The Price of Silverhas been boucing around over the last few months. The generaltrend has been downwards from the brief highs of April 2011.

The Perth Mint’s decision todramatically increase issue prices inMay, rather than wait to see howsilver performed for a few months, was met with disbelief in our office. The Perth Mint has now decided to

decrease prices in line with the current price of silver. So youwill see some recent issues actually priced at less than lastmonth. We apologise for the confusion this has caused.

1915 Sinking of theLusitania Replica Medal

RMS Lusitania entered service with the CunardLine on 26 August 1907. Lusitania wasconstructed as part of the competition betweenthe Cunard Line and other shipping lines, principally from Germany, for the trans-Atlantic passenger trade. Whichevercompany had the fastest and most luxuriousships had a commercial advantage:However, the outbreak of World War I

changed everything. On 4 February 1915Germany declared theseas around the British Islesa war zone: from 18 Februaryallied ships in the area wouldbe sunk without warning.

On 17 April 1915Lusitania left Liverpoolon her 201sttransatlantic voyage, arriving in New York on24 April. A group ofGerman-Americans,hoping to avoid controversyif Lusitania were attacked by aU-boat, discussed their concernswith a representative of the Germanembassy. The embassy decided to warnpassengers before her next crossing not

to sail aboardLusitania. TheImperial Germanembassy placed awarningadvertisement in 50Americannewspapers,including those inNew York. Lusitania departed New York for the home leg on 1May. By 6 May she was less than 20 kilometres from Irelandwhen she was sighted and targeted by the German U-boat U-20.The torpedo hit the starboard side just behind the bridge. Twoexplosions occured and the Lusitania immediately listed tostarboard and the bow submerged. She sank in 18 minutes taking

1,198 of the 1,959 people on board to their graves. In August 1915, Munich medalist and sculptor Karl X.

Goetz privately struck a small run of medals as alimited-circulation satirical attack on the CunardLine for trying to continue business as usualduring wartime. Goetz blamed both the Britishgovernment and the Cunard Line for allowing theLusitania to sail despite the German embassy'swarnings.

One side of the medal showed the Lusitania sinkingladen with guns (incorrectly depicted sinking stern

first) with the motto "KEINE BANNWARE!" ("NOCONTRABAND!"), while the reverse showed a

skeleton selling Cunard tickets with the motto"Geschäft Über Alles" ("Business Above All").

Goetz had put an incorrect date for thesinking on the medal, an error he laterblamed on a mistake in a newspaper storyabout the sinking: instead of 7 May, hehad put "5. Mai", two days before theactual sinking.

The British Foreign Office obtained a copyof the medal, photographed it, and sent copies

to the United States where it was published inthe New York Times on 5 May 1916. Many popular

magazines ran photographs of the medal, and it was falselyclaimed that it had been awarded to the crew of the U-boat.

The Goetz medal attracted so much attention that LordNewton, who was in charge of Propaganda at theForeign Office in 1916, decided to exploit the anti-German feelings aroused by it for propaganda purposesand asked department store entrepreneur Harry GordonSelfridge to reproduce the medal. The replica medalswere produced in an attractive case claiming to be anexact copy of the German medal, and were sold for ashilling apiece. On the cases it was stated that themedals had been distributed in Germany "tocommemorate the sinking of the Lusitania" and theycame with a propaganda leaflet which stronglydenounced the Germans and used the medal's incorrect

date to claim that the sinking of the Lusitania was premeditated.

We offer true to the original modern replicas of the Lusitaniamedal. Each is accompanied by a copy of the propaganda leaflet.

In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip brought 751 convicts and 252 marines and their families to proclaima new British colony in New South Wales. Convicts transported toAustralia provided skilled labour for the development of thenew colony - many were able farmers, shepherds brick-makers, carpenters, nurses, servants and cattlemen. Rare 1981 3 1/2 Claw 20 CentsIn 1981, due to an industrial dispute at the RoyalAustralian Mint, theCanadian andBritish Mints werecontracted toproduce coins tomeet our circulatingcurrency needs. Thecoins from theCanadian Mint have adifferent finish to thoseproduced in Canberra. Butthe most interesting featureexist on a small number of 1981Canadian Mint 20 cents. In 1966, to secretly

distinguish coins from the London Mint, small adjustments weremade to the coin designs. To the untrained eye the changes weredifficult to detect, but to those who knew where to look theywere quite obvious. In 1981, after a break of 15 years, thispractice was also used on a small number of the Canadian-minted

20 cents coins. On the left claw of the Platypus, the inner-mostclaw was substantiallyshortened, prompting thename “3 1/2 Claw Variety”.(See McDonald 15thEdition page 119). Thisvariety was not discovered

for quite a few yearsand today it is a veryscarce item. McDonaldcatalogue value isUNC $170.00!

The discovery of Gold in Australia in the 1850's createdthe need for more coinage. In 1855 the Sydney Mintwas established as a branch of the Royal Mint andproduction of the first official Australian gold coinscommenced. Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns werestruck featuring an unique Australian design. Sovereigns were struck in large quantities as theywere also a common international trade coin, but thesmaller Half Sovereign was struck in very small numbersto facilitate local trade. In 1855, the first year of issue forthe Sydney Mint, 502,000 Sovereigns were struckfrom the newly discovered gold. However, only21,000 Half Sovereigns were struck. This was to bethe lowest mintage of any circulating HalfSovereign. Then in 1857 the portrait design ofVictoria was changed meaning this coin type wasonly issued for two years.

