A lot has happened since last month’s newsletter……..
What is the future of the Kondinin CRC?
As per recent media announcements made from the newly elected State Government
Minister for the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development with
reference to the reviewing of all Royalties for Regions projects, the future of the
Community Resource Centres statewide is unclear. The Minister has requested a
change to the contract term to enable a review and possible change to the function
and location of CRCs and closing some centres.
What does this mean for the Kondinin CRC?
We have previously operated with a 3 year contract from DRD with Royalty for
Regions funding. We have now been offered an 18 month contract. The Kondinin
CRC is a valuable part of the community, but is not sustainable or viable currently as
a stand alone business without this funding.
We need your support in the way of filling in our comments book as to why the CRC is
important to you and the community—I have sent out emails regarding this and have
only received 7 responses. Whilst these responses are very positive, does it mean
that the CRC is not important to the rest of the community? If we close in March 2019
are you going to miss the services?
Have you used any the following services or attended any of our events?
Wireless & Internet access Email & computer use Photocopying
Faxing or Scanning Secretarial services Office hire
Photo printing Laminating Binding
Centrelink access point Free Government computer BBQ trailer
Book exchange Broadband for Seniors computer
Girls & Boys Club Business Events Youth Week events
Seniors Week events Neighbourhood House week Cooking demo
Biggest Morning tea Children’s activities Sporting fixtures
Funeral brochures Wind-up placemats Exhibition forms
This is a very basic list of services, activities and events that we do at the CRC. We
would appreciate if you could spare 5 minutes of your time and come into the CRC to
fill in the comments book or email us your comment and we will add to the book.
BLACK SWAN LIVE SIMULCAST– SWITZERLAND
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 1ST 7.30PM
When using words for weapons. How far do you go before it cuts too deep?
The late Patricia Highsmith penned some of the most exhilarating suspense novels of all time, some becoming
major cinematic adaptions including : The Price of Salt recently release at the Carol, The Talented Mr Ripely and
Strangers on a Train. Now the acerbic author herself is centre stage in the edge-of-your-seat thriller by acclaimed
Australian playwright Joanna Murray. Played by acclaimed Perth actor, Jenny Davis, Patricia Highsmith lives a
reclusive life in the Swiss Alps surrounded by her collection of books and antique weapons. The unlikeable ge-
nius facing the end of her life had withdrawn completely from the world, finding solace in her seclusion, her cats
and cigarettes. Until one day a young man, Edward Ridgeway, intrudes into her place of refuge. He’s yet an-
other irritating delegate from her publisher demanding a contract for one final instalment. Specifically another
psychological thriller featuring her beloved muse and most infamous literary creation, Tom Ripley.

Kondinin Community Resource Centre partners with Mentally
Healthy WA to deliver the Act-Belong-Commit Message
We are pleased to announce that on the 18th July 2017 we have partnered with Mentally Healthy
WA to deliver the Act-Belong-Commit message. Mentally Healthy WA’s mission is to enhance people’s mental
health and wellbeing by strengthening individual resilience and building community cohesion. The goal of the Act-
Belong-Commit campaign is to encourage people to become more proactive about their mental health.
Why did we decide to Partner?
To increase the mental health and wellbeing of our staff, members, participants, residents and
volunteers.
To increase the reach of the Act-Belong-Commit message and our activities on a state-wide level.
To de-stigmatise mental illness.
To assist our community to reduce the long-term outcomes of mental health problems including depres-
sion, suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, and crime.
To gain more members and volunteers and increase participation in our activities and events.
To embed campaign messages and strategies into existing programs and activities.
To change perceptions of mental health to encompass wellbeing.
To create a sense of community connectedness and increase individual resilience.
We have just received a box full of goodies which includes information sheets and various resources and they will be
on display shortly at the CRC.
We are very excited to be able to partner with such a well-known and approved WA health campaign.

Events and Courses Held Recently by the CRC
PUBLISHER BASICS: This was held on 29th June and was run by Ian Holland. Five participants
sharpened up their Publisher skills and learnt how to perfectly insert shapes; insert images from a
google search; cropping images; change colour of an image by recolouring, brightness or contrast.
We also learn how to use the mail merge tool. Canva, a free program available on the internet, was
briefly introduced. This is similar to Publisher, but has a multitude of pre-made templates from
which you can base your designs on.
NAIDOC WEEK ART PROJECT AND TRADITIONAL GAMES: On Thursday 6th July, the CRC
participated in the Cultural Workshop organised by the Kondinin Shire at the Community Garden.
The six seasons of the Nyoongar culture had been depicted on six poles through a painting work-
shop facilitated by Ashley Collard. A BBQ was provided by the Shire of Kondinin to feed the large
group of participants that were involved in the project. The CRC BBQ was used to cook the lunch. I
then organised some traditional Indigenous sports, which included kai wed—hitting a ball whilst at-
tempting to keep it in the air for as long as they can; koolchee which is a ball-throwing and hitting
game, where the aim is to hit a ball rolled by an opposition with your own ball; pukamitjal was a
keep-away game similar to piggy in the middle; Thirring-nunna which is a hide and seek game.
WA ROCKS: On the 13th July six children and four adults joined in the newest craze called WA
Rocks. Using rocks already pre-painted the rocks were decorated using nail polish and permanent
markers. Whilst the rocks were being glossed, the participants headed over to Trembath Park to
look for the rocks that had been hidden that morning. Once found, they were allowed to keep one
and had to re-hide the others. The collection of rocks where then distributed to the artists and
hopefully have been hidden on their travels.
BUSINESS BASICS WORKSHOP: On the 20th July, Julie Flockart from RSM Business Local
presented to a group of five the fundamentals of starting up a business. Julie guided us through the
basics of a small business. This included starting with an idea and planning it; marketing your
brand; financial planning; start-up costs; licences and what planning applications are needed. She
also discussed on-going sales opportunities for our business.
