SOMETIMES LIFE SHOULD BE MESSY

In was the end of the church picnic; of course I had had enough to eat, more than enough to eat, but I went past the dessert table once more anyway. I saw the lemon cream pie with the graham cracker crust cut into bars and I wanted some. There was a half a piece sitting there begging me to eat it, so I thought, “I don’t want to mess up another plate or fork, I’ll just pick it up in my hand.” As soon as I grabbed it I knew it was a mistake. There was more cream than crust and it was a cool glob in my hand. Some people saw me grab it so that made it even more fun.

Later on when explaining the event to a couple of people, I was saying how it had been a mistake because it was messy. Yet as I thought about it some more I realized, that lemon cream pie was the best lemon cream pie I’ve ever had. Maybe it was so good because I ate it with my fingers.

Psalm 51.10:

Create in me a clean heart, O God,   and put a new and right spirit within me.

We often sing a hymn with these words during the offering. We also think about these words as David did when confessing our sins, asking for forgiveness, moving toward repentance. Can’t we also think about this verse as we explore the wonderful joys God has created in this world. We sometimes avoid some experiences because they can be messy but as long as no one is going to be hurt maybe messy is ok. Maybe sometimes we should pick up that lemon cream pie in our hands and enjoy God’s wonderful creation.

FALL IS COMING

Speaking of new and messy things the fall schedule is coming. Let me encourage you to start some good habits this fall. Make a commitment to good faith habits like: Prayer, weekly worship, join a bible study, read your bible, practice generosity, grace and forgiveness.

WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THIS FALL

Sunday: 9:30 amWednesday: 5:30 - 6 pm (beginning September 21)Saturday: 5:30 pm

CYF NEWS & EVENTSDONATIONS WANTEDThis year we will be again collecting items to send in a care package to our college students. Please drop of any items you would like to send along to students in the red bin in the narthex. Some ideas of what to donate are: pens, highlighters, sharpies, snack foods, lip balm, easy mac, ramen noodle cups, hot chocolate, tea, gift cards, tiny books, post-it’s or anything else you think a young person might enjoy receiving.

ADDRESSESShout-out to all of you with students in college this year. We are collecting addresses to send a care package to your student this year. Please send the name and address to [email protected] or leave it in the office. Thank you.

MISSION: MN NICEThis year instead of traveling across country to do service work, we had students participate in MN Nice. This was a lock-in with a purpose. We had many confirmation age students participate and older high school students volunteer as leaders in this

3-day 2-night experience. During that time we completed 8 worksites, threw an impromptu car wash, volunteers prepared more than 200 meals for our crew, we collected and donated more than 75 items to the food shelf, and over 300 hours of service took place. We look forward to finding ways to incorporate MN Nice into a regular practice as part of our ministry.

See a group photo of the Mission: MN Nice participants on the back page of this issue.

CAVE QUEST VBS 2016 Thank you to all the parents, caregivers, volunteers and church leaders who volunteered their time to make Cave Quest a success. We were able to share our VBS experience this year with Christ Episcopal, St. Paul’s and United Lutheran Churches. Our participants and volunteers had a fun week learning about Jesus. It was great to see all the kids each night looking forward participating in each station. Our middle school students also enjoyed a week of leaning the theme bible story of the night along with completing service projects for the foodshelf and Jordan towers. We look forward to collaborating with others again next year and having a great week of learning and friendships.

MISSISSIPPI SHUFFLE

This year we had 9 students sign up for the Mississippi Shuffle. We had a good turnout even though it was sloppy due to the rain we had. Thank you to everyone who helped support our team. We raised a total of $1,200 for the American Cancer Society. We look forward to having other youth teams get involved in community events in the future.

Oh...and Hannah Nash won the penny wars and I heard a rumor that someone will be “pied” around Rally Wednesday.

THANK YOU’S & PRAYER MINISTRYThank you to Elaine Fosberg for “Lighting the Spire” for the month of September, “in memory of loved ones.”

Thank you to Gerald & Louise Mewhorter for sponsoring the Colombia Scholarship for the month of September, “in memory of our son, Dan.”

(The following note is representative of the notes that come to us for our gifts.)

Dear Chuck & Shirley Anderson,Thank you for contributing to my Young Adult in Global Mission fundraising page. With your support and the support of First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, I have reached my fundraising goal of $4,000! Woohoo! As I prepare for my upcoming year in Rwanda, it means a lot to know that you are supporting me in my journey. Your gift not only helps to ensure that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America can send me to walk with our companions around the world, but it also is a sign that you will be walking with me in the joys and challenges I’m sure to encounter along the way. I am so humbled by both contributions and cannot send out enough thanks for the generosity shown to me! Please send my thanks and gratitude to the congregation at First Lutheran Church. Thanks be to God!Peace,Kristy

Dear Julie and those at First Lutheran Church who came to our rescue,Thank you for graciously opening your church to host the RWAA Concert on Wednesday night. The performers and the audience were grateful to escape the heat. We appreciate your kindness.Sincerely,Susan, Director

Dear Pastor Arte and members of First Lutheran Church,When I think of all the love you have shown us the last couple of months I am reminded of Matthew 25: 34-40. During the course of Jim’s many hospitalizations you have consistently prayed, visited, fed and cared for us in more ways than we could have possibly imagined possible. For all of this we are truly grateful and humbled. We thank God for all of you each and every day.Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.Love,

Jim & Bunny Kulstad

COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

8

August 9, 2016

Members Present: John Rohan, Judie Bowes, Jill Cody, Kathy Emery, Roy Harley, Daryl Mark, Bill Rice, Diane Ringeisen, Linda Sievert, Tom Sasse, Jada Kitzmann, Pastor Arte

OPENING PRAYER: Pastor Arte read from Psalm 82.

