Greetings MCC Members,

As many of you know, Billy Casper Golf will be staging the Fourth Annual “World’s Largest Golf Outing” to benefit The Wounded Warrior Project on Monday, August 11.

Starting in 2011, this event featured over 2500 participants in a nationwide effort that raised $40,000 for this great cause. Last year 10,499 players raised $735,440 in support of our brave service men and women.

MCC was unable to participate in the tournament this year as we had committed Au-gust 11 to the Maryland Mid-Amateur Championship over two years ago. However we really wanted to be a part of this great day and cause so we asked that MCC still be included as a contributing participant by asking for donations from our members and friends.

It is our sincere hope that you will support our Wounded Warriors with your kind donations on behalf of MCC.

My son and another friendly volunteer did collect close to $100 in cash contributions on the night of the fireworks and we thank all of you who contributed. (We’re in the process of attempting to get the “Leaderboard” to reflect those contributions.)

How does one contribute between now and August 11?

Please CLICK HERE to learn more and access the MCC donation site.

Please also feel free to donate through the MCC Member Drop Box.

Special Thanks to all of you who have already contributed and those of you who plan to join this great cause with a generous donation!

Thanks also for your membership at MCC and for ALL the various ways you support your Club!

With Best Regards and wishing you all a fun and safe August!

The Club Championship match play has begun! The Finals are Saturday Sept. 6th for all

flights except the Senior divisions, which will be held on Sunday Sept. 7th. These flights were separated since we have so many seniors who can still play competitively in the regular flights and have chosen to do so. The Super Senior event including those seniors 65 and over will be held in October as a stroke play event. ALL match play scores are post able and should be designated as a Tournament round. The proper process to post a match play round has been printed out from the USGA Handicap manual and posted near the handicap computer. The overall turnout this year is significantly higher than the last couple of years, so the competition(s) should be exciting. Don’t forget to put Sept 6th weekend on your calendar for the finals, and come to see the winners of this year’s championship and who gets the cov-eted up front parking spaces and is crowned 2014 Club champion!

Many noticed a recent ‘remodeling’ of the golf shop displays and merchandise and had some questions as to what hap-pened. No worries, we actually still have all the product previously on the floor, but in preparation for a professional photo shoot, we were asked to get the shop PICTURE perfect, so it may have appeared we “lost” some merchandise. We will slowly blend the merchandise back onto the floor, hopefully keeping the shop looking closer to photo ready. We also have fall merchandise that will be arriving that will be brought out as it arrives, so, as always, thank you for your continual support. Special ordering of any product is also an option.

A couple Mondays are booked in August for outside groups so please look at the web site calendar online to make sure your plans and available tee times coincide. The large white board was taken down when the new siding was put on the cart barn and due to its age, its condition and especially its weight, it will not be reused in its former spot. We have posted a two month calendar for upcoming events on the white board near the shop the one which lists cart path rules, hole location, etc. We will continue to search for a larger more permanent sign to replace this temporary two month sign. Of special note is the upcoming Maryland State Golf Association Mid-Amateur, a two day event on Mon-day August 11th and Tuesday August 12,th which has a number of our members competing and around 100 players go-ing off in tee times on that Monday and Tuesday.

The Men’s Member Guest sign up is now available online. The event will be held on Sept. 18-20th. Although you may have been directed to “sign up” in the Pro shop, it’s best to sign up online. Although the Pro Shop is very willing to help you with the online sign up, you will not be officially in the tournament until all the information requested is filled out. Take a look at the sign up form online and if you have any questions, please contact Greg, Dan or Randal. Sign up as soon as possible, you do not want to be miss this premiere event.

Kimberly in the shop will be leaving for college (Clemson) in the next couple of weeks, so say thanks to her for her help this season. She has done a great job at the counter, getting up to speed extremely quickly considering she has no golf background. We will retain most of the other golf employees into the fall, although some may have to work around their school schedules. Here’s to hoping this rapidly approaching fall sees better weather along with a great end of summer.

