Pete Ricketts will attempt to lower taxes for homeowners, farmers and military retirees this year while setting aside money to help the state recover from the historic 2019 floods. The governor tells The Associated Press he’ll present law- makers with a property tax package during the new legislative session that begins Wednesday. He says he’ll also continue push- ing for one of his earlier priorities, a tax exemption for military retirees equal to half of their half of their benefit income. Ricketts and lawmakers will have more revenue at their disposal this year, thanks to higher-than-expected tax collections over the last sev- eral months. SEEKING INFORMATION The Nebraska State Patrol is seeking information on the where- abouts of two California men wanted for questioning in connection to a homicide investigation in Porterville, California. The men were last seen in the area of North Platte, Nebraska on Sunday. The persons of interest are Chris Corbit, 25, and Jeremy Bailey, 20. The two are brothers, and both are considered armed and dan- gerous. The two men may be driving a white, two-door 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which may be bearing the Nebraska li- cense plate 15-EN83. Any person who sees these men or the vehi- cle is urged not to approach them, but call 911 immediately. Any- one with information regarding the location of either Bailey or Corbit can leave an anonymous tip with the Nebraska Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-422-1494. 2020 SESSION Senators are pretty much in agreement the 2020 session will be taken up with property taxes, business tax incentives and what to do with excess tax collections over the past year. Last year, the long 90-day session ended a few days early, with no resolution on those key issues senators had worked throughout the session to resolve. They got a warning from Speaker Jim Scheer in those last days about what would happen in a 2020 short session that lasts only 60 days. "The short session is a completely different session," he said then. "Be prepared for a number, if not an extensive num- ber, of late nights in order to facilitate all the priority bills." Lin- coln Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks had her own vision for the session that starts Wednesday, and beyond, for senators. Greater com- munication, greater compassion, greater ability to listen. And nix the confrontation. That means, no one stomping their feet on the floor in a "my way or the highway" gesture, she said. "It doesn't do anybody any good. Nothing gets done. It doesn't help our con- stituents in Nebraska at all." Nebraska's unicameral government is a treasure in the middle of a country where other governments -- national and state, maybe even local -- are unable to get things done because of partisanship and refusal to work together, she said.
