For more than two decades, theproof issue of the Australian

Nugget wassynonymous with

rarity, appeal, innovation andcollectability. Themagnificent 2011-dated releasemaintains these traditionsby recreating the original

gold nugget design, createdby Stuart Devlin OA CMG

and commissioned by The PerthMint in 1986.

The design references the ‘WelcomeStranger’ nugget, believed to be the biggest

recorded gold nugget ever found. It weighed 2,284 ounces and was found in1869, in Moliagul, Victoria. Prospectors, John Deason and Richard Oates, originally from Cornwall, England, found the nugget only 2 inches (7.5centimetres) below the surface, near the root of a tree.

The 25th Anniversary of Australia’s Official Gold Coin Program 1oz GoldProof Coin is presented in a prestigious presentation case with timber lid andcoloured shipper. Only 1,500 coins will be issued.

The Parthian Empire ruled ancient Persia from around 247BC to AD228. They defeated Alexander the Great’s successors, theSeleucids, conquering most of the middle east and southwest asia. The empire reached its apogee during the reign of MithridatesII 123-88BC and it was during his reign that the legendary trade route known as the silk road was established. From the firstcentury BC struggles against the Roman Empire and nomads weakened the Parthians and the empire finally fractured in thethird century AD. We offer an interesting selection of ancient Parthian coins.

Along with the bounding kangaroo on the Halfpenny andPenny, the Ram’s Head reverse design from the

silver predecimal shilling could beconsidered Australia’s most iconic coin

design.

The design was used from 1938 untilthe last issue in 1963. The originaldesign was modelled on a grandchampion Merino from the annual

Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ramwas considered to be unmatched in the

position of its head and horns. Named Uardry0.1 after its home station, it became known as the

‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing woolindustry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance

on primary industry through its economic history.

The Royal Australia Mint’s Silver Proof $1 for 2011 features this classic design as it appeared on the shilling. The coin ispresented in a plush case with coloured outer box featuring a candy striped theme reminiscent of the shearer’s clothing featuredin the famous 1890 Tom Roberts painting ‘Shearing the Rams’. Only 12,500 coins will be struck.

It was almost a century ago that a group of Australian coins were hidden awayin a tin. These coins included a range of early Australian Silver - those issuedin the first ten or twelve years of production. The cache was discovered acouple of year ago and found to contain a selection of high grade pieces

prompting the discoverers to label it the “1921 Hoard” after the youngestcoins in the hoard. Not surprisingly the most recent coins were typically the

highest grade having been in circulation for little or no time. We have selectedthe finest 1921 Threepences and Sixpences from the hoard to offer to MoneyMatters readers at well below catalogue value.
