42 Garage Style Magazine Summer 2010 Monterey guide CAR SHOWS, CLASSIC CAR AUCTIONS, VINTAGE RACES AND AUTOMOBILIA EVENTS Last year brought sunny days and wonderful afternoon breezes to the Monterey Peninsula, perfect conditions for visiting one or all of the unique car events that take place each August during the famed Monterey Car Week. A few new changes this year mean there is now more than one full week of public events to enjoy. ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION There have been some major changes at Mazda Raceway (Laguna Seca Raceway). For years, General Racing delivered the Monterey Historic Races during the Pebble Beach Concours weekend attracting tens of thousands of spectators who love beautiful vintage and exotic cars but like them even more when they are in motion racing full-throttle around the curves of a race track. For the first time, SCRAMP is handling the racing component of the weekend and Rolex is still strongly supporting the weekend effort resulting in the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. In response to enthusiasts who want to see more action on the track, the program has been expanded to 19 classes and a second day of practice has been added on Thursday giving fans four full days of racing action. In Celebration of the 55th Anniversary of his first race, «Dan Gurney, the cars he raced-the cars he built» is this years race theme. Besides numerous Eagles, Dan Gurney's Cobra Daytona Coupe which he raced in the 1965 LeMans will be competing as will his 1960 Maserati Birdcage. It was this Camoradi race car that Stirling Moss, Carroll Shelby and Gurney all won races in. Traditionally, the weekend prior to the «historic races» has been known as the «pre-historics», a private invitation-only event. This year, SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Associate of the Monterey Peninsula) opens up 2010 Monterey Car Week Overview this event to the general public, now stretching the public event offerings over 10 days. Vintage Race Cars hit the track on Friday for qualifying. Races are held throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Event Hours: At the time of print, hours are still being determined for Friday, August 13 through Sunday, August 15, 2010. Please check the event website Event Location: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California Event Web Site: www.mazdaraceway.com (805) 686-9292. EDITOR’S NOTE – While you’re at the races, make sure to visit Slot Mods to see their incredible, hand-built slot car track that actually incorporates the Mazda Raceway Corkscrew into the design. Learn more on page 67, or visit www.slotmods.com THE CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA CONCOURS ON THE AVENUE This has quickly become one of the most popular events of the Monterey Car Week. Staged over 18 avenues of downtown Carmel, the Concours is free to the public and family-friendly. Beautiful cars are strategically positioned up and down the avenues and judged in a number of categories. Impressive awards from Tiffany are distributed in a beautiful setting reminiscent of a European village. This year, Multi Marques from 1940- 1973 along with Porsche and Ferrari through 1989 will be featured. Ocean Avenue is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Visitors in town during this event will enjoy a special treat as they explore the storefronts to find each window decorated with a car theme. The shops enjoy a friendly competition of their own competing for the best display. Also, during this time frame, most shops offer unique items you will not find during any other time of year which makes shopping an added adventure. Event Hours: 11:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday, August 10, 2010 Event Location: Ocean Avenue and connecting streets in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea Event Fee: Open to the public for viewing Images courtesy of RM Auctions, Bonhams, Russo and Steele Issue9.indd 42 6/20/10 3:45 PM
