O D …by Pastor Tom Grevlos “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters…”   Romans 12:1

From the heart— a child walks through the gate of America’s Shrine—the Magic Kingdom, holding Grandma’s hand and seeing the majes c Cinderella castle for the very first  me! For all—it is a shared fairy‐tale moment, a wish coming true.  Created in the frui ul imagina on of God, we are wired to be dreamers and wishful thinkers. But wishful thinking can o en get lost in the human response of inac vity because we make our wishes depend on us! When wishes are coupled with hope, however, what a formidable force through Christ; lives spring into ac on!  When we make the star we wish upon our North Star, Jesus, dreams can be realized because God can move mountains. God IS a God of ac on!  One can almost feel the heartbeat of Paul wishing, hoping, praying for lives to be transformed by the love of God. So too—do I make an appeal for Shepherd of the Hills and our world. At night, I see the moon, the stars…and I wish~  

*That God’s love would go viral like the ALS “ice bucket challenge!”  *That the tragic events of Ferguson, Missouri, would lead to honest conversa ons about race and socio‐economic jus ce.  *That every person connected with Shepherd of the Hills would commit to the calling of God’s church in this  me and place.  *That every parent would honor the bap smal promises made on behalf of their child.  *That “Living Out Loud…Faithfully” defines our lives.  *That “I don’t have  me” when asked to serve God’s Kingdom becomes “What can I do?”  *That the power of the Spirit overtakes our worship and learning hour on Sunday morning!  *That an adult’s faith journey is enriched by a small group experience.  *That generosity of resources flow from a heart filled with love.  *That God will be honored with our efforts in following Jesus. 

 My challenge to each of you is to write your own wish list, ten hopes for yourself that reflect the transforming love of God in ac on. “My appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters…” is to par cipate in God’s Kingdom—a Kingdom not of enchantment and wishful thinking leading to human inac vity, but a Kingdom grounded in truth and reality—an ac ve and frui ul Kingdom that con nues to change and right the world!  Peace~ Pastor Tom

“It’s Been Three Months?”  

I can’t believe that the summer has come and gone. It seems like I just landed in Aus n and at the same  me it seems like I have been here forever. Aus n is a place that Jessica and I can already call home and this congrega on, family. I’ve experienced camp with kids from every age level, traveled across the country, built rela onships with many of you, performed bap sms and funerals, developed new worship prac ces, and built a really exci ng pla orm for faith forma on with the help of Nick and Jeanne. (You’ll learn more about that later) It has been a very busy summer and I am looking forward to the new rhythm of life in the fall. There is a palpable energy around this place that is going to carry us into a very bright future… and I am delighted to be a part of it.  

I have to extend a very large word of gra tude to both the congrega on and the staff of Shepherd of the Hills. The staff has been a joy to work with and the support that we show one another is a beau ful example of what can happen when you let the spirit of God lead the way. The congrega on has embraced both Jessica and myself with open arms and you are a big reason we can call Aus n home. Thank you to everyone in this very special community. It is a pleasure to serve you and I pray that this is only the beginning of a very grand adventure.

THIRST is for women who seek a deep connec on to themselves and God. Over the course of  me, a variety of opportuni es will be provided, including life mapping, women who write, and engaging book chats!  

Our first encounter will be through  IMAGINATIVE PRAYER! 

 

What IS imagina ve prayer? Imagina ve prayer is connec ng with and hearing God through mental images. It helps us experience a story in order to hear, see, and touch God in new ways.               It helps move us from the external head knowledge of God to an internalized, deeper knowing of God. Imagina on and prayer are meant to enhance each other. 

Richard Foster, one of the world’s most preeminent theologians on the spiritual disciplines and prayer writes, “Using the imagina on also brings the emo ons into the equa on, so that we come to God with both mind and heart. It is vitally important to understand scripture intellectually, but if we have not felt it emo onally, we have not fully understood it.”

Beginning Thursday, October 23rd for five consecu ve weeks, 7:30‐8:30 p.m. Come as you are able.  

You are invited to recognize your thirst, your parched soul, your weary body. To meander and rest in God’s presence, to take the inward journey and see where it winds…brings us to the fragrant breath that breathes life into cracking, dry bones. We rise to the words of Isaiah, 

 “You will be like a watered garden, like a flowing spring whose waters 

never run dry.” 

