Metsä Board Starts-up New 400,000 tpy Folding Boxboard Production Line

Midwest Converting – A Valued Partner in Converting and Distribution

Metsä Board recently started up a new folding boxboard production line at its Husum mill in Sweden. The company is aiming the 400,000 tons per year volume of the new line at the Americas, as well as at food service end-uses such as cups, plates and trays globally. “Thanks to the new production line and our recent product develop-ment, we are now able to respond to food service packaging requirements and demand better than ever before,” said CEO Mika Joukio. According to the company, the fold-ing boxboard machine, BM1, is the most significant part of the EUR 170 million investment program carried out at the Husum mill site. As part of

the program, enhancements have also been made at the pulp mill and the mill site’s own port. As a whole, this investment program completes the company’s transformation pro-cess to a pure paperboard company. In November of 2015, Metsä Board also announced it is investing an ad-ditional EUR 38 million in a new ex-trusion coating line and related in-frastructure in Husum. Start-up for this line is expected at the beginning of 2017. The Husum mill employs 780 peo-ple and has an annual capacity to produce 400,000 tonnes of folding boxboard; 300,000 tonnes of liner-board; 750,000 tonnes of bleached kraft pulp.

As the paper market continues to face new challenges, companies will need to continue enhancing cus-tomer satisfaction, quickly respond to changes in the business environ-ment, and provide improved ways to enhance bottom line company performance. Midwest Converting’s President, Rob Srebalus, says his company is in the business of providing a manu-facturing and distribution-based competitive advantage to its cus-tomers geared towards their com-pany goals and business strategy. “Midwest Converting works with companies to understand their busi-ness approach and the kind of com-petitive advantage it is pursuing. With our operational experience in the converting and distribution in-dustry, we apply our knowledge to present viable solutions to our cus-tomers that enable them the ability to adopt new strategic game changing approaches in order to generate en-hanced supplier value,” said Srebalus. “While shifting to outside convert-ing services on a holistic basis defies conventional wisdom for many, we continue to demonstrate how our business model contributes signifi-

cantly to competitive success, add-ing value to our customers. Compa-nies that embrace change, welcome new and unconventional suppliers, seek new alliances and connect with customers in a less constrained en-vironment will likely increase their share of the value chain, potentially gaining and sustaining competitive advantage,” Srebalus noted. Midwest Converting not only ware-houses, converts, and distributes customer-owned inventory, but also provides complete operational supply chain platforms for customers that deliver bottom-line performance. “When the proper converting pro-gram can be put in place to meet the requirements of a target mar-ket or end user, the benefits of an outsourcing partner like Midwest Converting could become the value- added identity that enhances a com-pany’s value proposition,” Srebalus said. And the benefits of an outsourc-ing strategy with Midwest Convert-ing can be significant. “We feel that paper mills and merchants should consider carefully how our business model can improve their business and position them for long term financial viability,” Srebalus added.

Buckman announced that the year 2015 marked the company’s 70th anniversary. Buckman is a privately held, global specialty chemical company serving cus-tomers all over the world in the pulp and paper, water treatment and leather-making industries. Buckman’s global headquarters is in Memphis, Tennessee, situated on the same spot as the original build-ing, which opened in 1945. As World War II was coming to a close, and industry began ad-dressing problems closer to home, Dr. Stanley J. Buckman, a biochem-

ist who had been working to develop a decay-resistant wood for military use, was aware of microbiological problems that existed in the manu-facture of pulp and paper. He had an idea for a product that would mitigate the problems for the pa-permaker, and his confidence in

the idea led to the establishment of Buckman Laboratories. As the company began in 1945, of-fices and laboratories were located side-by-side on the first floor of a tiny building. Manufacturing facili-ties were modest — a 55-gallon pro-cess vessel strategically placed in the basement of the building would manufacture the company’s only product. And on October 19, 1945, Buckman made its first sale of 200 pounds of that product to the com-pany’s first customer, Whiting Paper Company in Holyoke, Mass. The company began expanding