CALL TO ORDER at 6:30pm by John Rohan.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA: There was one addition to the original agenda by Kathy, upon which Judie made the motion to approve the agenda and Bill seconded. Motion carried.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion was made by Daryl to approve the minutes from the July Retreat meeting and Tom seconded. Motion carried.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Roy Harley presented the Finance Committee report which was approved, with motions made and carried.

Teresa Nash was in attendance with a request from the Bells of the Bluffs requesting their own checking account to pay bills. Teresa added that the small amount of time it takes her to pay their bills will not affect her time. The Finance Committee did not feel it was to any advantage to agree to this as did the Council. Request was denied.

STAFF REPORTS : All reports were handed in and there were no additions or corrections.

OLD BUSINESS

HBC Phone/Internet: HBC has finished the installation of phone/internet. Training was completed and was noted that the new phone system has many added enhancements we have not had. There were some tweaks to the phones to make them work better.

Carpet: The Property Team received bids from various businesses in town and are going with River City with installation, if carpet is in stock, to begin in a couple weeks. If not in stock, it will be in September. The carpet will be tiles vs. rolled carpet, with the note that if a tile gets damaged, it can be lifted off and replaced with another tile. The areas to be replaced will be the steps, with rolled carpet, with tiles will be the Narthex, Conference Room and the Fellowship Hall. In the Hall, laminate will be laid out 14’ from the wall where the serving tables are located. This will make it much easier for clean up and won’t have to cover the carpet when serving. The cost of this project is $40,736.00. Carpet has not been replaced since the addition was built.

Stewardship for all Seasons:This was a subject for the Summer Retreat and the council members came up with ideas of “what could be done with a surplus”, IE: If we reach our budget and increase it by 15% then we could do one or more of the following: Support Homeless Pad Project, more MN Nice, additional pastoral staff, among other ideas. On August 25th, Pastor Art, Judie Bowes and Diane Ringeisen will attend a Stewardship Meeting in Owatonna.

NEW BUSINESS

Wednesday Schedule: The time schedule will look a little different this year. The meal will stay at 5pm, Worship(continued on page 9)

Page 9: MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH · City style show. Speaker: Barbara Tornow from Wentworth, SD. Barbara shares how her life was transformed from chaos into freedom. Monday,

9

COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES(Continued from page 8)

will be 5:30-6 and Education will be 6-6:55pm. The room will not be cleared of tables and if everyone is not done eating, they can continue to eat.

Suggestion was brought to the council of possibly having a “Business Directory” for members. This was in hopes that if anyone needed a carpenter, or a plummer, etc. then members can look in that directory to find a trades person they are in need of and a fellow member of First. At this time, a lot more discussion is needed to see how this can/could be done and if that is something people would access.

MINISTRY TEAMS

Worship and Music: Ideas were brought up about how we are going to use Memorial monies. No firm decision yet.

Property: The carpet information is listed above. The plaster work will be done in August or September. There was one AC that was fixed and this is the one that may have to be replaced.

Making Connections: Summer picnic is set for August 14th following worship.

Education /Youth: New material for education which should coincide with Sunday worship, making it more meaningful. Along with the Wednesday night time change, they hope to have a little newsletter that they can take home and continue with interaction at home. They are also looking at the mission trip out East at some time in the future. The Christmas Program is slated for December 18.

Christian Action: We worked on Habitat Project and work has begun on the Christmas Project. October 2 is the possible Crop Walk.

Media: No new work from the Media team.

Stewardship: Working on plans for presentations during church services.

Personnel: Kathy handed out the committee descriptions for each committee and we are to look them over and come back next month is there are any changes or additions. Kathy also handed out a flow chart that she has worked on showing what and who is under the various categories.

A third draft was presented regarding an Event Monitor for First Lutheran. We are to again look over and approve or bring additions/corrections to next meeting.

John brought up the fact that we need to start thinking about the Nominating Committee, usually at least two council members that are not continuing, to be that committee, with a total of 6 on the committee. It was noted that 4, possibly 5 openings for next year’s Council.

Pastor Arte led the Council in the Lord’s Prayer. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by John Rohan at approximately 8:30 PM.

Next meeting will be September 13th with Fellowship by Linda Seivert and Bill Rice.

Respectfully submitted,Diane RingeisenCouncil Secretary