Today, the 1855 Half Sovereign is considered Australia'sRarest Circulating coin. It is many times rarer than

the 1930 Penny and being the first Australian Goldcoin is considerably more important. Over the 21years I have been in business I have only handledabout 6 examples. This is one of the nicest as this

coin is almost always seen extremely worn and oftendamaged. This is a really pleasing example with some

detail in the hair.Such is the rarity of this coin that no example is known

in Uncirculated condition. In EF condition the coincatalogues at $250,000.00. This coin is certainly notEF but it does grade gVG. In VG the coincatalogues at $28,000.00 and in Fine $65,000.00.This example is in between.

Silver Coins of theRoman Republic

The period from the overthrow of the Romanmonarchy, c.509BC until the rise of Augustusin 27BC is known as the Roman Republic.

The Roman Republic was governed bya complex constitution, whichcentered on the principles of aseparation of powers and checks and

balances. The evolution of theconstitution was heavilyinfluenced by the struggle

between thearistocracy, or

the patricians,and othertalented

Romans whowere not from

famous families, theplebeians.

During the first twocenturies, the Republic saw its

territory expand from centralItaly to the entire Mediterranean

world. In the next century, Romegrew to dominate North Africa, the

Iberian Peninsula, Greece, and what isnow southern France. During the lasttwo centuries of the RomanRepublic, it grew to dominate the

rest of modern France, as well as much

of the east. At this point, the republican political machinerywas replaced with imperialism.

The major coin of the Roman Republic was the silverDenarius. Initially the designs were decided by "the three menresponsible for casting and striking bronze, silver and gold"or the tresviri monetales, also sometimes referred to as themint magistrates. The trio was composed of young statesmenaspiring for political office. Production was carried out bymoneyers, rather than a government mint. Early designstypically showed the goddess Roman with a chariot on thereverse.

However, as time went on, the moneyers often chose tofeature designs proclaiming the successes of their family, bothpolitical and military. Self-promoting imagery on coins waspart of the increasing competition amongst the ruling class inthe Roman Republic.

This issue we offer original silver Denarii of the RomanRepublic dating from 150-50BC. All are fully identified anddescribed and grade Fine or better. They represent remarkablebuying at our prices.

Hadrian in Egypt AD117-138The Roman province of Egypt (Aegyptus) was established in30 BC after Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) defeatedhis rival Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VIIand annexed the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt to the RomanEmpire. The province encompassed most of modern-dayEgypt except for the Sinai Peninsula (which would later beconquered by Trajan). Aegyptus was bordered by theprovinces of Creta et Cyrenaica to the West and Judaea (laterArabia Petraea) to the East. Egypt would come to serve as amajor producer of grain for the empire. As a province, Aegyptus was ruled by a prefect instead of thetraditional senatorial governor of other Roman provinces. Theprefect was a man of equestrian rank and was appointed bythe Emperor.

The emperor Hadrian twice visited Egyptus. On his secondvisit his entourage included a Bithynian Greek youth,Antinous, with whom Hadrian was close. In October 130,whilst sailing on the Nile, Antinous drowned for unknownreasons; accident, suicide, murder or religious sacrifice haveall been postulated. The emperor was grief stricken. Hadrianordered Antinous deified, and cities were named after the boy, medals struck with his effigy, and statues erected to him in allparts of the empire. Temples were built for his worship inBithynia, Mantineia in Arcadia. The city of Antinopolis wasfounded on the ruins of Besa, where he died.Throughout his reign Hadrian struck an interesting series ofcoins at Alexandria in Egypt. We offer an interesting selectionof these historic pieces.

1937 Edward VIIIPattern Pair

Upon the death of King George V in 1936 His son Edwardwas first in line for the British throne. Edward was madly in

love with an American - Wallis Simpson. The problem wasthat Simpson was a divorcee (which meant she could not be

Queen of England) and Edward was faced with a terrible decision - tomarry the woman he loved or to be crowned King. Love prevailed and Edward abdicated.

No coins were issued featuring Edward’s portrait but over the years a number of what-ifPatterns have been issued. This Pair of Australian Sterling Silver Threepence andSixpence were produced about twenty years ago.

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 gold proof ‘C’ mintmark isthe same that graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963. The

original design was modeled on a grand champion Merino from the annualSydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered tobe unmatched in the position of its head andhorns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station,it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ andrepresented Australia’s growing wool industry.

The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’sreliance on primary industry through its economic history.

The Grand Duchy of Avram is a micronationfounded in the early 1980s by Tasmanian

John Charlton Rudge (who sources alsoalternately name John Avram and JohnCharlton His Grace the Most Noble theDuke of Avram), an anti-taxation

campaigner and hermetic kabbalahadherent. He is generally known as the"Grand Duke of Avram". The most publicearly manifestation of the Duchy was abank which initially operated from retail

premises owned by Rudge in the townof George Town, and which issued itsown banknotes and coinage. Thisenterprise was later relocated to

Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast.Customers were required to exchangeAustralian currency for the Avramequivalents in order to transact businessin Rudge's store. In an attempt to

circumvent Australian banking statutesRudge did not trade as

a bank, but insteadreferred to theoperation as a b_nk.The unlicensednature of the Avram

"b_nk" roused the ire

of the Australian government, who promptlyconfiscated Avram's entire currency reservesand initiated proceedings against him in theAustralian Federal Court system.Eventually, after a total of six court cases, costing the federal government some AUD$22 million, the courts ruled thatRudge had not engaged in any illegalactivity, and he was permitted toresume his banking practicesunhindered. He has issued several setsof coins and banknotes in the name ofthe Royal Bank of Avram since the1980s of which we offer the only twowe have seen. The Royal Bank of Avramtrades in US$ and these setsare somewhat more whenpurchased direct.
