MARLENE BRODY The news that NYRA's Board had votedunanimously--except for Barry Ostarger's lone andheroic Anay@--to raise fees on admissions, parking, boxes etc, and executive pay at NYRA racetracksflabbergasted me. In fact, despite waiting some time tosimmer down, I am still angry. Racetracks are a place people come to gamble. So arecasinos. Casinos lure customers with free admission, complimentary food and drink, entertainment, a variedchoice of restaurants and bars and a host of otherenticements. For big rollers, the lure can be freeaccommodations in lovely hotel suites, free returnflights, and who knows what more. All with the hopeand often the result that these people spend hours inwindowless rooms (heaven forbid they realize the timeof day or night) losing astounding amounts of money. The lure of the racetrack is a day, for the wholefamily if so desired, in the open air in parklike settings, the sight of beautiful horses, jockeys, superb athletesall, the intellectual challenge of handicapping races, andthe thrill and excitement of the races themselves. Forthis, however, the customer must pay admission, parking, overpriced food and drink and is expected togamble good money on a game too many now believeis infested by drugs. At least, recently, honest andbelievable efforts are being made to correct this graveproblem. Comparisons are being made with baseball, football, basketball, etc., where admission and other fees areextremely high. But, please correct me if I am wrong:gambling on these games is still illegal, except in LasVegas. The biggest gamble in racing is made by breeders andowners. Without them there is no show. Without themunemployment soars because this industry is laborintensive. Attendance is down because it is an expensiveouting--maybe the same reason baseball stadiums areempty nowadays. Because of enormous technological advances, theraces can be seen on multiple screens and bets can beplaced over the Internet. So how to lure people to the live enjoyment of a dayat the races? Certainly not by making it more expensive. Rather, bymaking it less expensive Free admission, free parking, affordable rates forclubhouse seats, better and less expensive food andbeverage. Charge less for the concessions. Take a smallpercentage from the gross. Give concessionaires anincentive to make money, to compete to have the besthamburger, the best hot dog, etc.

Have known designers compete to have the coolesthorse related caps, T-shirts, umbrellas, scarves, ties, etc., for sale. No giveaway days. Limited editions. Itbecomes a real choice. A very special souvenir. Everyhundredth person entering the track gets $10 to betwith. There are so many other ways to lure people. At important race meets when attendance is highanyway, then have admission fees and higher fees forboxes and seats and parking, if you must. People willcome because those are the days they want to see andbe seen. Do not raise them too high. People aren't foolsand don't like being taken as such. Make all other race days a real bargain to go to theracetrack, and not a financial burden. And this includesSaratoga, except those really big race days. A day at the races should be much more fun andlucrative (lower the take out) than staying at homewatching on TV and betting over the Internet. Have more respect and take better care of thebreeders and owners. They are the ones who take thebiggest gamble. Without them, you have nothing. How about executive pay raises after you make somemoney, not before. We have enough problems as an industry. We don'tneed any more nails hammered into the coffin.BMarlene Brody, Gallaghers Stud

JOANNE NOR: I read with interest the letter from Barry Irwin to theTDN in Tuesday's edition regarding Lasix. Othercomplications exist from Lasix and otherpharmaceuticals and environmental toxins. When theherbicide Glyphosate is combined with these pre-racepharmaceuticals and any other sources ofenvironmental toxins, they can be lethal, as was notedby MIT researchers in the latest information on theeffects of Glyphosate. It is quoted to be "the mostbiologically disruptive chemical in our environment," byMIT researchers and connects it with over 40 diseases.Similarly, a Russian study done on the herbicide notedbody malfunctions such as total sterility after threegenerations of use. We are in the third generation nowregarding exposure to our horses as Glyphosate wasintroduced in the nineties. Glyphosate is used in our horse feed through thecrops: sugar beets (in all sweet feed), soy, corn, somewheat, some flax, alfalfa, and bluegrass hay.Thehighest amounts are found in grains and sugar crops. These feed stuffs make up at least 75-100% of dailyfeed rations in our Thoroughbred racehorses. The good news is that on December 6th on the bigisland of Hawaii, Mayor Bill Kenoi signed a BiotechGMO ban into law, stopping the use of Glyphosate inHawaii This action sets a precedent that other statesmay follow. Just two months ago, Mexico banned allGMOS because of the health issues with GMO corn intheir country. Many nations have completely banned GMOS andGlyphosate, and some have severe restrictions. One of the findings of the MIT researchers is that itmagnifies the toxicity of any environmental toxin ordrug introduced to the body by disallowing the liver tobe able to de-toxify, and also that it simultaneously hasthe propensity of separating the endothelial wall of theheart's aorta, potentially setting the body up formassive hemorrhaging and cardiac arrest. Theelectrolyte-robbing power of Lasix just adds to thatscenario. This is my point: the combination of these thingscreate these potential dangers, and others, and weaken the life, and performance of our starperformers in the Thoroughbred industry. Not only dowe need to stop the drugs, we need to stop biotechpoison for profit in our horses' food chain. We need tolabel our feeds, so owners, breeders, trainers may makethe call and educate on what is in our horses (and dogs'and cats') food. I equate this to the cigarette package. How many had to die before something was done? I amfor the health of our horses, and we need to geteducated on what this toxic chemicalis doing to our breed, and all breeds. The Lasix is icing on the already baked cake, evenbefore these horses get to the track.

