―Fred Grzybowski [set] the Guinness World Record for height on

a Pogo stick by bouncing over seven feet, six inches on a flybar

1200 at Pogopalooza IV,‖ according to www.flybar.com

―George Hansburg patented his ―Pogo Stick‖ in 1919. The Gimble

Brothers Department Store in the U.S. imported a boatload of

them, but unfortunately, the sticks rotted on the wet ship ride

over. The folks at Gimble asked Hansburg to produce something

more resilient, and Hansburg eventually did just that—from his

own factory called SBI Enterprises. And those sticks, called

Okay let me lay it out for you, Facebook is here to stay and, Tumblr can make like a tree and leave. With

Facebook you can talk, post and have conversation with people but with Tumblr all you do is you post pic-

tures or and quotes and people can steal that picture you just post right under your nose. Facebook is the

bees‘ knee. I feel comfortable with Facebook, and I know everything I‘m doing. With Tumblr I don‘t even

know how to change my profile picture let along post anything. Facebook, everything is laid out for you. I

do have to say people have some interesting Tumblr blogs though. You can express yourself in more vari-

ous ways on Tumblr because you can put more pictures and quotes, and you‘re not censored like on Face-

book. On Facebook though you can put how you are feeling that day. The bad thing about Tumblr is you

really don‘t know who is following. People follow you with a screen, that

doesn't have to be their real name. With Facebook you can look people up and

see if you have any friends in common and there is a better chance that their

screen mane is their real name.

Let‘s just say Tumblr is just a phase like Myspace and Twitter, and Facebook is

life.

―It‘s the future of social networking,‖ says John Mayer according to Techcrunch.com. Tumblr has stolen

my heart. And before you know it it may steal yours too. Tumblr is about a lot more than blogging. It‘s

based on the things people like to share with each other (text, photos, links, etc.). Tumblr allows people to

express themselves without worrying about being judged by your peers. I have 135 followers on Tumblr

and I only know two of them. This is common for most Tumblers. You have followers based on common

interests not whether or not you know them. Because of this there is a lot less drama on Tumblr. Also,

Tumblr is much safer than Facebook. Many people put personal information

on Facebook (address, school, work, phone number, etc.). Tumblr has none of

that. Some people don‘t even put their name on their blog. Tumblr also allows

you to follow another person‘s blog without them following you back. Say

goodbye to friend requests. Tumblr also allows you to copy others. In fact,

copying is encouraged. Whereas on Facebook if you copy a picture or status it

could get you into some trouble and sometimes even kicked off the site. I‘m

not saying Facebook is dead, I‘m simply saying tumblr is better.

In high school, almost everyone knows that upperclassmen are

notorious for being rude to freshmen or to underclassmen in gen-

eral. It‘s a stereotypical high school, that‘s the way we‘d think it

would be, but what about at our school?

Freshman Sabrina Lane and Sophomore Chelsea Matejko, both

underclassmen agree that ―any persons attitude can clash with

yours and make you feel intolerant of other people‘s behaviors,

so you become annoyed by this.‖ This counts for everyone, but

other people seem to think it could be more of just the freshmen.

Donnie Justus, junior, says ―I think that the maturity level of

some of the underclassmen is annoying to a lot of upperclass-

men, but by your sophomore year you should know how to act

and be in the high school from being here, I guess the freshman

have an excuse, but after 7 months, you‘d think the freshman

would know how to act in and out of the classroom.‖

Despite the fact that freshmen get on your nerves, should you

really be hating on them or shoving them around when they

have just a right to the hallways as you do? Grace Selover, soph-

omore, says ―I think it‘s pretty hypocritical that sophomores treat

freshman badly because they were just in that position a year

ago.‖ Selover goes on to say, ―Some people are just very ignorant

to begin with and will be rude to anyone who gets in their way.‖

Jake Jones, freshman, agrees, yet has an opinion of his own ―It‘s

no different from when you‘re younger with older kids com-

pared to older with younger kids, in my personal opinion. It

seems that certain people tend to be mean because you‘re young-

er than them or smaller so they can feel seniority over you if

t h e y ‘ r e i n a h i g h e r g r a d e . ‖

Not only is hearing people talk way too loud obnoxious, it‘s also

aggravating and commonly done by freshman. Selover, Matejko,

Jones, Lane, and Justus all agree that these behaviors are annoy-

ing and unwanted. Jones says, ―I just don‘t understand why little

girls think screaming in the hallway is okay.‖ Selover says,

―When the freshmen think they own the place it bugs me and the

judgmental ones, but then again that goes for every class.‖

Matejko says, ―You can‘t just walk into a new school where peo-

ple have been for years and act like you‘re the ‗shiz‘ if I may. You

have to earn your spot.‖ Lane agrees.