internationally before the decade was over, and today, boasts a pres-ence in more than 90 countries. Of course, the product catalog changed and grew over time, but the focus on the pulp and paper industry re-mains; and Buckman has built an immense presence in several other industries. Today, Buckman’s extensive and innovative technologies are manu-factured in the United States, Can-ada, Mexico, Brazil, Belgium, South Africa, China and Singapore. Buckman’s 1,700 global associ-ates operate under the leadership of Steven B. Buckman, CEO, who celebrated his personal 40-year an-niversary with Buckman in 2014, and Kathy Buckman Gibson, presi-dent and COO for Buckman Interna-tional, who is the third generation of Buckman family leadership. “When I look back over our histo-ry, I am sure that Dr. Stanley Buck-man would be proud of how Buck-man has continued to grow and thrive,” said Steve Buckman. “We have thrived because we have been willing to adapt and change yet re-main Buckman at our core — a com-pany focused on our customers.” Buckman’s 70-year journey thus far has been full of achievements and accolades, including two U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for its enzymatic technologies. Buckman, which re-ports to the Global Reporting Initia-tive on a biannual basis, prides itself on being an environmentally con-scious manufacturer, with an ongo-ing commitment to transparency in reporting and continuous improve-ment in sustainability. Furthermore, environmental out-reach is one of the three prongs of the company’s philanthropic ini-tiative, BuckmanCares — the other two being education and health and human services. Each year, the BuckmanCares efforts of associates all over the globe positively impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of Buckman’s partners, friends and neighbors. For the past 70 years, Buckman has remained constant in its focus on customers and stewardship. With such a long, rich history, it’s impos-sible to recount all of the highlights, developments and accolades Buck-man has seen over the years. But if one thing is clear, it is that this company has greatly impacted its associates, its customers, surround-ing communities, the industry as a whole, and products, processes and people all over the world.

The president of The Fiber Resource Group (TFRG), Marc Cooper, has ventured into many areas of the paper industry during his 26 years in business. His passion and com-mitment for the paper industry has included varied and different expe-riences as a broker, converter, entre-preneur, inventor and manufacturer. Cooper founded TFRG in 1996, af-ter working for the Newark Group’s recycling division in Salem, Mass. for 6 years. In the early 2000’s TFRG opened a warehousing operation in Madawaska, Maine, to service a few key mills in Northern Maine and Eastern Canada. The Fiber Resource Group of Maine was then established and eventually moved and expanded the operation and scope of services it offered in 2005 to a rail-served modern facility with converting capabilities in Van Buren, Maine. Some of the milestones in the his-tory of TFRG include investing in and helping to restart Dirigo Paper in Gil-man, Vermont (formerly Simpson Paper) in 2004. Cooper says he’s most proud of playing a major role in put-ting over 120 former employees back to work when the mill reopened. In 2008, Cooper invested in and helped start Lynxus LLC, a 100,000 sq. ft., full service warehouse, logis-tics and converting operation in Au-burn, Maine. While operating TFRG of Maine, Cooper identified a need for a faster

and more cost effective machine to convert small and often damaged rolls of paper. As a result, he con-tacted the Advanced Manufacturing School at the University of Maine and spent over 5 years developing a machine to quickly and effectively resize rolls of paper. Cooper established Black Bear Manufacturing, and in 2015, after 10 years in development, he finally received a patent for his Roll Sizing machine and is actively seeking a strategic customer to purchase the first, next generation machine. In 2010, Cooper invented an arts and crafts product for kids, and founded Imagination Brands, LLC, a company that manufactures and sells paper-based children’s arts and crafts products, most notably the Doodle Roll® activity kit. Made in the USA, the Doodle Roll has been sold in over 10,000 locations, including national chains such as Walmart and Rite Aid. In 2014, TFRG moved from Maine to its current operation in Gardner, Mass. The Gardner facility provides a myriad of services to mills, convert-ers, recyclers and end users of many different types of paper and finished products. Some of these services in-clude: rewinding, roll saw and sal-vage cutting, cutting and baling, warehousing and storage, converting rolls and sheets for packaging paper, arts and crafts, stationary products and more.

