Dear Friends,

I am proud to present the Mondavi Center 2014–15 season to you. Our intention is to bring

our region a diverse gathering of artists and thinkers from around the globe—and to treat you

to evenings of grand spectacle alongside small-scale events of charm and intimacy.

When you come to Jackson Hall for the U.S. premiere of Akram Khan’s iTMOi, you will be treated

to an evening adventure of dance, sound, costume and scenic effects, unmatched in our area since

we hosted Ballet Preljocaj’s Blanche Neige. When you join us in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre for

one of our “Visions” programs, you will be up close and personal with some of the most innovative

artists working today, artists whose work reflects the spirit of discovery that we find all around us

on the UC Davis campus. And throughout the season, you will find musicians immersed in our

global and American heritages, the leading artists of jazz, modern dance and classical music.

You will recognize many of the names in this brochure: the London Symphony Orchestra with

Michael Tilson Thomas, jazz masters Delfeayo and Ellis Marsalis, Jr., the Brazilian superstar Caetano

Veloso, and the classical music whirlwind Lang Lang. Others may be new to you, like The Gloaming

and Tanya Tagaq—but take one of our subscription series journeys, and like many Mondavi Center

regulars you may find your most rewarding experience with an artist new to you. I have tried

to put a number of such wonderful but lesser known artists on your radar by marking them with

the special “Director’s Choice” symbol.

As always, I encourage you to rejoice in the familiar, to discover something new and to join us

in the comfort and beauty of our Mondavi Center. I thank you in advance for taking this

journey in 2014–15.

Sincerely,

Don Roth, Ph.D.

Executive Director

San Francisco SymphonyChristian Zacharias, conductor and soloist One of the pleasures of a Mondavi Center season is the return of the San Francisco Symphony. This program is a stirring reminder of this premier orchestra’s range. Copland’s joyous Appalachian Spring, for which the composer won a Pulitzer Prize, is one of the most beloved pieces in the American repertoire. Foremost Mozart interpreter Christian Zacharias conducts the Piano Concerto No. 20 from the keyboard and Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 from the podium in this concert, which also includes the slender, lovely Morton Feldman elegy for his piano teacher, MadamePress Died Last Week at Ninety.

For more than a century, the Czech Philharmonic has represented the pinnacle of Czech cultural achievement. Conducted by Antonín Dvořák in its inaugural performance, the orchestra has had a series of acclaimed conductors and music directors over the years, but the partnership between Jiří Bělohlávek and the Czech Philharmonic is among the most celebrated in the orchestra’s history. The program features works from two Czech composers, Janáček and Dvořák, and will be capped off with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet displaying his technical and interpretive prowess in Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto.

Dutoit is a longtime champion of 20th Century composers like Bartok, Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy. Joining Dutoit for this program is Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky. The 40-year-old virtuoso, who has earned critical acclaim for performing Rachmaninoff ’s great Paganini Rhapsody under Dutoit’s baton in Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Chicago, will be tackling Rachmaninov in this performance. This international debut also marks a warm return for Michael Tilson Thomas as conductor and brilliant pianist Yuja Wang. Curtis Chamber Orchestra robert spano, conductorroberto Díaz, viola

The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. This unique professional training (and the full tuition scholarships provided to all of its students) has enabled Curtis alumni like Lang Lang, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and others to assume prominent positions in America’s leading orchestras as well as ensembles around the world. One of the fruits of the focus on performance is the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Already a fixture in Curtis’s home town, Philadelphia, the ensemble draws its members from the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, which has been praised for its “otherworldly ensemble and professional level of sophistication” (The New York Times). Conductor Robert Spano leads the ensemble in a program that includes masterpieces by Mozart and Prokofiev, a new viola concerto by Curtis alumnus and Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, performed by soloist (and Curtis president) Roberto Díaz; and a new vocal composition by Spano.

Academy of Ancient MusicRichard Egarr, music director The Academy of Ancient Music explores the original intentions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suites using the expressive power of period instruments—flutes made of wood, trumpets without valves, strings woven from animal gut. But for all its authenticity, the Academy is hardly old-fashioned; in fact, The Independent hails them as “the ultimate raspberry to anyone who thinks baroque music is predictable.” In this program, music director Richard Egarr takes the audience on a guided journey through these four masterpieces of melody, harmony and orchestration, rediscovering vital sounds that have not been heard for hundreds of years.

This show has legs. This American Life host Ira Glass has joined forces with choreographer/dancer Monica Bill Barnes & dancer Anna Bass to combine two art forms, radio storytelling and dance, that—as Glass puts it—“have no business being together.” It is an evening of storytelling that The Washington Post calls “equal parts heart and humor.” Glass delivers his trademark narratives, and dancers Barnes and Bass (whom The Washington Post calls “the Tina Fey of dance” ) evoke characters through movement. So, same great Ira Glass, this time with dance moves.

When all you have to defend yourself is a “bonsai guitar,” the Ukes’ preferred putdown for their chosen instrument, it helps to have a sense of humor. The Hot Sardines With a salty stride piano, blustery brass lineup, French-born singer and fast-tapping percussion, the band’s sound is French hot jazz meets New Orleans brass. The Sardines make the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Fats Waller used to make: straight-up, footstomping jazz with live performances that pack a powerful punch of fun. Sultry standards from the 20s, 30s and 40s come alive with a vibrancy that captivates and lingers long after the show is over.

