AUGUST 2018 MONTH OF AUGUST August’s theme is Art and History. This month we will take a trip to see art work at the Columbia Art Museum, Telfair Museum and have dinner with Gen- eral Mitchel. Check out these events plus several local events! DISPLAY CASE This month’s display features a variety of Mardi Gras dolls. Your Activities Director, Suzanne, started collecting the dolls at a young age and every year for Christmas her mom got her a new one. She began working onboard the Mississippi Queen, based out of New Orleans, where she started acquiring many more when she was able to get off the boat and go shopping! If you would like to display a collection or items, see Suzanne in Activities! INTERNET/ART GALLERY DISPLAY Painting has always been a hobby in Diane Irwin’s family for many years begin- ning with her grandmother. Her grandma took her to the Detroit Art Museum for classes when she was in Junior High. Her husband, George, took workshops with her once he was re- tired. They especially loved going to Maine to paint where four of the paintings were done. The ocean scene was inspired by her daugh- ter’s cottage on Top Sail Beach in NC. Three of her children paint and one daughter is even an Art Teacher at Bluffton High School. Ron Sibley has always been interested in art but had no training until moving to the Cypress seven years ago. His work has mostly been in sky, water and still life leaning toward Impressionism and Realism. He hopes to start working on faces in the near future! He says, “I’ll try anything really, because my career experience was to not be afraid to fail!” Jean Thompson learned to draw and paint about 10 years ago here at Cypress in the Art Class. She remembered being very surprised that she could draw! She has used pastels, acryl- ics, watercolor pencils and water- color paint and found something to like about each. Before art, she spent several years quilting. She and her husband even won First Prize and Best of Show for a quilt at the Nevada State Fair. See more about our artists and their art in the Inter- net Gallery. If you are interested in displaying your art, please contact Annie Coughlin or Elaine Thomas. 2 The Cypress of Hilton Head

Off the Tee by Estelle Roberts Despite the torrential downpour the evening before, the course was playable on Second Saturday, July 14. Some nice cloud cover made for a delightful morning. Four teams, one 4-some and three 3-somes had at it! After nine holes, two teams were tied with scores of 35. Team Bill Dix, Marilyn Lorenz and George Carmody were victorious over Team Don Lorenz, Sylvia Penzel, Lou Mahony and Estelle Roberts thanks to Bill Dix’s chipping accuracy. Bill had a good day-he was closest to the pin too. Sylvia Penzel, a new member and first time Second Saturday partici-pant, was closest to the pin for the ladies. Welcome and Nice Going! Thanks to all for playing!

We will meet in the lounge at 8:45am with play at 9am!!

WednesdayAugust 8

Depart at 11:15amYou may have heard of VIM HHI, but you may not know

that last year the clinic provided free and comprehensive medical, dental and mental healthcare in approximately 28,000 patient

visits. The vast majority are the “working poor” families of Hilton

Head and Daufuskie Islands. They are employed in industries vital to maintaining a healthy island

economy: tourism, retail, food and beverage, landscape, golf, resort, housekeeping and other services.

But they lack health insurance and other resources to keep their families

well.Founded in 1993 by former Cypress

resident Dr. Jack McConnell who passed away in February of this

year, VIM is now celebrating its 25th anniversary, continuing to give hope

and healing to our neighbors in need.

Volunteers in Medicine Behind the Scenes Tour

New Books in the Library for July

“The Outsider” by Stephen King An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories. An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad. As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

“The Perfect Couple” by Elin HilderbrandIt’s Nantucket wedding season, also known as summer-The sight of a bride racing down Main Street is as common as the sun setting at Madaket Beach. The Otis-Winbury wedding promises to be an event to remember: the groom’s wealthy parents have spared no expense to host a lavish ceremony at their oceanfront estate.

But it’s going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons after tragedy strikes: a body is discovered in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony, and everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. As Chief of Police Ed Kapenash interviews the bride, the groom, the groom’s famous mystery-novelist mother, and even a member of his own family, he discovers that every wedding is a minefield, and no couple is perfect. Featuring beloved characters from The Castaways, Beautiful Day, and A Summer Affair, The Perfect Couple proves once again that Elin Hilderbrand is the queen of the summer beach read.

Employee of the MonthJune - Stephanie Adams

Joining The Cypress Club on December 13, 2017, Stephanie Adams hit the ground running as a server. Stephanie quickly learned all aspects of the front of the house and delivered excellent customer service to both co-workers and members alike. With our recent staffing shortages she is quick to offer filling in and helping out wherever and whenever needed. Recently a member commented on how on a particular Friday it was apparent that there was a staff shortage. During the entire meal Stephanie remained composed, smiling and attentive. She made a potentially stressful event turn into a very pleasant experience. We are glad that Stephanie is a part of The Cypress Team.