To conclude, people are always going to get on your nerves. ―I

think that they‘re just like us, just new to the environment. When

you talk down on them or shove them around, it doesn‘t make

them feel any better about being in a huge new school.‖ says So-

B a s e -

ball

The Monarch baseball team‘s season came to an end earlier

this month on May 11 after a 7-4 loss to Reynoldsburg. The

team finished the season 15-10 (7-6) to finish third in the OCC.

Coach John Carder was very pleased about this season stating

―We haven‘t finished third in the OCC in a while. The rain

was very disappointing, however we did a very nice job this

season.‖ Three names that came to the mind of Coach Carder

when asked about the team‘s Most Valuable Players were

seniors Matt Brown and Kyle Nelson and junior Jake Tharp.

Nelson was first team All-OCC and received honorable men-

tion for All-District, while Tharp received second team All-

OCC.Two players

moving on and

playing in college

are Nelson who is

attending Mount

Union and Jay

Sperry attending

Softball

Also coming to a end this month was the Lady Monarch soft-

ball team after losing to Tri Valley 13-1 on May 12. The Lady

Monarchs finished the season at the top of the OCC with a

record of 16-8 (12-3).

Coach Jennifer Segner was ―pleasantly surprised‖ on the sea-

son. ―We were supposed to be a middle of the road team and

finished on top of the OCC.‖ Rachael Mullaney was also very

happy with the way the season ended and winning OCC.

―This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for us but we

turned out to do very well and ended up winning the OCC‖

Mullaney said.

Coach Segner stated ―the team didn‘t have one MVP because

we were young and inexperience and we had multiple play-

ers step up this season.‖ Coach Segner also has high expecta-

tions for next year as well. ―We are one year older, and we

need to build off what we did this year and improve.‖

Students, teachers, parents, and counselors have all most

likely witnessed depression. It could be a friend or a

family member. It‘s only normal that we would want to

help them before the situation becomes unbearable for

them or for those around them, but most don‘t know

what steps to take.

Depression affects not only that one person, but their

friends, family members, boyfriend or girlfriends, and

more. Their grades, for example, tend to plummet. They

lose interest in things that they once liked to do, they

change friends, and they express no apathy. In other

words, they‘re unable to express anything. They will

hardly make eye contact when they talk, they will seem

more quick-tempered, and they will sometimes roam

from group to group to find people they can relate to or

who will accept them.

Our counselors here at school are here to help those stu-

dents. Depending on the situation, venting will usually

help. Mrs. Proehl, guidance counselor, said, ―Counseling

is to improve depression; it‘s a process. Take the time,

and you need to be willing to work at it to improve.‖

They could also find outlets for depression; hobbies

they‘re interested in or take things off their mind. Exer-

cise is also great for them because when a person accom-

plishes something, it makes them feel good. Proehl stat-

ed, ―The number one thing a person could do to lift their

spirit is to make an effort to define what is good in their

life and hold onto it.‖ Sable Graham, senior, agreed.

―People are minimalists. We make a big deal out of the

little things that upset us.‖

At the end of the day, people most likely will only think

about the negative things that happened in that day. ―If

we would take more time to think about the positive

things that happened to us, or the things that we did,

majority of us would feel better,‖ Proehl exclaimed. ―It‘s

how you think about things that help you; change the

way you think to improve.‖ Jessica Alley, sophomore,

agreed, ―It‘s their job to help themselves.‖

However, that doesn‘t mean that they don‘t need or look

for a friend‘s help. Sometimes a depressed person is

reaching out for someones attention in an attempt to

know that they‘re important too.

Sometimes depression will be temporary, caused by

things like death in the family or of a close friend. For

this, mourning is a good way to help it pass. Sometimes

depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the

brain. For this type of depression, sometimes medica-

tion

is required to help that person along. Proehl explained,

―It is a science, but also a trial and error. Some medica-

tions will work for one person, but not another. We‘re

all affected differently. The medication could also

change as we get older.‖ Depending on the situation,

sometimes it‘s better to tell an adult that you know you

can trust about your friend. Other times, just let them

know that you‘re there for them. The little things will

help to improve their mood just as much as venting

could.

