Why are we here? It is a nice June week when all of us could be doing anything other than work that resembles a classroom setting. We have just finished school, and now we rightfully want a break. If it is true that we could be anywhere else right now, then why should 1200 juniors all across the state of Ohio came to the little college town of Bowling Green? From the very first meeting all of us had with American Legion members, the same phrase kept being repeated to describe the week, A week to shape a lifetime. We all come from very different backgrounds. Thus, asking the question Why are you here? brought up many different responses. Jared Hochwalt in Abele City is here because he wanted to get a feeling for life after college, and to become more mature. Joseph Poiry, also of Abele is here be-

cause he feels that it is a good program and will look good on a resume or application. Derek Burk, also of Abele is here because his brother went through the program and enjoyed it; so, Derek thought that he would enjoy himself as well. The 1200 delegates will have 1200 different answers to that simple question. According to consultant Dan Willis, Buckeye Boys State is about all of that listed above. When the delegates are placed in an unusual setting when

they apply themselves they do far more than they ever expected. The program is so successful because everyone gets something slightly differ-ent out of it. So the time has come to get to work! Creating a whole government in one week may seem challenging, but with our counselors it will be a breeze! No matter why we have come, we will all leave being very distinguished members of society. Lets all have a great week to shape a lifetime!

The beginning of 2015 American Legion Buck-eye Boys State ended with an extensive assembly that demonstrated what Boys State is all about. Delegates were welcomed enthusiastically and got a first taste of Boys State and its American values. The assembly was highlight-ed by speeches from Bowling Green State University Presi-dent Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey, City of Bowling Green Mayor Dick Edwards, Buckeye Boys State President Paul Wiehe, State Senator Randy Gardner, and Ohio American Legion

State Commander David Hill-iard. Since Sunday, June 14, was Flag Day, Carmen Scott delivered a special speech about respect for the American flag and what the flag stands for. The speeches reminded the delegates of how privileged we are. Few have the op-portunity to attend Buckeye Boys State and learn about leadership from some of the greatest leaders in our coun-try at a fantastic and gener-ous university. Few have the privilege of living in the U.S. and experiencing freedom that is only a dream in many parts of the world. However, it is our duty to take the responsibilities with the privileges. Although we consider voting a right, to many it is a privilege or even a wish. Therefore it is our responsibility to participate in the democratic process. Our freedom is a privilege gained by those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Therefore, it is our responsibility to pro-tect our freedom and to show respect for those who have served.
