Celebrate! Birthdays & Anniversaries

Mission News Our February Communion Rail Offering will go to Our Daily Bread's fundraiser, "A Heart for the Hungry." It is actually a dinner, dance, and auction, but we are helping to sponsor this. ODB serves a weekday substantial meal to the hungry and homeless, without questions asked. They average serving 200 meals daily, and our church is one of several who aid them.

Some may be interested in actually attending the Heart for the Hungry event. If you would like more information, please contact Trinity member, Mike McPherson: [email protected]. Mike serves on the board of Our Daily Bread. This year’s event is on Saturday, February 27th from 6-10:30 PM in the Gateway Ballroom at UNT.

Our mission project for February

is to collect jars of Peanut Butter for the Denton Community Food Center. DCFC provides food to individuals and families in emergency situations. Their service area includes 21 cities and communities. All who come to DCFC are offered jars of peanut butter, so the need is great.

Last month we collected 260 chunky soup cans for the Denton Wesley Center! Thank you!

“My ‘Elevator Speech’ for Why I’m a Christian”

I believe in love, it’s all we got

Love has no boundaries, costs nothing to touch

Without love I wouldn’t believe

In anything that lives and breathes

Without love I’d have no anger

I wouldn’t believe in the right to stand here

Without love I wouldn’t believe

I couldn’t believe in you

And I wouldn’t believe in me

--Bernie Taupin A Message from Pastor Jim [email protected]

Rev. Dr. Jim Bowden

An elevator speech is a clear, brief message or “commercial” about you. It communicates who you are, what you're looking for, and how you can make a contribution toward a better world. It's typically about 30 seconds, the time it takes people to ride from the top to the bottom of a building in an elevator.

I am on elevators virtually every dayKmostly in hospitals. Be-cause I usually wear some sort of clerical vestment or pieces of Christian jewelry, many have asked me over the years about my personal faith and/or my vocation as a pastor. Believe it or not, I’m often on an elevator when asked these questions. On many occasions, persons who didn’t even know me would ask if I would accompany them to the room of their loved one to say a prayer. I have always been glad to accept these unexpected invitations.

Even if the conversation is contained to the elevator, I have an elevator speech prepared. It’s not a rehearsed response, or some canned commercial. It’s from the heart, and I’ve come to believe that every Christian should be prepared to give an ac-counting of their faith.

If someone asks you why you are a Christian, are you prepared to give a “30 second” opening response? I say “opening,” be-cause our responses are almost always followed by questions that lead us into a deeper, more meaningful dialogue about faith and religion.

Here is mine:

I am a Christian because I believe in love. I also believe that even though I am created by God, and in God’s image, I’m bro-ken. I need to be made whole and free. I’ve hurt others and have been hurt by others. I need to forgive, and I need to be forgiven. I believe we all have within us a voice that cries out for reassur-ance that there is more to this life than what we know and ex-perience. I believe we all need to be loved, accepted, and have a place of belonging. I need to know that just as there is a God

who cares for me in this life, there exists the same God who will take care of me when I die.

I believe that God is real and God is love. I believe that God sent his Son into the world as the full and perfect embodiment of God’s unfailing and eternal love. I believe that Jesus died to show the world the ultimate act of self-giving love. I believe that Jesus didn’t remain dead. I believe God raised him from death to life. I believe Jesus is with us today through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. I believe God has given us a home called The Church. The Church is a community of redeemed people, who through confession and repentance, have chosen to place their faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that when we are baptized we are cleansed of sin and initiated into the Body of Believers, the Church. I believe when we break bread and share wine in Christ’s name, we are made one with him and with one another. I believe that as long as we live and breathe we are to learn how to love, lead in love, and serve by faith until Christ comes for His Bride, His Church. I believe God has given us the awesome power to either freely accept or fully reject his gracious offer to love us. Both in the present and the future, we will belong to God or be separated by God. I believe all we have to do is say “yes” to the One who has said “yes” to us from the very beginning.

That’s my elevator speech and I’m sticking with it!

When we begin our 40 days of Lent on Wednesday (Ash Wednesday), I pray you will develop your own elevator speech.

Please memorize 1 Peter 3:15 “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Love, Rev. Jim