A charismatic and dedicated performer, Chris Murray is deserving of the

title of this month‘s Leader in the Arts. A hard working and talented

student, Murray was a feature of this year‘s musical Beauty and The

Beast playing the smooth ladies man, Lumiere. Murray is sure to rise to

fame and I was able to track him down so we can all say we knew him

when.

What activities are you involved in (school and extra-curricular)?

Choir, show choir, musicals, tennis

What got you interested in performing? What is it that appealed to you?

I did my first play at six and I just stuck with it.

How do you usually prepare for a performance?

I drink a lot of tea; it‘s good for your throat.

Do you play any instruments? If so, what? Why those/that instrument?

Piano, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, bass, drums, because I wanted to.

[laughs] There is no real reason.

How do you handle the pressure of performing? Does it make you nervous?

What do you do you do to deal with it?

I‘ve done it for so long I don‘t get nervous, which carries over into other

things. I don‘t hesitate, and I go for it

What is the best part you’ve ever performed? Why?

Probably Beauty and the Beast, because it was fun to prepare and fun to

learn a French accent, it was new.

Who is your favorite artist or your favorite type of music? Who inspires you?

I like everything but country. If I had to pick its between Coldplay or Owl

City…or Eminem…or Nicki Minaj [laughs]

Do you plan on continuing to perform? Professionally? Why? Why not?

Yeah, the point of joining the Coast Guard is to support me while I work on

writing my movies, I want to direct and act in them.

What kind of movies are you writing?

One‘s action sci-fi and the other is realistic fiction about a kid who gets para-

lyzed.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t performing?

Biking and working out. Eating. Cooking. Playing video games.

Who has inspired you to work hard and achieve your goals?

James Cameron and my dad, he‘s pushed me to work towards what I want

and to follow my dreams.

If you could spend the day with anyone, past or present, dead or alive, who would it

be? Why?

Will Ferrell. It would be a really fun, I feel like every where he‘d go, he‘d

make it funny.

What is something not many people know about you?

I collect art. If I like a piece I get it. I have 15-20 pieces.

Lindy Howard, valedictorian,

athlete and leader in our

school, spends her days hitting

the books hard. With a 4.16

GPA and five AP classes

throughout her high school

career including government,

history, English, Spanish and

calculus, Howard still finds

time to be involved in sports.

What are your hobbies?

Shopping, running, playing

sports and hanging out.

What is your favorite music?

Country, especially Rascal

Flatts and Taylor Swift.

What is something weird nobody

real knows about you?

I don‘t really have anything

weird about me, except maybe that I have a twin brother, and I am older by

a minute.

What have you been involved in at MHS?

Cross Country, Basketball, Softball and Calculator Club.

Would you change anything over your high school years?

Probably taking more fun classes. [I wish I would have taken] more elec-

tives.

What has been your favorite class in school?

Probably Calculus because Mr. Holton makes it fun, and while it is a diffi-

cult class I always looked forward to going to it, because he makes it enjoya-

ble!

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

Tondra because she helped me get through chemistry and I t.a. for her.

What are you going to miss about MHS?

Just being able to hang out with my friends and all the teachers.

Where do you plan on going to school and what are you planning on majoring in?

I am going to Wooster and I don‘t know what I am majoring but I am mi-

noring in education [Note: Wooster doesn‘t offer a major in education, only

a minor].

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully as an elementary school teacher. Maybe married with a family.

What does a typical weekend look like to you?

Depends, I do AAU [travel basketball] so I might have a tournament or

practice. Usually lots of homework, but not now [because AP tests are over].

Are you planning on doing any sports in college? Yeah, I am playing basketball.

Who inspires you and why? My parents and my sister, because I am a lot like

my sister so I looked up to her and what she did. She has helped me with

anything I ever needed.

Tyler Akins is a man of many talents. He can drum—he‘s been on the drum-

line for four years now—and he can swim, as demonstrated by his four

years on the varsity swim team. He‘s also no slouch in the academic depart-

ment: Akins has a 3.8 GPA and is currently taking AP classes including

history, BC calculus and English. Through his high school years, Akins has

managed to balance it all.

How long have you been swimming?