The Paper2016 Luncheon, spon-sored by International Paper Com-pany, will be held tomorrow, March 8. Kevin Kallaugher (Kal), an inter-national award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Economist and The Baltimore Sun, will headline the luncheon. Over the past 36 years, Kal’s work has appeared in more than 100 publications worldwide, including Le Monde, The International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Re-port, and The Washington Post. At the Paper2016 luncheon, Kal will talk about the role paper has played in his career and in politi-cal discourse. His diverse portfolio includes more than 8,000 cartoons, 140 covers, and six books. He will also share his unique take on current events, politics, and the economy. Kal has garnered international honors and awards in seven coun-

tries and held exhibitions of his work in 12. He was a 2015 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning and won the 2015 Herblock Prize and the 2014 Grand Prix for Cartoon of the Year in Europe. In addition to cartoons, his work includes three award-winning, illustrated wall cal-endars; acclaimed animations; and a 2008 board game about the finan-cial crisis entitled “Credit Crunch.” In 2013, he published the major ret-rospective collection entitled Dag-gers Drawn: 35 Years of Kal Cartoons in The Economist. During the luncheon, the NPTA Stanley O. Styles Industry Excel-lence Award will be presented to Bill Koehn, vice president of printing & publishing paper sales at Domtar. The Paper2016 Luncheon will be held Tuesday, March 8 from 12:00 to 2:15 p.m. in the Villard Ballroom. The luncheon is a separately ticketed event.

Imex Paper Recognized in Southern Florida for its Exporting OperationsThe U.S. Small Business Adminis-tration (SBA) recently recognized Imex Paper of Miami, Florida, with its South Florida District Small Busi-ness Exporter of the Year Award,

which was presented by Congress-woman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to company president, Luis Tome. Imex Paper, an international paper trading company, has over ten years of experience in both Latin Ameri-ca and North America, with steady growth in terms of paper sales. The company offers a differentiated ser-vice as a result of placing a specific product at the best market price ac-cording to customers’ needs. “Imex Paper offers the perfect bridge between the mills and the fi-nal buyer, being accountable for the sourcing of the product, its trans-portation, financing, marketing and logistics,” said Tome. Imex Paper is strategically located near the ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which provides for prompt and efficient service by both sea and land. Its modern warehouse has direct railroad access that allows the company to receive rolls at very convenient freight rates. Tome says that after the opening of their conversion plant in 2015, delivery time of products to custom-ers was reduced by 70% as a result of being able to ship from their stock in Miami.

Imex Paper is strategically lo-cated near the ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which provides for prompt and efficient service

by both sea and land.

“Our new plant allows us to pro-vide our customers with paper in special sizes, precisely cut and shipped in a short time, thanks to our privileged location in Miami,” Tome explained. Tome also noted that the plant operates with some of the most modern conversion equipment in the U.S., which gives it the ability to convert a wide range of products and basis weights with high produc-tivity and competitive prices. Besides its conversion services, Imex works like a logistics operator, maintaining inventory for fast ship-ment. In addition, Imex Credit LLC was honored by the Beacon Council and Miami-Dade County with the Bea-con Award and the Key to Miami-Dade County, and the company was nominated to the “Florida Compa-nies to Watch Award”, sponsored by Grow Florida.

Monday’s General Session will focus on the Paper2016

theme, Genera-tion Paper.

Paper products are useful and valuable to each

generation, in both similar and dif-ferent ways. How do we continue to attract young generations to our industry, not only as consumers but also as employees? Guest speaker Eric Chester is a leading voice and a trusted source in the global dialogue on employee engagement and building a world-class workplace culture. For almost 20 years, he has been an in-the-trenches researcher who’s been studying, analyzing, speaking and

writing about the emerging work-force and the dynamics of attract-ing, managing, motivating and re-taining top talent. Chester is the author of Employ-ing Generation Why: Understanding, Managing, and Motivating Your New Workforce, which advises companies and organizations on the emerging generation and how they can better connect with young employees. Don’t miss this lively presentation focused on tactics and strategies your business can employ to better connect with young employees and attract new talent. Sponsored by Sappi, the General Session takes place today, 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., in the Villard Ballroom on the 2nd floor. Full Access Pass re-quired for admission.

