ST. JUDE WALK/RUN TO END CHILDHOOD CANCERPlease Join Our Team: EXIT Out Cancer

A message from EXIT Realty Florida’s Regional Accounts Manager, Annette Tuttle

St. Jude Children’s Hospital holds a special place in my heart; my grandniece, Chloe Tuttle, is a patient there.

On February 15, 2012, my nephew Alex and his wife Lynda gave us beautiful twin baby girls, Hanna and Chloe. On Friday, April 12, 2013 little Chloe (pictured here with her mom Lynda) was diagnosed with Ependymoma, an extremely aggressive form of brain cancer - located on her brain stem. On April 15th Chloe underwent invasive surgery in an effort to remove the deadly tumor. Chloe also had a port inserted for future medications and a G-Tube for feedings, to avoid having to continually insert IV’s into her tiny arms. Sadly, they were unsuccessful in removing the entire tumor. The decision was then made to try and relocate Chloe to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. We received the good news on Wednesday, April 16th that St. Jude had accepted Chloe’s case – the only caveat being Chloe had to arrive in Memphis that Friday. Alex, Lynda, Hanna and Chloe quickly packed up their car in Ft. Lauderdale and drove straight up to Memphis. Many months of treatment, surgeries and prayers followed.

I am happy to report today, that after many additional months of therapy to re-teach Chloe how to swallow, she can now eat on her own! Her G-tube and port have been removed – (her voice is a little raspy compared to Hanna’s) and it is such a joy to see her being a “normal” little girl - playing, running, swimming, ballet, cheerleading; as I said, just being a normal little girl. Chloe is now a resounding 4 years old and travels back to St. Jude once every 3 months for evaluation. While we know they were unable to remove the entire tumor, since December 2013, she has remained stable and there has not been any new growth on the tumor. Does St. Jude rock or what!!

I would like to personally invite all of my extended EXIT family to join our team, EXIT Out Cancer, on Saturday, September 24th at John Prince Park in Lake Worth for a fun day of walking, running or just cheering to help support the amazing life-saving work of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Everyone needs to have access to your website, no matter their physical ability. Because your site is a place of public accommodation, it’s important as a broker that you ensure it is ADA accessible.Below are six tactics you can implement today to create an accessible website. This is not a comprehensive list, but rather a source to help you get started changing common features:

1. Clean font types.Crisp and clean fonts are important for screen readers — soft-ware programs that use a voice synthesizer or braille display to help blind or visually impaired users read text on the web. This is the foundation of creating an ADA-accessible platform for your consumers to access. Here is a great summary of what clean and clear text formatting should resemble. When the text is in a font that a screen reader can clearly scroll through, your site will be off to a good start for ADA requirements.

2. High-contrast themes.Removing the grayscale on your site also assists those who are visually impaired. Offering high contrast helps visually impaired people navigate through the design. You can see the tools on the right hand side of my Boulder real estate website that adjust the contrast according to the viewer’s needs.

3. “Skip to main content” link.For web users who cannot use a mouse, there’s a function called “skip navigation” or “skip to main content” that can be added to a site. Essentially, it lets a person navigating a website with a keyboard skip over all the links in a site’s navigation menu. It’s as simple as adding a link to this feature at the top of your navigation.

You may need to talk to your web manager about implementing it.

4. Alt text and HTML headings.Alt text (alternative text) is an image description that can be read by screen readers to describe an image to the visually impaired. HTML headings use text instead of images or CSS so that screen readers can pick them up.

5. Video closed captioning.If video content is an important component of your marketing, you’ll want to assist deaf and hard-of-hearing web users by including closed captioning with your video content. Here is an example of the value of captions, while making it fun and practical.

6. Audio descriptions.Videos with audio descriptions help blind and visually impaired users visualize videos and images to get a more complete picture. Below is an example of video using audio descriptions.If you’re operating a WordPress site, there are many accessibility plugins available. Here are several I’ve found helpful to boost page usability for everyone.