Since fifth grade. I really enjoy it, minus all the practices. I‘m pretty good.

How good?

Well I qualified for districts twice in the 100 fly and in the relays. I was third

place in the relay at OCCs this year. Got a medal. I also got three third place

medals from the invitational meet, plus the Heart of a Lion award last year.

So that‘s kind of a big deal.

A good season, then. AreA you still swimming?

I‘m taking a break. I might start again in college. I usually do summer swim,

but I‘m going to focus on my work [at Farmhouse Ice Cream Parlor] this

summer.

Speaking of college, what are your future plans?

I‘m going to Miami University and majoring in architecture. Then I‘ll hope-

fully receive my master‘s and become an architect in the near future. I want

to design skyscrapers – to be able to point at a building and say ―Yeah, I

designed that.‖

So why did you start swimming?

Chris Murray did it in fifth grade, so I thought it‘d be fun to do it with him.

Then he quit the year that I joined. But I stuck with it. I like [swimming], it‘s

a really good workout. And I like the people! It‘s tough, but you become

close to the people that you‘re around all of the time.

How did you fit swimming into your schedule?

During the winter it took up all of my time. Three-hour practices every day,

even on [winter] break! I was exhausted all of the time. But it was worth it –

I felt like I achieved something with every second I dropped.

What’s your fastest time?

A 1:00:23 in my 100 fly last year

Any favorite memories?

Probably sophomore year when I

dropped five seconds in my 100 fly

and won the race. It felt amazing.

What’s a typical race like for you?

It‘s not that intimidating for me. I

kind of psych myself up and ignore

the other racers. I act like I‘m the only

one swimming. It helps that I can‘t

see anything without my glasses!

Any pre-race rituals?

I do an interpretive dance. No music.

May 2010 14 Monarch Vibe Monarch Vibe

Page 16: Monarch Vibe May 2011

What are your fu- ture plans?

I‘m going to college at the University of Iowa.

I‘m going to get my bachelors in English, pos-

sibly a double in psychology and then I‘ll go

onto graduate school. I really don‘t know

what I‘ll be doing with myself just yet. I‘m

going to see how the next few year play out

before I make any major plans but most likely

a job writing or editing for a publication or

something along those lines.

What’s one thing you would change in the world?

Less ignorance and apathy, less bickering and

killing, more peace, love and happiness, you

know the usual.

What will you miss about high school?

Not much! Maybe the simplicity of it all. You

know, of being a teenager with very few ma-

jor responsibilities and I‘ll definitely miss my

friends. It‘ll take some getting used to.

What’s a secret talent that you have no one knows

about?

Uhhh I don‘t know!! I‘m not sure I have any

secret talents.

Then is there anything that no one knows about

you?

There‘s nothing about me that NO one

knows. I share information with people. And

if I had a talent then I definitely wouldn‘t

keep it a secret, you know what I mean?

What job would you want to have during college?

Maybe an internship or one of those library

jobs where you get paid to just sit at a desk

[laughs]

Where do you see/ wish to see yourself in the next

10 years?

In a big city, far away from here. Hopefully

not living in a cardboard box, and probably

married.

What did you want to be when you were older?

Why?

A vet but then I found out that I‘m allergic to

cats and then I don‘t like needles or blood

so I could never do anything like that.

May has the privilege of hosting one of Vibe seniors, Erin Walters.

With four years of hard work on the Vibe staff her spot here is well

deserved. Walter‘s has been a vital part of the paper, this year serv-

ing as the copy editor proof-reading all our stories to layout or be-

ing the business manager. Her personality and familiar face to the

Vibe will surely be missed next

year.

So where do you plan on doing after

high school?

I plan on attending Notre Dame

University in the fall

Oh, that’s interesting. What do you

plan on majoring in?

Currently I am undecided

What is you high school GPA?

4.13

What are your future plans?

I plan on going to OSU Marion to major in history. Then hopeful-

ly transfer to DC, New York or overseas, to work at a history

museum while I‘m getting my PhD.

What is your favorite mythical creature?

I have quite a few. It‘s between Loch Ness Monster, dragon, and I

truly believe in aliens.[looks out window to the sky] I think there

is more to life than really meets the eye, and we shouldn‘t close

off our minds because it‘s farfetched.

What is your favorite memory of High School?

