On May 9, 1979 the Nuclear R..ogulatcrry Ccrnri:iission issued am211drrents nos. 49 and 48 to the Operating Lice..'JSes for the Surry Pc:wer Station Unit nos. 1 and 2, which are designated as Technical Specification Change No. 57. The chariges are t.'1.e result 0£ our request to revise the Stearn Generator ~ plugging limit. 0£ significance are the follcwing changes:

Peaking factors are changed from FQ=l. 94 for Unit No. 1 and EQ=l.79 for lhit NJ. 2 to FQ=2.05 for both units.
Accumulator water -VOlurre is changed from 1075 cu. ft. minimum arid 1089 cµ.. ft. :rraximurn to 975 cu. ft. minimum and 989 cu. ft. maxirm.:m for both units.

On May 7, 1979, a routii.J.e inspection of the new fuel assemblies stored in the :ri..ew fuel storage area of the Fuel Building uncovered evidence of cxmtamination of the new frel assernblies by a foreign substance. 'Ihis substance was later identified as sodium hydroxide. Notification of this discove.....ry was rrade to all appropriate authorities.
On Id:ly 8, 9 and 10 all contaminated new fuel assemblies were washed with demineralize::1 water in an atterrpt to rerrove the scxlium hydroxide. After washing, two of these asserrblies were ship:p2d tO Columbia, S.C. for inspection by Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Divisia.'1., and ai..~er inspect.ion and further unsuccessful atterrpts cy Westiu;igmu.se to rerrove the contamination, a decision·was made to ret;..."rn the darraged asserrblies to Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Di visia.'1. at Colurrbia, S. C. for refabricatian.
On M:i.y 30 and 31, 1979, twelve asserrbliES "Were packaged for shipm=nt to Columbia and were shipped on June 1, 1979.
Investigation of this incident is continuing.