Case Paper has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to growth through investment in state-of-the-art technologies. The company’s lat-est equipment pur-chase — a Maxson MDH Dual Knife Rotary Sheeter — provides custom-sized web rolls and sheets of both paper and paperboard. With its ability to sheet up to four web rolls from 16”– 81”, the new machine can accommodate the needs of the dig-ital, folio, and large-format markets. The sheeter’s high-speed cutter is outfitted with a reject gate and a high-capacity stacker that uses a scissors lift-load table that can change out skids without having to stop production (it takes less than 60 seconds to remove a skid, insert an empty pallet, and raise the load ta-ble into position). Moreover, the use of air helps even light-weight paper remain jam-free when flowing into the stacker. “This new sheeter will allow us to support even more customers that need sheets for both short and long-run jobs. It also improves our con-

verting times, which is great news for printers and packaging compa-nies that have to turn around a job quickly,” said Robin Schaffer, Presi-

dent and COO of Case Paper Co. Over the past sev-en years, Case Pa-per has added five sheeters and eight pieces of convert-ing equipment to its paper processing resources, enabling the company to quickly convert pa-per and paperboard and deliver skids or rolls anywhere in the

U.S., usually within 48 hours or less. Supported by a skilled workforce and a solutions-based manage-ment team, this latest purchase will help Case Paper to continue to pro-vide excellent customer service, the highest quality sheet, and efficient turn-around times. Established in 1943, Case Paper Co. is one of the largest privately held distributor and converter of paper and board for the packaging and printing industries. The com-pany has divisions in California, Pennsylvania, New York, Chicago, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina. For more info, visit www.casepaper.com.

Seaman Paper Company Earns AF&PA Sustainability AwardThe American Forest & Paper As-sociation (AF&PA) announced that Seaman Paper Company earned a 2015 Leadership in Sustainabil-ity Award for Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction. Designed to recognize exemplary sustainability programs and initia-tives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry, AF&PA’s annual sustainability awards are given based on the merit of entries received across multiple categories. Based in Massachusetts, Seaman Paper received the award for their Soft Steps Forward Initiative. “Sea-man Paper’s achievements in ad-

vancing their energy efficiency are a testament to their perseverance and ingenuity, which is sure to lead to continuous improvement in years to come,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. As part of the Soft Steps Forward Initiative, Seaman Paper commit-

ted to decrease their purchased fuel and electricity dependency. Seaman Paper now produces 97 percent of their steam requirements from car-bon-neutral biomass, and installed a backpressure turbine that runs on steam to meet their electricity needs. These measures helped decrease Sea-man Paper’s total energy cost despite the sharp increases in oil and elec-tricity costs over the past decade.

“Many thanks to AF&PA for rec-ognizing our achievements in en-ergy conservation,” said George Jones, President and CEO of Seaman Paper. “We are proud of our suc-cess in establishing an economically feasible project for a mill of our size.” For more information about the Sustainability Awards program and AF&PA’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 initiative, visit afandpa.org/sustainability.

Glatfelter to Build New Advanced Airlaid Materials Facility in the U.S.

UPM Launches High Quality, Lightweight Printing Paper – UPM Valor

Glatfelter said that it will invest ap-proximately $80 million to build a new production facility in the Unit-ed States for its Advanced Airlaid Materials business (AMBU). The company is currently evaluating location options, primarily in the southern United States. “Our Advanced Airlaid Materials business is a glob-al growth plat-form that has a unique opportu-nity to capitalize on increasing and unmet demand in North America for the materials used in lighter-weight hygiene and disposable wipes prod-ucts,” said Dante C. Parrini, Chair-man and CEO. “Our plan to build this new facility is in direct response to customer needs for increased ca-pacity in a tightening North Ameri-can airlaid market.” The new facility is expected to have an annual capacity of approxi-mately 22,000 short tons, increasing the company’s total global airlaid materials capacity to approximate-ly 129,000 short tons. In support of market growth, the investment is supported by customer com-mitment to purchase a significant amount of the annual capacity. In addition, the new facility will es-tablish a specialty asset base in the United States and create a center of excellence for other lighter basis weight products.

Glatfelter anticipates production will start in approximately two years and the project will be funded by a combination of cash on hand and its existing credit facility. “We are planning to locate this facility in close proximity to sev-

eral key customers and highly efficient transportation routes in the south-ern U.S., as well as where we have additional access to a high-quality, skilled workforce,” said Chris W. Ast-ley, Senior Vice President & Busi-

ness Unit President, Advanced Air-laid Materials. “Identifying an op-timal location for this facility will provide Glatfelter and its customers with logistics and supply chain ben-efits, and opportunities for collabo-ration. “Our Advanced Airlaid Materials business enjoys excellent customer relationships, and we expect this new facility will provide us with ad-ditional competitive advantage to support long term growth,” Astley added. Glatfelter’s Advanced Airlaid Ma-terials Business Unit has leading positions in the feminine hygiene, adult incontinence, wipes and home care markets globally, and its products are also used in food pack-aging and industrial applications. Its existing production facilities are located in Canada and Germany.