For more information on GMOs and Glyphosate, go towww.vitatracwellness.com for a PDF of the MIT study, entitled Glyphosate's suppression of cytochrome P450enzymes and amino acid biosynthesis by the gutmichrobiome: pathways to modern diseases.-Joanne Nor

Those two rivals exchanged bumps before Coup deGrace found his best stride and inched clear late to winby one length. Hy Kodiak Warrior was second and Goneas Wind (Smart Strike) was third. AHe=s still learning the game, and that was one of thereasons this horse didn=t run at Saratoga,@ winningtrainer Chad Brown said. AHe had all the talent in theworld, and he was having some behavioral issues in themorning so we decided not to put him through thepressure of Saratoga. It=s so busy up there, and he wasshowing some greenness intermittently in his training.Training for Fox Hill is great because [owner RickPorter] just said, >When he=s ready, run him.= He got ittogether this fall, and he=s doing real well.@ Coup de Grace=s performance impressed jockey JavierCastellano. AI let him see a target in the beginning andhe rated pretty good, very kind,@ Castellano said.ATurning for home, sometimes with young horses theylook around a little bit but as soon as the horse came tohim on the outside, he was focused. He just took off.He has a lot of talent, and we=re looking forward towhat=s next.@ Brown added a stakes race could be nextup for the talented colt. AThe [Jan. 25 GII] Holy Bullwould be a strong possibility because he=s here, he=srun over the track and he loves training here,@ Brownsaid. AI=ll discuss that with Mr. Porter and, first andforemost, see how the horse is doing out of the race. We=ll make sure we have him nominated everywhere, and we=ll start to test this horse around two turns morethan likely.@ Cont. p2

Click for the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree. John Greathouse admits he has a soft spot for filliesby Malibu Moon and, understandably so, after theexploits of Devil May Care, who carried his family=sGlencrest Farm silks to victories in the 2009 GI FrizetteS. and 2010 GI Mother Goose S. and GI Coaching ClubAmerican Oaks, as well as a tilt at the GI KentuckyDerby. Glencrest was back in the winner=s circle withanother daughter of Malibu Moon yesterday atGulfstream Park when Onlyforyou won a six-furlongallowance by a confident 3 1/2 lengths. Greathousepurchased the bay filly for $115,000 out of the 2012Keeneland September sale.

AI have to be careful with these Malibu Moonsbecause I=m remembering what Devil May Care lookedlike and I see some of her in these horses and I getmyself carried away,@ Greathouse admitted Sunday.A[Onlyforyou] didn=t look exactly like her, but sheclosely enough resembled her where I thought for thekind of money we were spending, she was worth thechance.@ The initial plan was to sell the filly as a 2-year-old thispast spring, but she failed to attract the bidders at theKeeneland April sale. AShe had some vet issues that we were willing to livewith and obviously the 2-year-old people weren=t willingto live with and then the race people weren=t willing tolive with either, so that is the reason we still have her,@Greathouse explained. AShe was at Keeneland, but shedidn=t work good. She had worked better in the pre-breeze, but that day, for whatever reason, she waslooking around and didn=t work that good.@ Onlyforyou didn=t make her first start until Nov. 10,when she won her six-furlong debut by 2 1/4 lengths atAqueduct. Greathouse thinks the extra time helped thefilly. AIt might have been some of these physical thingsthat she needed to work her way through,@ Greathousesaid. ASome of these Malibu Moons, they are not nearlyas precocious as 2-year-old people want them to be.They may want more ground and to expect some ofthese horses to go in there in :10 1/5 and then go amile and an eighth in their 2-year-old year is sometimesstretching the imagination. You=ve got to see somethingto say >Yes, this horse didn=t work that fast, but shegalloped out good and I=ll sit and wait for her.=@ Still, Greathouse had seen enough from Onlyforyouthat he jumped at the chance to buy the filly=s dam outof this year=s Keeneland November sale. Just two daysbefore Onlyforyou broke her maiden at Aqueduct,Greathouse signed the ticket at $50,000 for Erhu(Tactical Cat). AI told the people [selling the mare], I think this fillycan run,@ Greathouse said. AThey said it was apartnership that was selling out and they didn=t have achoice. I said, >OK. As long as you know that I like thefilly.=@ Cont. p3

The graded-stakes placed Erhu, now 12 and in foal toTo Honor and Serve, is also the dam of Dress the Part(Malibu Moon), a $700,000 Keeneland Septemberyearling in 2010. Her Street Boss colt, Wise Boss, brought $250,000 at the 2011 September sale and herfilly by Blame brought $170,000 at this year=s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. AI was surprised,@Greathouse admitted aboutErhu=s $50,000 price tag.ALet=s face it, they sold somehigh-priced foals out of thatmare, so I was surprised toget her at that level. I waswilling to pay more for her,but I was glad to get her atthat level.@ After Onlyforyou=sperformance Sunday,Greathouse said Erhu willmost likely be visiting MalibuMoon again in 2014. A[Before Sunday] I said, >Ihave to wait and see this filly run back and know thatI=ve got more than a filly who just broke her maidenbefore I spend that kind of money to breed to MalibuMoon,=@ Greathouse explained. ABut now, in allprobability, that is where she=ll go.

Let=s face it, when somebody buys a $50,000 mareand you=re talking about a $90,000-$100,000 season--they don=t make any sense together. And you and Iboth know that breaking your maiden is a long wayfrom a 40-year marriage.@ As for plans for Erhu=s To Honor and Serve foal,Greathouse explained, AMost of these things we buy, they are for sale. If it=s a filly, I=ll look at it differently, but if it=s a colt, I=ll sell it.@ In the more near-future, Greathouse is lookingforward to watching Onlyforyou stretch out to twoturns. AI=m sure Mr. [Todd] Pletcher will bring up somethingin five or six weeks,@ Greathouse said of Onlyforyou=snext outing. AAnd hopefully, it=s two turns and we startto find out if that is something she wants. He=ll tell me.The only thing he said to me was, >I think she is a nicefilly,= and that=s probably as much praise as you=re goingto get out of him.@ -Jessica Martini
