1.1 Introduction

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), MMRDA & Doctors for You (DFY)have been working in the M-east ward of Mumbai for the past three years for improve-ment in the socioeconomic and health indicators of the PAP’s resettlement colonies.The interventions are being carried out through two health centres in the area. TheHealth centre in Natwar Parikh Area is functional since 2010 and in Lallubhai com-pound since 2013. The services are provided on daily basis by the team of doctors,paramedical staffs and outreach workers. The services are provided at the health cen-tres on daily basis like general OPD, dental OPD, Tuberculosis treatment, Immuniza-tion, Growth monitoring OPD, family planning and maternal & child health services.

In the health centre at Lallubhai compound specialized services i.e. physiotherapyand disability rehabilitation, Gynaecology clinic, Eye clinic and Skin disease treatmentetc. are also provided. The OPD services are backed up by laboratory services andphar-macy. With the opening of health centre, quality health services are easily acces-sible and affordable to residents of these PAP’s resettlement colonies and nearby slumareas.DFY has now been providing health care services to more than 1.5 lakh popula-tions.

Apart from services at the health centre, health services and awareness activitiesare also organized in the area through community meetings, rally, street plays etc. Themain aim of the project is to provide preventive and curative healthcare services to all.

1.2 Highlights of the Month

1.2.1 Inauguration Program of Psychiatry and De ad-diction OPD at LallubhaiCentre

Inauguration Ceremony of De addiction and Psychiatry OPD was held on 4th Januaryat Lallubhai centre. Dr. Usha (pediatrician) from Rotary Club of Deonar inauguratedthe OPDs. Other dognatries present on the occasion were Mr. A.V. Suresh (Presidentof Rotary Club of Deonar and CEO Eureka Forbes Ltd.), Mr. Prabodh Sharma, HeadMedical Programs from Rotary Club of Deonar, Mrs Aria Ohri from Eureka Forbes Ltd,Dr. Anuj Khandelwal and Dr Sonal Khandelwal, Consultant Psychiatrist, Mr. Naresh

Kasar, Senior Police inspector of Mankhurd Police station, Dr. Magdum, De addictionCounsellor from Anvay Foundation, Navi Mumbai and other members of Rotary Clubof Deonar. Dr. Pritish Jalgaonkar, Dr. Rachna Lakhani, Dr. Kamran Shaikh and Dr.Amit Nohwar from DFY were also present for the program. The guests spoke about theimportance of De addiction and Psychiatry services at Lallubhai centre and its pocketsareas. This event was concluded with the refreshments and hence as usual DFY is onestep ahead.

1.2.2 Dental OPD Services started in the evening

Dr. Vaishali Venu (BDS) and team were providing daily dental services in the morning.After prolonged demand from the community MRVC-DFY health centre decided tostart Dental OPD services in the evening also. As a part of its larger commitmentto work towards bringing preventive and curative services in the community, Dentalservices were started from 9th January 2017 from 5 pm to 8 pm.

1.2.3 Special Orthopedic OPD Launched at LallubhaiCentre

A special Orthopedic OPD has been started at Lallubhai centre from 11th January 2017,for the benefit of the patients from different orthopedic problems. The OPD is aimed atenabling the residents of the slum with greater accessibility to quality orthopedic ser-vices. These services are available on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. The timing of theOPD is from 2 pm to 4 pm. Common problems like arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back-ache, vitamin D and calcium deficiency, joint problems are being treated by OrthopedicSurgeon Dr. Vinit Karn MBBS. MS. This special OPD launch is aimed to allow theresidents to save on both time and expenditures that are incurred by patients in travel-ling long distances to avail quality Orthopedic services. Medicine, Laboratory test andPhysiotherapy has also been arranged for the appropriate and adequate treatment of thepatients.

1.2.4 Special token of appreciation from patient forMRVC-DFY Health centre, Mankhurd

Mr. Jagganath Pawer,a Local Person from Hiranadni always come to MRVC-DFYLallubhai centre to receive treatment. He was happy with the services offered at thecentre and also highly impressed with Dr. Pritish Jalgaonkar’s treatment to him. Withhis compassionate heart he donated a Digital BP Machine to the centre. Thanks to Mr.Jaggnath Pawar for his kind donation.

1.2.5 Outreach Mobile Immunization services at Man-dala, Bainganwadi and Shivaji Nagar area in Go-vandi

MRVC-DFY had been conducting outreach immunization camps at Mandala slums,Mankhurd in association with MCGM and Zahara Hasanat Trust, Mumbai. As a partof scaling up of outreach immunization services, new outreach spots have been identi-fied in Bainganwadi and Shivaji Nagar area of Govandi in consultation with MCGM.Awareness sessions are conducted in the areas and beneficiaries are provided free Im-munization services along with Vitamin A supplementation and Deworming services.Two sessions at different spots are conducted each day. Every month new places forconducting the session are identified and added to the list. A target of total 40 Immu-nization spots and sessions in a month has been set for this Mobile Outreach Immuniza-tion Project increasing by 5 spots every month. To incentivize the families availing thisservice and to promote the concept of Hand Hygiene, free soaps also were distributedto the beneficiaries for the promotion of hand hygiene under the Soap for Hope project.

The Skin OPD (Dermatology) services were started at MRVC Health Centre, LallubhaiCompound in July 2015. The same service has been started at Natwar Parikh fromSeptember 2016. This services are available four times in a month in every Thursdayfor both the centers and out of 1st and 3rd week services have been sponsored by DignityFoundation and rest of are founded by Doctors For You.

1.3.11 Statistical data of Under Five ClinicThis clinic was started for the children of 0-5 year age group. This group is the mostvulnerable age group for malnutrition and subsequent mortality due to under nutritioncomplicated by infections. The aim of Under-five Clinic is to promote health of motherand children of this age group.Services:

• Measurement of Height and weight

• Treatment of common conditions of mother and child

• Assessment of immunization status

• Provide nutritional education to mother

• To provide family planning counselling and services

In this clinic both mother and child are provided comprehensive health care services atfree of cost. Since this is health promotion clinic, mother is asked to follow up everymonth with child for growth monitoring.

3. Awareness among family members: The family members are educated aboutmode of TB transmission, precaution to be taken to prevent spread of disease andimportance of timely intake of medicines and development of drug resistance dueto incomplete and inadequate treatment. Family members were also advised tovisit health centre in case of symptoms such as Cough (> 2 Weeks), Fever anddecreased appetite.

1.4 Case stories of patients from Lallubahi com-

pound

1.4.1 Case Story of a ChildOn 6th January, 2017 a three year old girl was brought to the Lallubhai health centrewith suffocation and breathing problem. She was playing toys but suddenly she hadbeen experiencing respiration problem with suffocation. Through the physical exami-nation it was suspected that she may have a steel bolt put into nostril during playing.DFY Doctors with their expertise and assistance from other staff members managed thecase well and removed the bolt.

1.4 Case stories of patients from Lallubahi compound 17

1.4.2 Case story of a patientOn 21st January, 2017 a female patient came to Lallubhai Centre with complaints ofheadache since many months. She has consulted many physician in the locality forthis but no relief. Ultimately she came to MRVC-DFY Lalllubhai Centre’s OphthalmicOPD and got examined for refractive error and was found to have abnormal eye sightwhich was the reason of her headache. Although a simple case, there are many caseshere in this localityremainingundiagnosed due to ignorance and illiteracy prevalent inthis area. Eye OPD is helping poor patient to deal with their headache and similarproblems like this. Eye OPD attendance exceeds more than limits. At the same timewe do awareness campaigning for vita deficiency.