The new facility is ex-pected to have an annual

capacity of approximately 22,000 short tons,

increasing Glatfelter’s total global airlaid mate-rials capacity to approxi-

mately 129,000 short tons.

After several years of development, UPM has launched a revolutionary paper grade — UPM Valor. The new, high quality and competitive print-ing paper grade is designed espe-cially for magazine publishers and brand owners. According to UPM, the new paper grade provides savings in mailing and delivery costs without compro-mising on quality. “We have taken a massive leap forward in the develop-ment of papers designed to support customers concerned with increas-ing mailing costs,” says Jennifer Wilkerson, Business Development and Marketing Manager for UPM. The truly sustainable new paper grade was created to respond to changing market dynamics. Brands

recognize the value of the printed product, yet they increasingly need to compete with other media. UPM Valor’s unique combination of lighter weight and substantial feel allows catalogers and publishers to respond to rising mailing costs while maintaining premium quality. Since fewer raw materials are needed, UPM Valor has a smaller environ-mental footprint as well. “This is a win on multiple fronts for publishers, catalogers, and retailers who are looking for premium quality, cost savings, and proven environmen-tal stewardship,” Wilkerson added. UPM Valor can be ordered with PEFC or FSC certification and is avail-able in three basis weights that offer more printing surface per ton of paper.

Streco Fibres Adapts Business Model to Evol-ving IndustrySince 1988, Streco Fibres has been a leading supplier and distributor of kraft and specialty papers to con-verters in the US and overseas. With stocking programs, flexible payment terms, made-to-order tonnage, and customized deliveries, Streco’s president, John Strelitz said that his company is dedicated to provid-ing first-class service to customers throughout the world. “With a business model based on bringing balance of supply and de-mand within expanding economic markets, Streco strives to increase customers’ cash flow and grow their businesses worldwide,” said Strelitz. Burrows Paper Corporation an-nounced that it recently introduced its new, proprietary EcoInfuse™ fil-tration paper for tea bags. The new filtration paper provides outstand-ing crimping and folding properties to assure dependable tea bag forma-tion and quality. According to Burrows, EcoInfuse is an abaca-free formula, enabling a reliable supply at a lower cost through the absence of abaca crop fluctuations that can result in vola-tile pricing. When Burrows was expanding production capacity for EcoInfuse, which is produced on PM12 at the

company’s mill in Little Falls, New York, the upgrade involved invest-ing in a new Quality Control System at the mill. Burrows points out that stringent quality control for sheet moisture is necessary for this new and different filtration paper. The QCS upgrade provided the mill with improved cross-direction (CD) basis weight control and CD moisture control, as CD uniformity is critical for the paper to run well for Burrows’ customers. Burrows operates four paper mills and six packaging facilities in the U.S. and worldwide. The company produces paper and paper prod-

ucts used in food packaging and a variety of special industrial pro-cesses, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. Burrows holds certifications from ISO 9001, HACCP, Forest Steward-ship Council, Sustainable Forest Initiative, and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certifi-cation. The company incorpo-rates nearly 100 years of paper- making experience into its food packaging line of products and is one of only a few compa-nies capable of producing light weight printable tissue paper from 7.5 to 34 pounds.