Toss-up between hosting Lip Sync which was super fun, and the

dance parties in the Vibe[As Emily Mueting is dancing in the

background] I really like when we all just randomly break in to

dance and when Pat sings, we pretty much live in a musical.

What are you going to miss and why?

I‘m going to miss seeing all my friends on a daily basis and I‘m

going to miss working on the Vibe and hanging out with the Vibe

staff. I going to miss all the cool teachers like Earl, McConoughey

and Boylan the most and I‘m going to miss the idea of being in

high school. Now I‘m an adult and I really enjoyed high school!

What made you look into the Vibe?

I really enjoy writing and I always have an opinion on something

so I thought it would be a great experience. I was always really

shy so I thought it might help me to come out of my shell and it

has. Also my sister was in journalism in Dublin and she really

enjoyed it so I wanted to try it out. I‘m really happy I did too.

What do you wish you could have done differently?

I think I would have gotten more involved sooner. I would have

What has been your best high school memory?

The French Exchange for sure, it was such a wonderful

experience and I learned a lot. Also, being a part of the golf

team.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life?

So many people have had an impact; everyone has

shaped me to become the person that I am today.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If I could live anywhere in the world I would want to live

on Long Island or Brooklyn in New York.

What activities have you been involved in?

The Monarch Vibe of course, golf, student council and I

work for Salon 122.

Favorite quote to live by?

Be awesome.

That’s very clever Erin. So, where do you see yourself in ten

joined a club or maybe done something in

drama like a play. I also would have

changed my mind about taking AP Gov-

ernment [laughs]. Not my best class.

If you could go back what classes would you

take? Why?

I would take public speaking. I‘m not the

best speaker and that would have helped. I

probably would have taken more comput-

er classes and maybe AP American Histo-

ry. I also would have taken journalism

freshman year. I would definitely have

enjoyed another year.

Who is your biggest role model?

My mother, she has taught me so much. I

like to joke that the reason I‘m so stubborn is because I take after her but I am

very happy I‘m so much like her. She is the most important person in my life.

Oh and we can‘t forget Betty White because who wouldn‘t love to be that

awesome at 89.

What is your favorite TV show and why?

CRIMINAL MINDS!! [laughs] I live for that show. It‘s all about crime solving

and it focuses on profiling. I just love the realistic aspect to it. The cast is

amazing and so believable.

What is the one thing you want to do before college?

I really want to travel through Europe. I would work my way south and visit

The ―what should be a sport‖ debate continues as band

recently became one of the activities that qualifies as a

sport you can use to not take gym, while show choir still

remains just an activity. When it comes to physical educa-

tion The Ohio Development of Education states a student

must complete a total of one-half unit of physical educa-

tion to graduate and the course must include a minimum

of 120 hours of course instruction to earn this one-half

credit. The department adapts policies in which students

can excuse high school physical education if the student,

during high school, has participated in interscholastic ath-

letics, marching band or cheerleading for at least two sea-

sons. The schools have no control over what activities be-

come a sport and when the outcome of the department‘s

decision cannot be altered at state level. Another rule that

the department has made is that show choir and any non-

school-sponsored athletics cannot count for the exemption

of physical education because there is no authority granted

to a board of education to include any additional sport.

Many students though are still confused about the situa-

Nick Chuvalas, junior band member in the drum line, says,

―In band we have to run laps as a warm-up we have to

carry heavy instruments for an hour and sometimes

more.‖ He also states, ―If band is a sport show choir

should be too.‖ Show choir members Brandon Austin, jun-

ior and three year singer dancer, had this to say, ―Show

choir is very competitive but also very subjective because

of the fact that you win trophies.‖ Austin also states,

―Since dancing is now considered a sport, show choir

should also because we sing and dance.‖ Gacusan says,

As the school year is coming close to an end and

the summer is quickly approaching, there are

plenty of things to do that students are going to

want to accomplish before the next school year

comes. Have you ever wanted to do something in

a certain amount time, but did not end up doing

it? A lot of students wish to do something im-

portant with their lives but never do because there

is not enough time or they don‘t want to do it by

themselves. Goals to accomplish could be going to

the beach, getting your license, or maybe getting a

certain girl/boy to notice you. Whatever it is it‘s

something you or a friend might want to get done.

