#48 Content Writing Assignment
• Combination of 2 or more substances that are NOT chemically combined
• Each substance in a mixture keeps its identity bc the components do not react with each other• EX: pizza –mix of pepperoni, bread,
cheese, sauce• EX: koolaid – sugar, flavor mix,
water• EX: air in our atmosphere –
oxygen, carbon dioxide, ect
• appears to be a single substance because particles are evenly distributed (HOMOgeneous mixture)• DISSOLVING is the process where substances
spread out evenly in a mixture• Particles so small they do NOT scatter light
• The SOLUTE is the substance that gets dissolved• It must be soluble – able to dissolve
• The SOLVENT is the substance that does the dissolving• The substance present in the largest
amount is the solvent• EX: salt water – salt is the solute and water is
the solvent• CONCENTRATION - measure of the amount of
solute in a solvent (expressed in g/mL)• If a substance does not have a lot of
solute it is called DILUTE• SOLUBILITY is the ability of a substance to
dissolve at a certain temperature
Solution: Koolaid Solute: powder and sugarSolvent: water
Solution:Salt WaterSolute: saltSolvent: water
Solution: Steel Alloy (carbon and iron)Solute: carbonSolvent: iron
Solution: AtmosphereSolute: carbon, oxygen,ectSolvent: nitrogen
Solution: Coca-ColaSolute: carbon dioxide, flavoringSolvent: water
• Mixture with particles that do not separate, but are large enough to scatter light
• EX: milk, smog, muddy water
• Mixture with particles large enough that they separate
• Suspensions scatter light• Called HETEROgeneous bc the
particles are not the same • EX: italian dressing, snow globe
Snow Globe
Chicken Noodle Soup
Italian Dressing
Milk
Muddy Water
Smog
Suspensions and Colloids Scatter Light
Content Writing Assignment
• We want to improve your writing!!!• Topic sentence: what is a mixture: • 4 supporting details in paragraph– Three types of mixtures and what the difference is– An example of a solution you found– What is the solvent in your solution and how you
know– What is the solute in your solution and how do you
know (might be more than 1 solute)• Conclusion sentence – summary sentence

Complete #50
#49 M&M Observations:Melts in your mouth not in your hand: how to speed up dissolving
1. Place one m&m in your mouth, do not move your tongue or chew it time how long it takes for it to dissolve. Record
2. Place another m&m in your mouth you may move your tongue, time how long it takes to dissolve. Record
3. Place a 3rd m&m in your mouth you may chew and move your tongue, time how long it takes to dissolve. Record
4. What was the solute and the solvent in your solution?
5. What was the difference in times for dissolving the chocolate?
6. Using this information, What could you do to a solution that would make the solute dissolve faster?

Content Writing Assignment
You may:• Work on your paragraph• Meet with your writing group• Discuss with Stein & McDonald• Edit your paragraph
Wednesday September 28Warm Up
How could a sugar cube be dissolved more quickly in water?
a. cool the waterb. crush the cubec. heat the waterd. stir the water
Classwork: Solve Ms. Steins Dilemma
#51 Graphic Organizer: Separating Mixtures
Homework:
#52 Describe a procedure to separate a mixture of salt, ground pepper, and
pebblesTest Next Tuesday Oct 4
Ms Stein’s Dilemma
Ahhhh I need to separate these mixtures…..
Distillation – uses boiling points of the two substances to separate themEX: boil a saltwater mixture to separate the water as steam and leave only salt
Centrifuge – separates mixtures based on their densities
Magnet – use a magnet to remove magnetic substances from non-magnetic onesEX: iron fillings mixture
You can filter two substances that have different propertiesEX: sand and water, coffee and grounds
How do we
separate mixtures?
Boiling PointDensity
Magnetism
Filtering
Thursday September 29Warm Up
What forms when particles of two or more substances are evenly mixed?
a. compoundb. suspensionc. solutiond. element
Classwork: #54 Legos of Matter
Activity#55 Legos of Matter Activity COntinued
Homework:
Matter
Pure Substances –
there is only 1 type of thing…
Mixtures – 2 or more things NOT
chemically combined
Element- pure substance that
can not ne broken down
by chemical or physical means
Compound – Chemical
combination of atoms from 2
different elements
*in a specific ratio
#53 Classify Matter using Legos:
See Ya Bye… but firstAn element is to a compound as bricks are
to a house. Describe why this analogy makes sense. Can
you come up with your own?
T.O.D – Create your own analogy relating elements, compounds or mixtures
Friday September 30Warm Up
Which of the following correctly describes a compound?
a. the atoms are combined in a specific ratiob. it has a positive chargec. it keeps the properties from the original elementsd. it is a physical combination of atoms
Classwork:
Stellar Science Demonstration
Homework:
Thank You Mr. Jackson
• Write a Thank You card to Mr. Jackson for coming to show us his EPIC demonstrations
You must include 4 sentences that tell: • which experiment you liked the best• How it relates to science content we have
been discussing • Your content will be graded, due Monday!