Thirst T : W ’ S There are mes when the sun blazes hot overhead, the day stretches long in front of us, and we iden fy our thirst. Like empty jars, we drag our bodies to a source of water hoping to be filled. A few hours later, our thirst returns. Jesus promises something different! To the Samaritan woman, he speaks of water that quenches our spiritual drought…our dusty souls…our dry and empty wells.

Like puppies, children are visually cueing into us all the  me! They pick up on what we DO—how we LIVE—what we SAY.  Just try to sneak out of a room—they catch us every  me!  

So here are some points to ponder—knowing our children are watching the answers played out by the lives we lead. 

I, myself, have the vibrant faith I hope my kids will have as adults. My kids observe me living out my faith in our home and community. I make cul va ng my faith a priority in my schedule. I can talk about God and faith ma ers with a certain amount of comfort. I have a suppor ve marriage and/or group of friends.  

How’d you do? If we want our children to have an “inside‐out” faith—one that guides and sustains them, one that grows and con nues with all life stages, they can find a great many answers in lots of different places…but the most las ng impression will be what they witness IN you! They know…by what they see.

“What is Faith Forma on?” It’s a journey in which we learn and prac ce our rela onship with God in every aspect of life; it is our lifelong process of growing into a mature faith.  

“A Faith That Fills” is the pla orm upon which Shepherd of the Hills faith forma on stands. This pla orm is what will give shape and form to the programs we run, the curriculum we select, events we host, and how we plan worship. Whether a li le toddler or a re red pastor, there is a need for “A Faith That Fills”; a faith that inspires us and gives us energy, a faith that gives meaning and purpose to our lives, a faith that enables us to Live Out Loud.  

This pla orm is built on 5 Values essen al to “A Faith That Fills.” Founded in experience and a close reading of the Book of Ephesians, the 5 Values give us a pla orm upon which to build faith forma on no ma er the age. The 5 Values are: Community, Hospitality, Par cipa on, Learning, and Prayer.

WAY TO GO—Shepherd of the Hills!

SPLASH! Children learned they are baptized into a loving family giving them identity!

SPLASH! Gallons of water and oodles of snacks were enjoyed by all!

SPLASH! Immersion time was spent in the stories of God!

SPLASH! Soap, towels, toothbrushes, & combs were “sprinkled” into care kits for others!

SPLASH! Water balloons & an 18 foot water slide made Wednesday wild & wacky!

SPLASH! We were showered with love from our counselors!

SPLASH! We soaked up new friendships!

SPLASH! God drenched us in grace, community, laughter, and joy!

What a wonderful week of church day camp our kids had! The week was a fun week full of growing opportuni es for our children and our church. Several families extended invita ons to friends outside the church which made this experience a chance for us to see what it feels like to be a church without walls. Hurrah! We saw the children create bonds with each other, the staff and our savior, Jesus Christ! How important it is for each of them to know they are a Child of God. The camp was led by four fantas c counselors from Lutherhill Ministries. Here are some  dbits of why, as Moms, we loved it...  M  T  #1:  “My daughter Abbey has a ended the day camp for the past two years and she loves it. It's wonderful to see her faith grow and to see her excited about God's word from just one short week at camp.  We have a special needs child‐‐Abbey's li le brother‐‐which makes a ending church regularly quite difficult. It's so wonderful for her to have these experiences and to learn more about God's promise for us and to appreciate all that He has given us. We're so very apprecia ve of all of the hard work that the staff and volunteers contribute for our children!”  M  T  #2: “What a fantas c groups of counselors! How wonderful that my children were able to see first‐hand how young adults can share their faith with others. I can’t imagine more posi ve role models for my children.”  M  T  #3:  “Here are a few thoughts as to why I think it is important for our kids to have church day camp: to bring a sense of community to our children, to li  up their hearts with new friends in faith, to hear God's word and then experience it in ac on, and to let them have a  me to let go and release their "growing" energy while experiencing new things. Also so that they may see, hear and feel the joy of being part of a church family.”  M  T  #4:  "What a blessing it is to have your child in a safe, encouraging environment during the day.  I'm so glad she's surrounded by Godly people, especially the young group leaders!  Alli said several mes, "when I grow up I want to be a counselor".  We look forward to 

more events my child can a end".    M  T  #5: “The children look forward to this week each summer.  Throughout the year they bring up topics that they have discussed at camp and relate stories about how much fun they have at "church camp"!  M  T  #6: “Church day camp was a wonderful loving experience full of fun games, fabulously silly songs, and learning about God while helping others.  My kids absolutely loved it.”  A special thanks from ALL of us to ALL of you who made this happen! ~~~The Day Camper Moms