What you need to do is every time you think of

something important write it down on a piece of

paper and after there‘s a good amount of goals

written down take the top ten goals you wish to

accomplish before the summer ends. After that

take one goal at a time and work on accomplish-

ing this. If it‘s going to the beach then start saving

money each pay check you receive; anoth-

er helpful tip is to save all the change you

receive, it all adds up. Or if it‘s getting

your license, you need to take the drivers

ed. classes so the first step would to get

yourself signed up. Even if it‘s the getting

the certain someone special to notice you,

start talking to them. You‘ll never reach

that goal if you only stare at them so

make the first move. No matter what you

want to accomplish this summer it all

starts somewhere. You‘ll have to move

off your butt this summer and start doing

what you want to accomplish! It is not

where people can post pictures of themselves

It‘s hard to walk down the halls of MHS and not

see pair of the latest trend in fashion: Toms Shoes,

founded by Blake Mycoskie in 2006, have been

catching more and more eyes recently with the

newer and friendlier weather. Ranging in different

styles, from the popular Classics to the more rug-

ged Botas, Toms aren‘t just the latest craze in foot-

wear. The whole focus of the Toms Shoes company

is their motto, ―One for One,‖ which simply means

when you buy a pair of Toms, another pair of

Toms is given to a child in need. ―I got my pair be-

cause they‘re for a really good cause, and they‘re

also really cute,‖ says Alexis Andrews, senior. ―I

got the Highlands Black Botas last Christmas, and

they‘re really comfortable.‖

When many people think of saving children, the

most common answer would be to supply medi-

cine, water, and food. Most don‘t think of making a

shoe company, but when Mycoskie visited Argen-

tina and befriended a group of children, he noticed

most of them didn‘t have shoes to protect their

feet. Inspired by this new discovery, he founded

Toms Shoes to aid third world countries with

shoes to prevent diseases.

Unfortunately, Toms Shoes, just like every prod-

uct, has its Achilles heel. Since the Toms shoes go

to children living in third world countries, which

usually have humid and dry environments, most

of the types of shoes don‘t handle well in wet cli-

mates. They can also become dirty easily, but don‘t

let this discourage you! There are ways to clean

Toms, it just depends on the type you have. And if

you get the Cordones or Botas, you‘ll have an easi-

er time keeping them clean because they‘re not

The boastful and arrogant god of thunder from the comics

successfully hit theatres May 6, and has reigned in over $66

million already. The story begins when Thor as played by

Chris Hemsworth, disobeys his father and re-kindles an an-

cient feud with the ice people. Soon after, the king of Asgard

portrayed by Anthony Hopkins casts Thor out of their space

realm to live on Earth with humans. Stripped of his most

powerful weapon, the magical hammer, Thor soon finds his

stay might be longer than he had initially hoped for. Things

get interesting when Thor‘s brother Loki turns out to be help-

ing the ice people and becomes temporary king. Thor then

gets brought back to Asgard by his friends to restore order

and must make a very big decision. In order to avoid spoiling

the ending that is all the summary I can give you. The acting

was above average, as the film is accompanied with other

well known names such as Natalie Portman, Rene Russo and

Kat Dennings. I was really impressed with how developed

the graphics were in the movie and definitely recommend

seeing it in 3D. The only flaw that I accounted for was the

introduction seemed to drag on forever. Once the prologue

was over though it seemed to be non-stop action, minus some

of the corny kiss moments shared between Hemsworth and

Portman. If you‘re not a superhero-movie type of person,

don‘t bother going to see it. However, if you love superhero

movies, Thor is a must see.

The movie Bridesmaids has been advertised as a movie for

both sexes, and it definitely pulled that off. Starring SNL cast

members Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph and including

many other respectable stars, the movie lived up to its expec-

tations. The story line begins fairly simply: a woman, Lillian,

becomes engaged and invites her best friend Annie to be the

maid of honor.

However, what ensues are jealous fights between Annie and

Lillian‘s rich new friend, some crass humor for the men, and a

surprise romance for the women. The movie pulls of its

―chick-flick that‘s not just for chicks‖ vibe by spicing up the

focus of life-long friendship and self-actualization with some

laugh out loud and, at times, crude scenes.

This movie is also not one whose most hilarious scenes are

spoiled by movie trailers. In reality, not even the story itself

was really given away by trailers. I went into the theater ex-

pecting one thing and experienced something completely dif-

ferent. The plot wasn‘t what I expected at all, but most defi-

nitely in a good way. It‘s also important to note that pretty

much all of the boyfriends present who were undoubtedly
