Men’s Health Month
Monthly Newsletter
June is National Men’s Health Awareness month, and is the perfect time to take a look at your
health, gentlemen. When was the last time you visited the doctor? If you can’t remember, you aren’t alone.
In a survey done by Yahoo Health, 81% of men knew the year, make, and model of their first car, but just
under half knew the last time they went to a doctor. Here are some health issues and preventative steps to
take:
1. Heart Disease is the number one leading cause of death in both men and women.
Prevention: Obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are all leading factors to cardiovascular dis-
ease, so maintaining a healthy weight and workout schedule are crucial to heart health. Eat a diet that is
low in saturated fats and high in fibers, along with exercise. If you are a smoker, quitting will drastically
lower your risk of heart disease as well.
2. Cancer: according to the U.S. CDC the leading types of cancer deaths in men are lung cancer and pros-
tate cancer. Some of the symptoms of lung cancer are shortness of breath, persistent cough, wheezing,
coughing blood, chest pain, and weight loss.
Prevention: While lung cancer can affect non-smokers, the vast majority of sufferers are smokers, so the
best preventative measure is to quit smoking. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, aside from skin
cancer, found in American men. The average age of diagnosis is 66 years of age. Some of the symptoms in-
clude frequent urination (especially at night), difficulty starting or stopping urine, painful ejaculation, pain-
ful or burning urination, or blood in urine or semen.
Prevention: While prostate cancer cannot be fully prevented, early detection
and treatment can save lives. It is important to talk with your doctor about
getting an exam before the disease progresses to other areas of your body.
3. Stroke: While the elderly are most at risk, a stroke can affect anyone, es-
pecially those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fi-
brillation, and those who smoke. .
While men tend to overlook symptoms or miss routine appointments, June is
the month to focus on your health and the health of friends and family. Be
sure to schedule a visit to your primary doctor and alert them of any of these
or other odd symptoms you may be having. It is better to find a problem early and treat it
than wait until it is too late.

Quotes
Happy is the man who
finds a true friend, and far happier is he who finds that true friend in his
wife.
-Franz Schubert
Too often we
underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an
honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the
potential to turn a life
around.
-Leo Buscaglia
Those who improve with
age embrace the power of personal growth and
personal achievement and begin to replace youth with wisdom, innocence with understanding, and
lack of purpose with self-
actualization.
By: Mary White
Shay Engel: Her fondest childhood memories are her Friday through Sunday camping, fishing and hiking trips
with her Dad. They spent almost every weekend doing the
things they love. Now her Dad takes Shay’s son with him to do the same things.
Art Christensen: His life is made up of many special memories because he married a woman who gave him two
wonderful children who are both in their 30s now.
Bette Scoggin: Her life is full of special memories and good times from the time she married in 1955 & the birth
of her children in 1956 & 1958. Now, she enjoys her three
grandchildren.
Lilly & Frank Mueller: Franks 90th birthday party was
wonderful because all their family & 50 to 60 good friends attended & enjoyed each other’s company while enjoying
birthday cake & looking at all of Frank’s pictures &
W.W.II memorabilia. Frank & Lilly also truly enjoy all the good times & good
friends they’ve made at the senior center, especially
playing cards every Tuesday & Thursday afternoon.
Sandy Shaffer: Memories of the 1949 blizzard are
something she will never forget, it’s the only time in her memory that the Big Horn river froze from shore to shore.
She wanted to walk across but her Dad said absolutely not.
Ruth Quinlan: Ruth grew up in the San Fernando Valley
of California. When she was six or seven years old, on
Sundays after church, her mother would take her to a pony ring so she could ride the ponies which she loved because
she couldn’t have a horse of her own. One Sunday, no one
else was there so she was allowed to ride & ride & ride.
I would love to continue doing the Good Times articles,
but need more people to interview. If you would like me
to add more memories & I have missed talking to you,
please let me know.

A Lighter Note One day two frogs were hopping
in and out of a watering hole and accidentally hopped in an
extremely deep hole. They tried to leap out, but to no avail had
no success, so they began to yell and croak until other frogs heard them and came to help. The
other frogs looked over into the hole and said the hole was too
deep for them to help, but both frogs kept leaping up the sides of
the hole. The other frogs, leaning over the hole and
waving their front legs, began to yell to the frogs to just give up and die and that there was no
hope of them getting out of the hole, but both frogs kept leaping
and trying to get out of the hole. They leaped for hours and one
of the frogs just gave up he was so exhausted and died. The other frog in the hole kept
leaping, but the other frogs, leaning over the hole, kept
yelling and waving their front legs for him to stop and give up,
but the frog kept leaping trying to get out of the hole. Finally the frog leaped so high that he was
able to leap to the top of the hole and used his back legs to push
himself up out of the hole. The other frogs said even though we
told you to give up that there was no hope of you getting out of the hole you kept leaping. The
frog that got out of the hole thanked the other frogs for
egging him on - the other frogs didn't know that this frog was
deaf.
Lesson: Sometimes you have to
turn a "deaf ear" to what others
tell you is impossible.

Grilled Hawaiian Pork Chops
1 cup low sodium soy sauce
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (or more if
you want it to be spicy)
3 large cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
2 Tbsp. ketchup
1 can of pineapple rings (reserve 1/2 cup of the juice for the marinade)
1 package of Smithfield All Natural Boneless Pork Chops
2 Tbsp. corn starch
Chopped scallions
INSTRUCTIONS
Whisk the low sodium soy sauce, sesame oil. brown sugar, ground gin-
ger, red pepper flakes, garlic ketchup and pineapple juice until well com-
bined. Pour the marinade over the Smithfield All Natural Boneless Pork
Chops and let them sit for at least 10 minutes or overnight (you can also
freeze them in the marinade and thaw them for later use). Spray the grill
with non-stick cooking spray and heat it to medium-high.
Place the meat and pineapple rings on the grill and reserve the marinade
to make the sauce. Grill them for 4-5 minutes on each side. Rotate them
a little bit midway through each side if you want a nice crosshatch grill
mark (this is optional). Keep an eye on them because every grill is differ-
ent- mine were thin but if your meat is thicker you can go a little longer.
Once the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees (or longer if you want
them well done) remove the from the grill and rest them for 10 minutes.
While your meat rests, whisk the cornstarch into the marinade and
strain it into a sauce pan. Heat over medium heat until it starts bubbling
then reduce it to low heat for a couple minutes to thicken the sauce.
Drizzle your meat and pineapple with sauce, sprinkle with chopped scal-
lions and enjoy!

nice and friendly people and enjoyed visiting
with them.
