Montessori for Aging and Dementia - A Unique Approach to Purposeful LivingDate & Location:July 13, 2016Ohio Health Care Association 55 Green Meadows Drive South, Lewis Center, Ohio 43035, 614-436-4154
Course Description:Montessori for Aging and Dementia is an innovative approach that supports people by enabling them to make choices and to live as independently as possible. Roles and activities are developed for each individual, which are meaningful to that person. Montessori principles result in increased safety, reduced agitation and wandering, and promote independence. The Association Montessori International has, for the first time, established international guidelines for Montessori for elders. This program will share the international guidelines, provide concrete examples of the innovative work being done all around the world, and discuss how care communities can implement this person-centered approach.
Objectives:• Participants will be able to discuss the pillars of the Montessori philosophy for
elder care. • Participants will be able to identify five ways that Montessori can enhance the
lives of elders in their care community. • Participants will be able to describe the international standards for Montessori
for Aging and Dementia. • Participants will be able to identify aspects of the prepared environment that
support meaningful roles and build self-esteem among elders. • Participants will be able to design an effective method for assessing elders
needs, strengths and abilities for design of person-centered roles and activities.
• Participants will be able to evaluate video examples from other care communities to determine how the interventions used can be implemented in their care communities.
