In 2014, the GFWBA kicked off its Municipal Representative reporting program as a function of the Government Relations Committee. These important positions were recruited and established for the purpose of providing information to the GRC. The primary function of a Municipal Representative for the GFWBA is to stay close to each Representative’s respective City/Municipality officials that are playing a key role in governing the building and development industry, and provide consistent feedback on important issues that affect builders, remodelers and developers in our target areas.
At a minimum, this interaction includes a initial face to face meeting and introduction with Planning and Development officials regarding their role as a Municipal Representative of the GFWBA.
Ongoing, there will be consistent reporting back to the Government Affairs Committee of the GFWBA regarding issues so the GRC can take an organized approach in supporting or confronting important issues. The Rep’s role will also need to include up to date knowledge on City Council members and their positions on key issues in your area. The GRC will then lean on Representatives’ feedback in determining its efforts to support certain candidates in elections. Each GFWBA member should feel free to contact a Municipal Rep for their area if they are having an issue or receive important information that will impact building and development.”

OSHA Agrees to Postpone Confined Spaces Rule EnforcementIn a victory for single-family home builders, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) announced Oct. 2 its decision to delay enforcement of the new Confined Spaces in Construction Standard until Jan. 8, 2016.
Corps of Engineers Sheds Light on Wetlands Plant List In response to NAHB members’ repeated requests, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers published the National Wetland Plant List in the Federal Register on Sept. 14 for notice and comment.
BUILD-PAC Trustees Approve Funds for 2016 Election Cycle The BUILD-PAC Board of Trustees, made up of over 150 members nationwide, met Sept. 28 during NAHB’s Fall Board of Directors meeting to approve hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to pro-business candidates running for federal office in 2016.
Issue a Challenge for the Fall Membership Drive Local home builder associations are encouraged to participate in the fall membership drive that wraps up at the end of October. Leaders of the Membership Committee have challenged NAHB’s senior officers to see who can bring in the most members. Issue a challenge to another local, another state, or a fellow Spike. Take up the challenge and win great prizes from NAHB.
NAHB Economists Look at Prices per Square Foot The median prices of single-family homes started in 2014, excluding improved lot values, ranged from $159 per square foot for contractor-built homes in the Pacific and New England divisions to $80 per square foot for speculatively built homes in the East South Central division. See how your region compares.
Deadline to Apply for Committees and Councils Is Oct. 18 The deadline to apply for 2016 committee or council appointments is Oct. 18. All applications must be completed through NAHB’s online application system. NAHB strongly encourages interested members to apply. Anyone currently serving on a committee or council who wishes to continue serving in 2016 must re-apply.
NAHB Creates New Young Professionals Committee During its fall meeting, NAHB’s Board of Directors voted to establish a Young Professionals Committee for members age 45 and under. The committee will recommend policies, programs and services to provide a community for young professionals in the industry. Because this committee is new, the deadline to apply has been extended beyond the Oct. 18 deadline for committee applications.

CHEERS...
I don’t know how many of you have noticed a huge smile on the face of our most recent Past President, Jeff Avery. I understand he had to reintroduce himself to all of the members of his company it had been so long since they had seen him. Well, I think one of the main reasons Mr. Avery is smiling so is because of all the fine accomplishments our Association has made during his Presidency. Congratulations Jeff for a fantastic job. Here are just a few of the task implemented during his term:
Build Safe Texas Program is in full swing• The Marketing Guide• A very successful Showcase Home• A reasonable 2015-2016 budget • Steady membership growth• Corporate sponsors are on board • Builder After Hours events already sold out for the year• The Association had more volunteers for our 2015-2016 Board of Directors than • we had spots available
Jeff gave 100% the entire year and spent countless hours at our office working diligently with Kimberly, Sharon and the Exec. to stay ahead of issues and always being proactive. There is no one that can say Jeff had anything other than honorable intentions for this Association. Thank you so much Jeff and thank your lovely wife for the sacrifice she made this last year.
We understand you may have procured a little place of your own to escape from the pressures of business. We hope you have many happy days with your family at your property and may I say it is well deserved. Please join me in thanking Jeff and if you have a moment call him and share your thoughts about all the time he spent “leaving the wood pile a little higher than he found it”! Way to go Jeff.
R. Lynn Motheral
