Good King Wenceslas looked outOn the Feast of StephenWhen the snow lay ‘round aboutDeep and crisp and evenBrightly shone the moon that nightThough the frost was cruelWhen a poor man came in sightGath’ring winter fuel

“Hither, page, and stand by me,If thou know’st it, tellingYonder peasant, who is he?Where and what his dwelling?”“Sire, he lives a good league hence,Underneath the mountainRight against the forest fenceBy Saint Agnes’ fountain.”

“Bring me flesh and bring me wineBring me pine-logs hitherThou and I shall see him dineWhen we bear them thither.”Page and monarch, forth they wentForth they went togetherThrough the rude wind’s wild lamentAnd the bitter weather.

“Sire, the night is darker nowAnd the wind blows strongerFails my heart, I know not howI can go no longer.”“Mark my footsteps, good my pageTread thou in them boldlyThou shall find the winter’s rageFreeze thy blood less coldly.”

In his master’s step he trodWhere the snow lay dintedHeat was in the very sodWhich the Saint had printedTherefore, Christian men, be sureWealth or rank possessingYe, who now will bless the poorShall yourselves find blessing.

Monash Carols by Candlelight 2016Carol Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay,The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the skyAnd stay by my cradle til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stayClose by me forever, and love me, I pray.Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

Monash Carols by Candlelight 2016Carol Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snowOn a one horse open sleighO’er the fields we go,Laughing all the wayBells on bob tail ring, making spirits brightWhat fun it is to laugh and singA sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the wayOh, what fun it is to rideIn a one horse open sleighJingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the wayOh, what fun it is to rideIn a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago,I thought I’d take a ride,And soon Miss Fanny BrightWas seated by my side; The horse was lean and lankMisfortune seemed his lotWe got into a drifted bank,And then we got upset.

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the wayOh, what fun it is to rideIn a one horse open sleighJingle bells, jingle bellsJingle all the wayOh, what fun it is to rideIn a one horse open sleigh

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say: “Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

Then all the reindeers loved him as they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, you’ll go down in history!

Monash Carols by Candlelight 2016Carol The First Noel

The first Noel the angels did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay:In fields where they lay keeping their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far:And to the earth it gave great lightAnd so it continued both day and night.

Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same starThree wise men came from the country far;To seek for a King was their intent,And to follow the star wherever it went.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the north-west;O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,And there it did both stop and stay,Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,Fell reverently upon their knee,And offered there in his presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the kind of Israel.

Monash Carols by Candlelight 2016Compere

Pete Smith OAM

The voice over king!

In the early years of television Pete was associated with the ABC’s Channel 2, where he was an announcer, variety host and compere of his own weekly Sports View Hit Parade each Saturday afternoon.

In 1964, Pete joined Channel 9, home of Graham Kennedy’s “In Melbourne Tonight”, for which he presented commercials, appeared in comedy sketches and, on several occasions, acted as compere.

Over the years at Channel 9, Pete has been seen as on-camera host for numerous specials; at one stage during the 1970s he was a National Nine newsreader.

On Channel 9, Pete was involved with Ernie Sigley and Denise Drysdale on their weekday morning program “Ernie and Denise”. His was the voice that boomed out for over 21 years (surely a record?) to welcome viewers to the popular quiz program “Sale of the Century”.

With over 40 years at GTV9, Pete is the longest serving on-air personality and is Chairman and Patron of the GTV Foundation. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

2016 marks the 15th year in a row that Monash Carols by Candlelight Concert has welcomed Pete as its compere.