It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over! July

was a very busy and successful month here at Montgom-ery. Starting off with the postponed July 3rd event to the 6th we had wonderful weather that evening. The Wine and Nine was a wonderful evening with incredible food and wines. Not to mention perfect weather. Fun was had by all! We had entertainment on the patio with Beyond the Blues they did an excellent job. Twilight Golf even made it out this month with a beautiful evening. The Swim Team called it another year and ended with their swim team banquet on the 31st with 150 in attendance. Good job Dolphins!! August will be a little bit slower here with a lot of mem-bers on vacation. We will be offering daily specials in the grille beginning on August 5th. Specials will be listed in our menus. We look forward to Chef Tony’s culinary spe-cialties! Additionally, we will have entertainment on the patio with Safe Harbor, and Trivia on the patio at the end of the month. Our final pool party is scheduled for Sun-day, August 24th right before school starts. You will slowly see our summer help leave this month. The grille staff will say so long to Lindsey Stewart who is already gone, soon to leave will be Natasha. Megan Moersen and Alex Lopes. Our beverage cart girls will be leaving by the end of the month. However, we will con-tinue to see Megan on special occasions. Alex Shoop, our wonderful food runner, will be leaving as well. We would like to thank them for their service. Please wish them well as they head back to school. I will be meeting with the social committee on August 13th to discuss the events for the fall. If you have any sug-gestions please let me know. I hope that all of you enjoy the rest of your summer!

The 2014 MCC Dolphins swim team season has just concluded with an 11th place finish at the CCSDA Champi-onship meet. The summer has been highlighted by some excellent performances by both individual swimmers and the team as a whole. The Dolphins held their own against stiff competition in “B” division, posting a (0-3-1) record, but the standings do not reflect the true extent of their efforts. The season began with a clash against rival Chevy Chase which was decided in the final event of the meet, with the Dolphins being edged by just 4 points. The action continued as MCC made the trip to Columbia Country Club. Great swims, including several broken records, were not quite enough to earn the victory, but the Dolphins emerged with heads held high. The next week featured a tune-up in the form of an exhibition meet against “A” division foe Edgemoor where the Dolphins continued to impress. Weather played a large role on this swim season, as it did in many other as-pects of our day-to-day lives. July 7-12 saw two events post-poned due to storms; the duel meet against the Manor Mon-sters, and the “B” Division Relay Carnival. With these two events at the back of their minds, Montgomery headed to Bethesda Country Club to face off against the Tigers. A gutsy performance here again resulted in defeat, but the team continued to enjoy success with best-times and steady improvement. From July 21-25, the team competed in three events. The first, the make-up of the meet with Manor, was arguable the most exciting of the year. Going into the final two events, the Dolphins trailed by 14 points. The swimmers came up huge, winning both relays, and secured an im-probable tie. A last place finish at the “B” division championship meet the next day would have discouraged some, but not this group of swimmers. Two days later, the team rallied together and finished an impressive third place at the Divi-sional Relay Carnival. 11-12 age group swimmers Brian Kelly, Jack Songer, and Andrew Stevens performed exceptionally well at this meet, swimming in the 13-14 age group relays which finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Coaches Amanda Cha-con and Brendan Creamer had high expectations heading into the CCSDA Championship meet, and they were not dis-appointed. The dolphins had several excellent swims against their toughest competition yet, highlighted by a first place finish in the 15-18 men’s breaststroke event by Ryan O’Leary, breaking a 7 year old pool record at Army Navy CC. All told, the season resulted in 19 team records broken, new friends made, and countless memories that the swimmers will no doubt hold on to throughout this upcoming school year, until they come together again next summer. Great job this year Dolphins!

Congratulations to the 2014 MGA Presidents Cup Winner's

Mark Dexter(Gross) and Phil Moebus(Net). This is the MGA's stroke play championship. What a great accomplishment. Great Playing guys. The Presidents cup ends the point attainment for the Net portion of the MGA CUP. Stay tuned for the final NET standings. The top 8 Net players earn a spot into the draft for one of the two MGA cup teams. Remember this event is replacing the Hogan Cup to allow for more MGA participation.

