Thank you to Ms Tonia Burridge and Mrs Cassie Ward for leading the celebration of both the Visual and Performing Arts. The Arts Show on Monday evening was a spectacular extravaganza. From the animal magic in the Prep classes, to the Koi ponds and fabulous frogs in 1/2, to the city scapes and Modigliani portraits in 3/4 and finally to the delicious mouthwatering ice cream sculptures and student portraits surrounded by POP Art. It certainly was a feast for the eyes! The finale performance of the school choir was sensational and was certainly enjoyed by the full house audience. Thank you to everyone who made our Arts Show so successful. Another sensational performance by the school choir at Keilor Downs Central was enjoyed by Monmia families and other shoppers. MONMIA MESSENGER

Dear Monmia Families, WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE THIS WEEK Congratulations to all four teams that played valiantly last Friday in the Semi Finals. Our School Choir opened Education Week with their wonderful singing- a small taste of what

was to come at the Arts Show. Thank you to Ms Tonia Burridge and Mrs Cassie Ward for leading the celebration of both the

Visual and Performing Arts. Thank you to all the staff for their support of our students in producing such amazing art pieces.

It was lovely to see so many parents/guardians and grandparents visiting classrooms over the last few days. I hope you all enjoy seeing what children are learning every day at Monmia.

One woman complimented Mrs Ward on the choir’s singing. She said that she was drawn to the choir by the heavenly voices she could hear from the other end of the shopping centre!

Lovely to see Mr Squires visit for the Arts Show. He is enjoying his new role and settling in

very well as Assistant Principal. CAKE & COFFEE WITH OUR PC (PRINCIPAL CLASS) We are reintroducing our informal conversation sessions with parents/guardians. WHO WILL DO MATHLETICS AT ASSEMBLY? Many families are wondering about the replacement of Mr Dean Squires. At this point in time the Leadership Team are looking at possible solutions to the many responsibilities that Dean had in the school, especially as Numeracy Coach. We will share our decisions in next week’s newsletter. DID YOU KNOW? This is from an article I came across from the Twittersphere written by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD. The whole article is a great read and you can google the title. I thought these points would be helpful to our families. I especially liked “focusing on the solution”. These dot points fit in well with our Restorative Practices. Learning from Mistakes: Ten Parenting Guidelines that Foster Positive Youth Devel-opment Acknowledge that you don’t expect them to be perfect.

Let them know your love is unconditional, regardless of their mistakes or lapses in judgment.

Don’t rescue children from their mistakes. Instead, focus on the solution.

Provide examples of your own mistakes, the consequences, and how you learned from them.

Encourage them to take responsibility for their mistakes and not blame others.

Avoid pointing out their past mistakes. Instead, focus on the one at hand.

Praise them for their ability to admit their mistakes.

Praise them for their efforts and courage to overcome setbacks.

Mentor them on how to apologize when their mistakes have hurt others.

Help them look at the good side of getting things wrong!

ARE FIDGET SPINNERS TRULY HELPFUL FOR CHILDREN? I have seen many fads come and go as an educator of over 40 years in the Education De-partment. I would love to see the research behind this one. These toys may help some individual children however in my opinion, they certainly don’t help all children. Teachers have different techniques and strategies for assisting students to remain engaged on their learning. The current hype around these is trying to say that fidget spinners help students remain focused. What we are finding as educators is that they are a distraction to the indi-vidual child as well as all the other students in the room. I would like to see the evidence that these are truly doing what they say they can do. Therefore, we are asking parents/guardians and students to not bring these to school at all. As some are quite expensive, we do not want children to use them outside at morning and lunch recess in case of breakage or loss. Please help by supporting us in this request.

THE FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK IS:

Values that underpin Bounce Back! TYPES OF BULLYING?

SPOTLIGHT ON BOUNCE BACK A WELLBEING AND RESILIENCE PROGRAM

Dear Parents and Guardians, It is important to know what bullying is and what it is not. Monmia has NO TOLERANCE on Bullying. In fact our slogan is ‘BULLYING…NO WAY! Last week we looked at the definition of Bullying and noticed that there are four main points:

It has to be deliberate

It has to happen more than once

It can involve one person or a group of people

There is an imbalance of power in incidents of bullying This week I would like to explore each of the types of Bullying in greater detail. 1. Direct physical bullying

hitting, tripping, pushing someone

hiding or damaging someone’s property, drawing on someone’s work

forcing someone to hand over their belongings 2. Direct verbal bullying

name calling, insults, ‘put down’ comments

making racist remarks

disguising an insult by saying “It was only a joke” 3. Indirect bullying – this form of bullying is harder to recognise and often carried out behind

the bullied student’s back. It is designed to harm someone’s social reputation and/or cause humiliation. Indirect bullying includes:

lying and spreading rumours

playing nasty jokes to embarrass and humiliate

mimicking

encouraging others to socially exclude someone

damaging someone’s social reputation and social acceptance

cyber-bullying, which involves the use of electronic means to humiliate and distress 4. Cyber-bullying, which involves the use of technologies such as the use of email,

text messages, chat rooms, Facebook or Twitter to humiliate and distress a person. It can be verbal (over the telephone or mobile phone), or written (threats, racial comments) or graphic (sending photos, attaching images to statements).

Family Activity As a family discuss that none of these forms of bullying is acceptable. Create a BULLYING…NO WAY poster. I would love to put some of the posters made at home around the school. I hope you find the articles interesting and useful. Warm Regards, Lucy Vorpasso

Student Engagement and Wellbeing

Introducing… Dear Parents and Guardians,

Monmia is a Bucket Filling School! We fill buckets and we don’t dip!

We use our lid to keep our bucket full and keep the drops in! I love how the Bucket Fillers Philosophy has been embraced by our school community this year. I know that we can keep filling other people’s buckets and make Monmia Primary School a warm, positive and caring place to be. When we all fill other people’s buckets then all community members benefit from these acts of kindness. There is so much to acknowledge at Monmia Primary School! Here are some ‘drops’ for you to read.

Remember that when you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill yours as well so keep filling buckets Monmia! Happy Bucket Filling!

Kind Regards,

Lucy Vorpasso

Assistant Principal - Student Engagement and Wellbeing

The following students have been awarded a Visual Arts Encouragement Award. Education Support Officers Emmy and Leanne thoroughly enjoyed viewing and selecting student work across all year levels that stood out to them in terms of technical ability, character, and creativity. They said the quality of student work was outstanding, therefore, it was a challenging task to select just 14 artworks. These awards will be presented at assembly on Monday morning.
