Nametag Sunday

September 12-13

Next weekend we ask that you stop by the Mulligan Rooms to make a nametag for

yourself prior to Mass. Once you are seated in church, please greet the people next to you by name and as Mass begins,

offer a prayer for God’s grace and blessing upon them.

Thoughts From Fr. Tom In the story we hear from Mark’s Gospel this week, Jesus continues to be on the move as he makes his way into the district of the Decapolis. This location is significant because Jesus is moving out of Jewish territory into Gentile territory. This signals that Jesus’ ministry is being extended to Gentiles as well as Jews. All are in need of God’s healing so Jesus shows this in a very real way as he cures the deaf man with the speech impediment in Gentile land. As Jesus brings healing to the man, he utters the word Ephphatha!, which means, Be opened! Jesus is providing the man an opening to return to the community through the healing. Jesus is also inviting the crowd to be open to the healing that comes through following him. As we hear these words, we are called to be open to all that Christ shares with us through our faith. What are we being invited to “be open” to in our lives? As we gather on this Labor Day weekend, we remember that God has given each of us unique gifts and talents and we are called to use them in ways that bring meaning and purpose to our lives, serve the needs of our families and others, and build up God’s king-dom. Through our faith, we are all laborers for the har-vest and the work of our hands is blessed by God. May our labors always bear the goodness of God. And let us keep in prayer those who are unemployed, underem-ployed, or who do not have access to sufficient work to provide for their families and themselves. As part of our Visioning process last year, I expressed a desire to begin a Parish Pastoral Council. This group will focus on visioning and direction-setting for the parish. I have asked 12 members of our parish community to serve on the Council. We are planning to have our first meeting this month. Please keep this new leadership group in your prayers. You will be hearing more about the members of this group and their activi-ties in the coming weeks. Next weekend is Nametag Sunday. This has become a fun and practical way to build community and get to know each other a little better. We invite you to join in the fun by filling out a nametag as you come to Mass next weekend. Please make an effort to learn the names of at least a couple of people that you may either see every week or who may be new to you. The key is to have a smile on your face and just have fun with it! Please support the youth in our parish who will be attending the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in Indianapolis in November. Through the “Stock in Youth” program you heard about this week-end, you can make a donation and invest in the faith life of our youth. Many Blessings!

STEWARDSHIP

The good steward must not show favoritism. The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading that God has chosen the world’s poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God’s kingdom. - Stewardship by the Book

Our parish youth served 10 charities in Chicago in July A Youth Summer Mission Trip Reflection

By Andy M. Everywhere I went, every organization I visited, I saw people making the best of their situation or people who dedicated their lives to helping others with moxie and graciousness. Wherever a vase is smashed, there are four or five people to pick up the pieces. I look around and I see people who deserve a lot more than they get, from the impoverished and disenfranchised to even the people that serve them. I don’t see leeches or sponges or bums like television news would have

you believe, along with millionaires who know nothing of wanting for something, let alone the countless people in poverty. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to support people who have next to nothing, and I wish it was more popular to do so, so maybe our poor can finally have what they, as people, need and deserve.

SCHOOL NEWS

ECC NEWS

OLP’s 5th graders spent some me the first week of the school year par cipa ng in a team building day. The goal was to prac ce coopera on and group par cipa on, while having lots of fun! Students were put into groups and given several items that they had to use to get from a start point to an end point – the catch was, they couldn’t touch the grass! If anyone from their team touched the grass, everyone had to start over and give up one of their items. The students really worked hard together trying to be the first team to finish. The day wrapped up with a sweet treat and some photo booth fun. It was a great start to the 5th grade year!

As we begin our first full month of school we look ahead to lots of fun activities. We will use this first month to continue learn-ing about our School Family and introducing new concepts in our classrooms. We’ve had our first visitors to the center when Fr. Tom and Fr. Andrés stopped by to give our students and teachers a special blessing to start the school year. Our center

will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. We have a few part-time spots still available for this school year. If you would like to take a tour of our facility or have questions about

our program give us a call at 251-1140.