Finance Focus

Focus on Outreach

As you may have already read in previous communica ons, the Benevolence and Social Concerns Ministry teams have combined our focus to form the Outreach Team.  The Team “job descrip on” has iden fied such responsibili es as having oversight of all mission projects for Shepherd of the Hills, crea ng the decision making process of the missions supported, bridging the mission effort between the congrega on and community locally and globally through educa on, crea ve communica ons and iden fying opportuni es to share our gi s and talents to put our faith into ac on and to be a catalyst for par cipa on by all.  

Some people have already stepped forward to serve on the Outreach Team.  We would like 8‐10 people of various ages, including a high school youth to serve on the team. If you have a passion to guide the hands and hearts 

of our congrega on towards this program effort, please contact Norma Smith or Pastor Tom immediately so that the Outreach Team will be in place for our September 23rd mee ng at 7:30 pm.    

In the mean me, we con nue to support the organiza ons laid out in our 2014 budget towards our benevolence goal of  $104,150.  The Council approved an addi onal $14,000 represen ng a Biblical  the (10%) when the $140,000 proceeds of the roadway sale are received from the City of Westlake towards extra benevolence this year.  

In October, watch for details of our collec on of women’s clothing to support the local Dress for Success program.   

Together we can do God’s work through our hands.   Thank you for your generosity and support.

SotH is responsible for coordinating, preparing and serving breakfast for 

homeless people at First Methodist Family Center (13th and Lavaca) on

C.A.R.E. Moms (college age requires encouragement) 

We will start collec ng student addresses to send care packages to our college students lovingly 

created by—MOMS!  Watch for sign‐ups in the narthex. 

Steve Larson, D.Min., L.M.F.T., L.P.C. and member of Shepherd of the Hills, will begin a support group for people experiencing life depression.  The group will meet Wednesdays from 4pm to 6pm at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church beginning October 1st  at a cost of $50 a session and con nue on for at least 12 sessions. The format will follow the outline of the 12 steps and will be interac ve and spiritually focused. The experience will require a 12 week commitment and, if paid "up front", would cost $500. Depression is not a sin but a serious mental health issue to be addressed openly and without shame. If interested you may email Steve at steveglarson@gmail.com or text or call at 512‐422‐2150. 

Lutheran Social Services of the South “Tomorrow’s Child Golf Ou ng” benefi ng New Life Center in Canyon Lake is Monday, September 22nd. We are hoping to gather 3‐4 foursomes to par cipate in this terrific cause for a great ministry!  Please let Pr. Tom know if you are interested,  tom@shephills.org 

The 2014 Guatemala Mission Trip will be October 22‐29.  Those who plan to go on the trip will meet in September to discuss trip details.  If you wish to sign up or have ques ons, contact Don Cadenhead (donaldc1204@gmail.com) or cell (512)‐705‐1528). 

The SonShine C will be star ng a year‐long study of the Book of Genesis. Don Cadenhead, James Parks, and members of the class will lead lessons in our journey through the first book of the Bible. The first class will be held on September 7th in the Sonshine Room, 9:30 a.m.‐10:30 a.m. The class will be held each Sunday morning and all adults are welcome to par cipate.

WHO ARE THE DISTANT BROTHERS

BAND?

Dan, Ryan, and Tommy were just jamming in the stairwell of the Celebra on! Community Life Center a few years ago and they decided to record a song because of the great acous cs. That experience gave birth to the three of them forming a band and adding a fourth member, Ma . They have played at Lutheran gatherings, various Church events, music venues, bars, and house par es. They have fun wri ng songs, covering other ar sts, and bringing a folk rock sound to toe‐tapping music. The name “Distant Brothers” comes from Dan and Ryan sharing the same last name (spelled differently) and discovering that going way back, they are related.   We welcome them to Shepherd of the Hills

and Aus n, TX Saturday/Sunday,

September 6/7 for our Fall Launch Weekend.