More than 100 years ago, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky famously debuted The Rite of Spring before a Parisian audience, an event thatended in violent mayhem and scandal. In this remarkable piece of dance theater Akram Khan investigates this iconoclastic milestone that shattered the comforts of traditional “pretty” composition. iTMOi (In The Mind Of Igor) continues the Company custom of challenging conventional dance compositions and, in that sense, extends the exploration of evoking emotions through patterns rather than through expression “using Stravinsky as the key, the guide, the map.”

VisionsLara Downes, piano Zuill Bailey, celloSome Other Time Lara Downes and Zuill Bailey chose Leonard Bernstein’s Some Other Time as the title track of their first recording together because “it represents three central qualities that inspired this project: friendship, adventure and nostalgia.” Bernstein, Barber, Copland and Foss, who all wrote in the 1920s–40s, shared deep friendships during those action and adventure-packed decades. The music they composed created new possibilities for an American sound. Downes and Bailey, who first came together as musical partners over Barber’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in 2009, bring the luster of the past and nostalgic longing of the presentto these timeless American classics arranged for cello and piano.

The Navy SEALs’ raid on Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 1, 2011 took approximately 40 minutes. The CIA’s hunt for Osama bin Laden took two decades. Often described as “the loneliest profession on earth,” analysts for the Central Intelligence Agency work fearlessly in the shadows of the front lines in the War on Terror. Nada Bakos served as a Targeting Officer in the Counterterrorism Center—the nerve center for all high value, actionable intelligence in the top-secret war against Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. It is here that Ms. Bakos’ unique skill set thrived in mining and interpreting pertinent pieces of information in volumes of data that eventually played a major role in capturing the most wanted man in history.

David Sedaris On the heels of two sold-out—and side-splittingly funny—performances at the Mondavi Center, David Sedaris, one of America’s preeminent humor writers, makes a welcome return to Jackson Hall. Whether he is reading from one of his many best-selling essay collections, recommending a must-read book or answering questions from the audience, Sedaris remains a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. A frequent contributor to The New Yorker, Sedaris has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards and his original radio pieces can often be heard on This American Life, distributed nationally by Public Radio International. Julian SandsA Celebration of Harold PinterDirected by John Malkovich

Actor Julian Sands is best known for a film career that includes A Room with a View. But early on in his career, he was “apprenticed” by Harold Pinter. The Nobel Prize-winning playwright and poet spent hours with the actor on how his work should be delivered. Every pause. Every nuance in tone. This extraordinary collaboration became the foundation for this rich, humorous solo show, which will be presented on stage in Jackson Hall. Directed by John Malkovich, this celebration brings Pinter—the man—to life through a half-century of his poetry and prose.

MOZART TRANSCENDENTIn 1781, the 25 year-old Wolfgang Mozart moved to Vienna, there to freelance and make his fame and fortune in the capital city of German music. In the ten years that followed, until his death in 1791, he composed more masterworks in more genres than any other composer before or since. The tragedy of Mozart’s early death is compounded by the fact that during the last years of his life, his music acquired an entirely new level of intensity: polyphony intensity; developmental intensity; and waste-not-a-single note expressive intensity. And while we cannot know where Mozart’s muse might have taken him had he lived a longer life, we do know that the late quartets and quintets in this series stand as pre-eminent examples of his mature—and transcendent—musical voice.

Look for announcements about our Spring Granada Artist-in-Residence.

The 2014-15 Department of Theatre and Dance season of also offers many unique student driven productions in the spring including Mainstage Dance, which premieres original work by student choreographers, and our MFA Exploratory Showcase, in which graduating students share their work. We also curate a number of events through ITDP, our institute that invites applications from across campus to investigate various research questions through the medium of performance, often in the framework of a workshop or laboratory context. Past ITDP events include stilt-walking migrations, choreographic explorations of space, and original dramatic work stemming from classroom experiments.

Fall 2014 Granada Artist-in-Residence is Fidelis Morgan who will direct the Restoration comedy The Gambling Lady (Susanna Centlivre’s The Basset Table), which features Lady Reveller presiding over her gaming table, where classes cross and the stakes are high, and she can deflect the attention of her suitor.

Fidelis Morgan has worked as an actor with The Royal Shakespeare Company, repertory companies in Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow, and served as Assistant Director of Glasgow Citizens Theatre. She is the author of Female Wits, which was the first study of Restoration female playwrights. She followed this with Female Playwrights of the Restoration, which Centlivre’s play is collected.

Winter 2015 Granada Artist-in-Residence Bob McGrath will direct a free adaptation of Büchner’s Woyzeck by Neil Labute (author of In the Company of Men and The Shape of Things). Woyzeck, considered by some the first truly modern drama, concerns the dehumanizing effects of doctors and the military on a young man’s life and has continued to fascinate 20th and 21st century composers and playwrights since itsre-discovery.

Bob McGrath is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Ridge Theaterin New York. He has directed theater and opera at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, The American Repertory Theater, Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Vineyard Theater, La MaMa E.T.C.,and Arts at St. Ann’s. He has collaborated with renowned composersand writers and is the recipient of three OBIE awards.
