    Religious life on Aegina island

    Aegina island has a great religioustradition, both

    obvious and hidden, expressed in a special, continuous

    way from the ancient years until today. The way myths

    and saints have related to each other is admirable and

    the saints that Aegina has generated are many, as are

    the myths that could be told about this island .....

    Church and monastery of Agios NektariosOne of the most visited sites on Aegina is the church of

    Agios Nektarios and the monas tery of Agia Triada. Saint

    Nektarios of Aegina (1846-1920), is one of the mos t

    widely known Greek Orthodox Saints. Agios Nektarios

    was known as a great miracle worker.

    Monaste ry of ChrysoleonitissaOne of Aegina's bes t-kept secrets is this beautiful early

    17th-century monastery which sits off in the hills of

    central Aegina, inhabited by only nine nuns and quite a

    few animals . You can reach it by foot or car by heading

    along the road which starts opposite Agios Nektarios.

    Located on a steep hill adjacent to the church and

    monas tery of Agios Nektarios, it was the islands capital

    from the 9th century until the earl y 19th century AD). The

    setting itself is magnificent, especially in spring.

    Monastery of Agios MinasThis monas tery lies s outh-west of the Afea Temple, on a

    beautiful spot surrounded by pine trees. It is a wom en's

    monas tery since 1956. The monastery impresses the

    visitor with the nun's indus triousness , its organisation

    but also the spirituality which is obvious during the

    mass with the melodic voices of the nuns who chant

    and every other church gathering.

    Faneromeni churchAt a 15 minutes wa lk from the port of Aegina town, there

    is a s mall underground church dating from the 13th

    century. The icon of the Virgin in the second chapel, was

    found in the cave behind the alter. The undergroundchurch is locked and only open for visitors on certain

    times.