Portucel Soporcel Group announced the recent completion and start-up of two expansion projects at pulp and paper mills in Cacia and Vila Velha de Ródão, Portugal. The projects represent a total investment of EUR 95.3 million. The Group also an-nounced plans to invest a further EUR 120 million in Cacia, through to 2017, on a new tissue pa-per production line. The projects are part of Portucel Soporcel’s strategic plans to expand and diversify its business over the next few years. The project at the Cacia complex (EUR 56 million) included an ex-pansion of its pulp mill, which in-creased pulp production capacity at the mill by 20% — from 294,000 tpy to 353,000 tpy of BEKP (Bleached Eucalyptus Kraft Pulp). The project also allowed the mill to increase its production of renewable energy by about 9%, to a total of 336.7 MW/year. The changes at the Cacia mill have also incorporated the latest indus-

trial and environmental technology, which has significantly improved the mill’s impact on air and water quality. The project is expected to boost the Group’s annual exports to

more than 120 coun-tries by a further EUR 30 million, Portucel Soporcel added. At AMS BR Star Paper, which Portucel Sopor-cel acquired early in

2015, a new tissue line was started up that has doubled the production capacity of the plant from 30,000 tpy to 60,000 tpy. The mill is situated in the Iberian Peninsula, located in Vila Velha de Rodão, Portugal. Portucel Soporcel Group is the leading European manufacturer, and the sixth largest in the world, of uncoated woodfree (UWF) print-ing and writing paper. The Group is also Europe’s top producer of BEKP, and the fifth largest in the world. The Group sells its products to 127 countries over five continents, with a special focus on Europe and the US, giving it the largest export base of any Portuguese company.

U Route LLC announced that its user-friendly Transportation Man-agement Software (TMS) has been designed to tighten the link between shippers and carriers. The company said its TMS offers a host of robust features in a scalable web-based platform and is a great option for companies that have out-grown spreadsheets and are seeking something that’s extremely straight-forward and easy to adopt. Shippers have one platform to communicate, measure and manage all their con-tract transportation providers and rates. U Route offers a full suite of tools that include direct e-carrier man-agement, user-friendly procure-ment, RFQ development, bid ca-pabilities, load tendering, robust analytics, and more. All these fea-tures in a simple and sleek interface that’s accessible anywhere with an Internet connection. U Route will help take a logistics team to the next level of efficiency and cost savings, according to the company. U Route was specifically designed

for shippers wanting to maintain control over their logistics opera-tions. Shippers that remain directly connected to their carrier partners receive better service and more reli-able pricing from their carriers. With U Route software, shippers in every industry can make logistics a core competency. “There are several reasons why companies use outside sources to make logistics decisions, but the only valid reason is to save money. Unfortunately, using outside pro-viders can cost a company, on aver-age, 18% of its total transportation spend,” U Route said in a press re-lease. “There was a time, not too long ago, when shippers needed a vast network of freight brokers to help source truck capacity. Today, with the right electronic tool, tied into the right truck capacity network, ship-pers can make excellent logistics de-cisions in seconds, potentially sav-ing their companies thousands or even millions of dollars,” the com-pany added.

Expera Specialty Solutions – Going Above And BeyondExpera Specialty Solutions’ sustain-ability commitment known as SOAR states they “Go Above. Beyond. For a better earth.” Part of achieving this mission is to continuously educate their customers on natural product offerings. Natural Products are easy on the

environment yet hardworking in their intended applications. They of-fer a higher log-to-paper yield than bleached papers, and require much less energy and fewer chemicals to process while still maintaining a high level of performance integrity. “We ask our customers; is your

brown colored paper truly natu-ral?” explained Robyn Buss, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Expera Specialty Solutions. “Some producers use ‘dye-back bleached paper’ which can be easily confused with natural fiber. This is a process of adding brown dyes to bleached pulp, but this paper does not offer any of the natural paper’s additional sustainability benefits.” In Expera’s Food Packaging and Processing Papers sector, natural papers can make quite a statement to the consumer. These papers of-fering excellent printability, func-tionality and a sharp brand image,