Dear MGA Member, Our 2014 MGA Golf Schedule is in full swing. With that being said, we are not far off from our Premier Event, the Member/Guest Invitational (September 18-20). Last year, we had a good turnout with 48 teams participating. This year, we will be excepting the first 36 teams to sign up. After that there will be a waiting list un-til another flight can be filled. We need to start planning this event as early as possible to ensure its success. A lot work goes into planning this event and it is truly a collaboration between the MGA, the Management Team, the Head Professional, and his staff. We must get the commitments from our Members as early as pos-sible, in order to make this event as special as possible for you and your guest. You may wonder why we need commitments to this event at least a month and half before it occurs. There are several reasons: 1) To enable us to add more value to the event, the management and the MGA must know how many Players will partic-ipate as soon as possible. The more participants that commit early, the better the event will be. 2) For the club to shut down the course (which makes for a much better event), they must have commitments to justify it from an economical point of view. 3) Establishing a firm number of participants as early as possible allows for better planning, which will help provide for the best event possible for everyone . So we hope you can understand why your early commitment is so important to the success of this event. Everyone should have received the wallet calendars distributed at the Opening Day Drawing party and we hope each of you have marked this date down as a must play. Please keep in mind that we will take the first 36 teams who sign up and then there will be a waiting list until another flight can be filled. Sign-up will be done online or in the men's locker room to help the club better manage the event. Please have available as much information as possible about your guest. Particu-larly their email address. There will not be a “folder” for sign-ups in the pro shop as we have had in the past. The cost of this years event will be $625. This is an increase over the past year, however the MGA committee felt it was a necessary increase. The event is still an unbelievable value and raising the price this will allow the MGA to better manage the costs of the event. Please accept this letter as a “Save the Date” for the 2014 MCC Member Guest Invitational. If you played last year, please do your best to sign up early so you don't miss out. Thanks and we look forward to a great event! Sign ups begin August 1st. Please see the pro shop to sign up. Sincerely,

The M en's Gol f Associat ion

Superintendents News

We are over the halfway point in the year but not in the clear yet, at least as

far as the weather goes. July brought us a little bit of everything from heat, humidity, rain to some of the coolest temperatures we have ever had in July. That is why the Mid-Atlantic region is the most challenging region to grow the grass.

The course during this time of summer is showing its usual signs of stress. Where the poa annua and perennial ryegrass is in the rough it has declined and the poa in the fairways is trying to stay alive. Areas on our tees and more noticeably 13 fairway where we have bentgrass, scalping has occurred due to the puffiness nature of bentgrass during humid days in the summer. One thing that you may have noticed are the weeds in the rough that are bleaching out and dying. There is not much I can do about what color the weed turns as it is dying but last year a new herbicide came out that is what we needed and we have been using it. We are trying to go full force and eradicate these weeds in the rough that we previously did not have any product that was labeled for the control of these weeds. It is obvious how much is out there after we spray and you can see all the weeds turning white. Please be patient as we get through this and each year we will have cleaner roughs.

During the past month we continued our progress on some small projects like getting the bunkers edged, about 33 are complete and we have about 22 more to go. The step leading to the back patio from the red rock path was extremely hazardous so it was removed, graded and then put it back level. There has been some cart path edging in the low areas where sand and rocks collect. It is amazing to see how much the grass gets built up from the sand and rocks collecting there. The more permanent solution would be to strip the sod along the path and remove some soil bringing the grade of the sod down to the asphalt path. That is winter time work though.

Looking ahead into August we have some events to prepare for before we turn our attention to aerifying the greens. As a reminder we will be aerifying the greens on August 19th and 20th. Hopefully the weather cooperates with us and the rain stays away. Like always, we will be closing 9 holes each day for this and keep the other 9 holes open for play.

Also please visit my blog www.montgomerycc.blogspot.com to see pictures of course projects and any updates with what we are doing at the club.

In closing please remember to fix your ball marks and one other, replace your divots, rake the bunkers after you have entered them and place the rake with the handle pointing out. Once again I would like to Thank You for your Membership and Dedi-cation to Montgomery Country Club.
