Contact your card issuer immediately if you inadvertently insert a card into a suspicious ATM. Know your daily balance for checking and savings accounts. Even better, sign up for mobile card controls and alerts that notify you of transactions – with the option to block those you don’t recognize. Check your own credit. Identity thieves are hard at work opening accounts in the names of innocent consumers – don’t let this be you. Every consumer in Canada is entitled to receive a copy of his or her credit report once a year. Here is a link to get you started: www.consumer.equifax.ca Read the fine print. Before submitting payment information or even clicking links, double check all URLs and e-mail addresses. Make sure there are no extra commas or other unusual characters. Fraudsters are masters at impersonating brands and individuals. Run frequent virus scans on all home PCs and Android devices as well. The Turtleford Credit Union will be collecting gently used or new jackets, mitts, toques and toys for children in need until December 5th. All items will be dispersed locally Mid-December. Drop all items off at the Turtleford Credit Union. DON’T: Just download apps from anywhere. There are many unlicensed banking apps out there, and many popular smartphone apps today that appear harmless – but that contain risky code. If you need to access mobile banking, get the app from your credit union’s website – not Snapchat. Believe everything you hear or read. Fraudsters love to catch people when their resistance is down and frequently attach a sense of urgency to their requests. If someone calls or texts you ‘with a very important message from your card issuer,’ don’t pick up and don’t respond. Place a separate call to your card issuer to assess the situation. Talk to unknown callers. If you don’t recognize the phone number on the other end of the line, don’t answer. Fraudsters are aggressive, and there are many tools out there they can use to synthesize human voice now. Don’t give away a sample of yours. Store card numbers on merchant sites you don’t frequent for future use. A breach on any site can send your card data straight to the dark web. Use Visa Checkout and Masterpass instead to protect sensitive card data, and always look for that little lock in your browser window to ensure that a webpage is secure. BOTTOM LINE: Follow our SEA approach for smooth sailing Slow down! If a caller or texting party unknown to you is urgently requesting your card or personal data, hang up or ignore the text until you can evaluate the situation. Evaluate: Do your own fact finding regarding calls and e-mails to determine why anyone needs your social security number, date of birth or PIN. Chances are, no one needs this information except a criminal. Act: Notify your credit union immediately if you think you have encountered a fraudster. Mitch was part of our credit union organization since 2008 and over those years has proven to see the Turtleford Credit Union grow significantly and thrive in our community. We wish Mitch all the best in the next stage in his life. Join us in congratulating Ian Heggstrom on accepting his new position as General Manager. Ian was born and raised in Turtleford, and has been in the Credit Union system since 1994, serving that time exclusively with our organization. Ian served as our Loans Manager for the last ten years, and with his intimate knowledge of our community and organization, it was utmost deserving for him to accept the challenge and endure his new office. Ian, his wife Jen and their two daughters have made their home in Turtleford. The Lending Department at TCU welcomed some restructuring to the personnel as well. Lender, Julie Levasseur now primarily administers commercial and agriculture lending as well as provides supervision to our lending team. Previous to her start here, Mel specialized in lending, both Agriculture and Commercial for another Financial Institution and most recently as a Controller at a vehicle dealership. Being born and raised in Turtleford, Mel looks forward to reacquainting and meeting our members in Turtleford and the surrounding communities. • Pre-Order foreign currency with the Turtleford Credit Union. We ask that you pre-order at least 3 weeks before you leave to satisfy the certain denominations you are in search of.

• Notify the Turtleford Credit Union of your travel plans. The information we need is the travel dates, location of destination and intended card use (Debit Card or Global Payments Mastercard) and card numbers. With the provided information we forward it to our card support and

from there processing transactions should be hassle-free.

• Phone CUETS in regards to your Credit Union Mastercard to arrange notification of your travel plans. The phone number is on the back of your Credit Union Mastercard. It’s a great opportunity to inquire about out of country travel insurance through CUETS at that time.

• Sign up for Turtleford Credit Union Internet Bank Alerts. Stay informed and up-to-date-on your account details by email, text message

through wifi or both if you choose. Examples of notifications are when deposits exceed a certain amount, withdrawals exceeding a certain amount, when your personal access code is changed, when an Interac e-Transfer recipient is added to your online banking account and so much more.

Checklist for planning a winter vacation

The Turtleford Credit Union and The Turtleford Co-op partnered up to host another Community Partnership Event in October to celebrate Co-op Week and Credit Union Day. This years proceeds raised were donated to the kick-off of the Turtleford Spray & Play, a Spray Water Park for locals and visitors passing through to enjoy. A delicious supper was served by TADRA catering. The entertainment for the evening started with an outstanding 15 year old local artist, Abby Ellis, singing and performing on the piano, guitar and ukulele. Following her talented performance, ‘Safire’ a

variety Circus Show with a ‘Cirque du Soleil’ type performance with fire entertained the young and old. It was a great evening of entertainment for all to enjoy! Throughout the evening a silent auction was on display for guests to partake in. An informative presentation of the plans for the Turtleford Spray & Play was given by Executive, Carmen Gervais and Kari Bauldic as well they were appreciative to receive a $1000 donation from the Turtleford Credit Union and the Turtleford Co-op to kick off their fundraising efforts. Thank you to the local firefighters for working the bar for the event.