which enable these eco packing op-tions to deliver in both the business and natural world. Expera is a leading North Ameri-can manufacturer of specialty paper products for use in the pressure-sen-sitive release liner, industrial, and food packaging segments. Head-quartered in Wisconsin, Expera em-ploys approximately 1,800 people across four Wisconsin manufactur-ing facilities located in Rhinelander, Mosinee, Kaukauna and De Pere. Paperboard Packaging Alliance Inspires the Next Generation of Packaging DesignersThe Paperboard Packaging Alli-ance’s (PPA) Student Design Chal-lenge was created to promote the use of paperboard as a preferred packaging material, and to engage and inspire future packaging de-signers. Top packaging, graphic and industrial design schools across North America participate in the challenge, which offers real life hands-on experience from concept to execution. PPA’s Student Design Challenge reflects what happens when a pa-perboard packaging company re-ceives a new project request. Par-ticipating student designers take their ideas from concept to product launch — from packaging develop-ment to packaging testing to devel-oping a targeted marketing plan. The annual challenge includes a special focus on sustainability and recyclability to reflect consumers’ increasing preference for these at-tributes in packaging. The 2016 challenge asks students to design an unconventional pre-mium package for dry goods food packaging. The judging panel of pa-perboard industry experts will look for a strong structural component that adds an innovative function to the package. Students can choose to design a package for cereal, cookies, crackers, pasta or rice. Judges will also look for unique features such as (but not limited to) opening, reclos-ing, dispensing and measurement. This year marks the 12th an-niversary of the Student Design Challenge. Since 2004, more than

$400,000 in scholarships and cash awards have been distributed to students at participating schools and award winners. Participating schools also receive the Paperboard Packaging Council’s Ideas & Innova-tions handbook to teach students the versatility of designing with pa-perboard. The challenge’s award-winning designs continue to reflect

the latest trends and practices in the paperboard packaging industry. To learn more about PPA’s Student Design Challenge, visit paperboardpackaging.org. PPA is a joint initiative of the American Forest & Paper Associa-tion and the Paperboard Packaging Council. The mission is to promote the benefits of paperboard packag-ing and products to influence prefer-ence for these materials in packaging design and selection. Universities that have participated in the PPA’s Student Design Challenge to date are California Polytechnic State Univer-sity, Clemson University, Fashion In-stitute of Technology, Indiana State University, Maryland Institute Col-lege of Arts, Michigan State Univer-sity, Millersville University, Mohawk College, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, Pratt Institute, Rochester Institute of Tech-nology, Ryerson University, San Jose State University, University of Cin-cinnati, University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Virginia Polytechnic and State University.

Participating student designers take their ideas from concept

to product launch—from packaging development to

packaging testing to developing a targeted marketing plan.

Increasing Paper Recovery for RecyclingAF&PA’s Recovered Fiber program helps ensure a growing domestic supply of recovered fiber to meet global demand, demonstrates indus-try leadership in a key sustainabil-ity area, and advocates for market-based recycling policies. AF&PA’s sustainability initiative, Better Prac-tices, Better Planet 2020, includes an industry goal to further increase pa-per recovery for recycling to exceed 70 percent by 2020. Each year since 2011, 63 percent or more of paper used in the U.S. has been recovered for recycling. In 2014 the paper re-covery rate exceeded 65 percent. AF&PA is engaging at many levels to support market-based policies and public education to increase paper recovery to meet future de-mand. Increasingly, our focus has included recovery of mill quality material in addition to volume of material, and identifying areas for growth of recovered materials. In the U.S., the paper grades with the greatest opportunity for increased recovery are printing-writing, corrugated containers and paperboard, especially consumer products packaging used in the home and in delivery of online shop-ping orders. AF&PA is also working with its members and other indus-try partners to explore additional opportunities to increase recovery of certain types of recyclable paper and paperboard, like food service packaging and multi-wall Kraft bags. In January, AF&PA convened a strategy session in Washington, D.C. that included AF&PA mem-bers and other major stakeholders in the paper recovery supply chain. Stakeholder participants included a private sector recycling company, a recycling ENGO and state govern-ment. This diverse group examined key issues driving paper recovery for recycling and proposed objectives and strategies for AF&PA to consider how to accelerate the paper recov-ery rate toward achieving the goal. AF&PA values partnership oppor-tunities with other organizations to achieve our paper recovery goals, like The Recycling Partnership. The Recycling Partnership is a nation-al recycling nonprofit that utilizes public-private partnerships to help budget-strapped local governments get the most out of the recycling pro-gram, which helps increase resident participation and tonnage collected. AF&PA works with The Recycling Partnership to help build the capac-ity of their partner communities’ re-cycling programs to increase paper recovery.

AF&PA will continue raising awareness about the importance of recycling, educating policymakers and other key stakeholders about the success of the voluntary fiber recovery infrastructure, and provid-ing tools and resources to help com-munities and businesses improve paper recycling programs. These ac-tions will help the industry achieve its 2020 goal of exceeding 70 percent paper recovery.
