March 2015 Newsletter
I am absolutely delighted the Badminton Team won the Gibb Memorial Quaich
(Primary) for the third year running. This is wonderful news, well done
everyone and thank you! Special thanks to their trainer, Mike Louden. Places
are still available in the badminton club, so if you are interested in joining, please do.
I am pleased to say the children are making very good progress in their learning and I have
particularly enjoyed helping with fractions, percentages and decimals this term. It is great to see
so many children improving their maths skills. Keep up the good work everyone!
P7 worked with pupils from cluster schools at our ‘World of Work’ day. I was especially pleased to
see them working so well with the children from the other schools and asking exciting questions.
Thank you to our Cluster Team for organising this and to the
companies who gave up their time to share their experiences with the children.
Please remember, if you have any concerns, queries, worries or suggestions, please let me know
and I shall be happy to help.
Kind regards,
Carol Kyle
Playground Improvements
A date for starting has not yet been finalised, however, I am told this may be closer to the
summer break than expected. When further information comes to me, I shall share it with you.
Swimming
Please remember to remind your children to bring and wear their swimming caps for lessons at
Bruntsfield Pool, both in school lessons and for swimming clubs. This helps ensure our pool drains
don’t become clogged with hair, causing delays in the cleaning process. We advise valuable or
sentimental jewellery is left at home on swimming and PE days. There are two opinions on the best
way to cover a verruca: some say waterproof plasters suffice; others say verruca socks are best.
The swimming teachers are happy with either, as long as a verruca is well covered, the
children may take part in swimming lessons.

World Book Day
This Thursday (5th March) Bruntsfield Primary School participated in World Book Day. We enjoyed seeing all of the pupils and staff dress up as their favourite literary characters. Watch this space in the April/May Newsletter for photos and stories about World Book Day success!
Sickness and Absence
A reminder to all parents, if your
child has had the winter vomiting
bug (sickness or
diarrhoea) he or she should
remain out of school for a
minimum of 48 hours since the
last instance of sickness.
Please help us ensure the
wellbeing of our staff and pupils by
stopping the spread of
sickness!
Lunch Money
Could all parents and carers please keep
up with lunch money payments to avoid
overdue monies.
If you have any questions about lunch
money please check with Ms Bate in the
office.

CONGRATULATIONS DANIEL!!!!
DANIEL SPENCE from P4A has been selected as a winner of the
2014 Green Pencil Award.
The Green Pencil Award is an annual creative writing
competition throughout City of Edinburgh Council Schools.
This years’ theme was ‘Scotland’s Seas’.
Scotland’s Seas
A little boy called Angus Ball went to a beach on the coast of
Scotland. He loved picking up shells, rocks, seaweed, pebbles and anything he could find, but
he especially loved coloured stones.
Orange stones, blue stones, green stones, yellow stones, red stones. He found another
coloured stone but it was no coloured stone he had seen before. It was blue with a white
endless maze. When he took it home and went for tea it cracked. After dinner he went to
study the odd stone but it was a baby Kelpie. So he went back to the coast because it was
quite near and put it in the water,
reassuring the Kelpie he would see it every day. In the water at the coast of Scotland, the
Kelpie.

Note from City of Edinburgh Council
Children in P1, 2 & 3 will have fruit as part of their school lunch instead of in morning break, as
agreed by the City of Edinburgh Council. Please encourage your children to always take a piece
of fruit at lunchtime and if they would like fruit, or another healthy snack, please remember to
send it along each day.
Please remember to give your child a healthy snack for break.

The Alien in the
Spaceship
The alien arrives from the blue, shines bright like a diamond. Gleams in the sun, makes a sound like a diamond scraping on glass. The ray gun, so big and heavy, it will blast you away! In fact, it could turn you into dust, but the worst case is that it will disintegrate you! It makes a sound that has never been heard before. The alien is green with spikes down his back, and he’s bald like my dad! If you get on the wrong side of him he will get you and will never let you go. Oh he’s waiting… he’s waiting to get you!

The Witch’s Kitchen
Into the woods. and out of the city. There lies a crouched cottage, with a mystic figure lurking by. Inside the cottage, an old woman stands, with broomstick in her hand The witch’s room is cluttered
and murky,
and wooden instruments lay by. The wooden floor boards creak and crackle. So if you take a visit, be sure you’ll never return!
She’s waiting…just waiting…to get you !
By Alfie P6B
The Witch’s Kitchen The cottage was dusty with the grated emeralds of
a long lost pirate treasure.
A cauldron was bubbling with a poison like
potion
spreading its gases……..
everywhere!
In the corner, a witch, with eyes as blank
as paper,
sat watching……..
as the bubbles and gases
hissed on like an old, rusty kettle.
The sink was dripping with blood like a
tumbling red waterfall,
and propped up
against the door
was an old, splintered,
bent,
tired out broom.
Dead animals hang from the ceiling
Their souls never to be seen again.
Never approach the tattered
cottage, for when
you come…….
she’ll be ready………………………..
The plant-pots were stuffed with
paralyzing herbs,
just waiting to be eaten by unfortunate
souls……..
A hat,
on the table,
with patches and stitches.
A wand,
twinkling and sparkling
in the hand of the witch.
Cages, with skulls and skeletons and blood,
once held prisoners,
or slaves
to this disgusting old hag.
Bottles,
On shelves
held potions of all kinds,
most of them surely would kill you.
Never dare………….Never dare………
To approach the tattered cottage,
for when you come………
She’ll be ready… By Iris P6B
