Afternoon activities for the Week

These activities are provided if you need or want to do more. Please gauge your child’s needs and behaviour. Ask the child what they feel like doing and offer a couple of suggestions so they do not become overwhelmed by the choices.

3. Reading –WHAT'S THE STORY?

This is a visual retelling of the classic Aesop fable: A lion, awakened by a mouse climbing over him, catches the tiny animal in his mighty paw. The mouse appeals for mercy and the lion relents. Soon after, the lion is captured in a poacher's net. The mouse hears his anguished roars and comes to his aid, gnawing the ropes until the great creature is freed.

Listen to Turn the sound down and just look at the pictures. Stop on each page and talk about what is happening.

• The Lion and the Mouse - Bing video

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT ...•Families can talk about kindness. Why does the lion release the mouse? Does he expect anything in return?•How do you think the lion feels when the mouse arrives to free him?•The mouse and the lion are very different animals. In this story, in what ways are they similar?•Before you supply the narrative for each spread, ask your child what she thinks is happening in the story. After you've read it together, encourage your child to take a turn "reading" it out loud to you.

3. Reading

This book is a real treat!

Wordless books exercise our brains in two ways: We become better at understanding pictures…. we call that visual literacy and reading the pictures helps us to grow our imagination and creative thinking. It is a cool, fun experience.

WHAT'S THE STORY?

The owl babies Sarah, Percy and Bill are gorgeous white, fluffy, wide-eyed owlets. They live in the hollow of a tree with their Owl Mother. We are introduced to them in their cosy, safe home with their Mum. They are all together. One night they awake to find that their Owl Mother has gone!

Watch the next story

Owl Babies Picture Book Animation - Bing video

Owl Babies offers the perfect opportunity to explore feelings, anxieties and worries. It is a story charged with emotion and looking at the reactions of the Owl Babies is a good route to discussing a child’s own feelings.

Here are some ideas or questions that you might want to use to start a discussion in your family. You know your family and which questions they are ready to tackle now and which can be left for another day:

How do the Owl Babies feel when they realize their Owl Mother is gone?

How do you feel when the Owl Babies first realize their Owl Mother is gone?

How do you feel when you are dropped off at school/childminder’s/Grandma’s?

What do the Owl Babies do to help them feel better?

The Owl Babies talk to each other and this helps them feel better.

Do you think that talking about your worries can help you feel better?
