Ronen Bergman, an Israeli experton strategic affairs, believes that the threemajor factors for an Israeli strike on Iranare now in place: international legitimacy,Israel’s capability and the necessity toact. Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs,Moshe Yaalon, responding to those whoquestion Israel’s capability to launch apreemptive strike, told the HerzliyaConference that “any facility that isguarded by a human being, can be pene-trated by a human being. It is possible tostrike at all the facilities in Iran militarily,and I can say that from my experience aschief of staff”. The threat, moreover, ofIranian retaliation is, some conclude,overblown. “There will not be 100,000dead, “says Defence Minister Ehud Barak,“or 10,000 dead of 1000 dead. The Stateof Israel will not be destroyed”.

Other Israeli experts are not con-vinced of the wisdom of immediate action.Former Mossad chief Meig Dagan believesa military strike now would be the “stu-pidest thing I have ever heard.” RetiredIsraeli military intelligence head Maj-Gen.Amos Yadkin echoes these commentsarguing that if and when Iran makes thedecision to get the bomb, there will still betime for a strike to be ordered. AddsShlomo Brom, a general retired fromIsrael intelligence and former deputynational security advisor, “assuming thatonce they do make a decision toweaponize, we will know it...There is awindow of time from the point of makingthe decision and until they succeed inweapon making”. Indeed, some within theIsraeli Defence Forces believe it could beas late as 2018 before Iran has nuclearoperation capability.

There is some general agreementamong military personnel both in Israeland within the international community.Even the most optimistic military com-manders in the IDF admit that Israel can-not completely wipe out Iran’s nuclearcapabilities. Senior officers are on recordas saying “we will have to go back to Irana second time” and that “we have no illu-sion that we can delay their plans by morethan two or three years.” Moreover, alarge scale operation against Iran wouldquite likely mean strikes against Iranianmissile launchers in Lebanon, Gaza andmaybe even Syria. Such operations wouldstretch IAF resources, even if not beyondits capabilities. Bombing Iran wouldmean Israeli pilots would have to fly more

than 1000 miles across unfriendly airspace, refuel in the air en route, fight offIran’s air defenses, use at least 100planes and attack multiple undergroundsites all at the same time. “I don’t thinkyou’ll find anyone who’ll say, ‘Here’show it’s going to be done - handful ofplanes, over an evening, in and out,’”,says Andrew R. Hoehn, director of theRand Corporation’s Project Air Force.

The Jewish Standard believesthat while all options must remain onthe table a pre-emptive Israeli attack atthis point is premature, even if Iran con-tinues to hit “soft” Jewish targetsaround the world. Sanctions are havingan impact. Mysterious explosions havekilled scientists and destroyed missileplants. Computer worms have set backresearch programs. We are by no meanssuggesting that the rhetoric fromJerusalem, or from its neoconservativeallies in the United States, should betoned down. Nor do we think, as someincredibly naive observers suggest, thatall it would take to stop Iran’s nuclearprogram would be to treat Ahmedinejadwith “respect”. Mutual deterrence is notan option either. Iran is not a “rationalactor”. Its proxies in Lebanon and Gazanever consider how many of their ownpeople might perish in a nuclear war.

Some fifty years ago, Levi Eshkolwas being prodded by his ministers andthe public to launch an attack onEgypt. For several months Eshkolresisted waiting, wisely as MichaelOren has pointed out, until he receivedthe go-ahead from Lyndon Johnson.We think the current Israeli govern-ment would do well to follow Eshkol’slead, a view, according to one poll,shared by 80 percent of Israelis.Barak Obama may be cautioning Israelagainst “loose talk of war”. But ifIran’s threat to block the Straits ofHormuz is not a bluff, if sanctions ulti-mately prove to be insufficient, thepresident has stated unequivocally thathe would then be prepared to use forceto stop Iran’s nuclear build-up. Yes,Israel alone has the right to determineits response to threats to its nationalsecurity. But the last thing the coun-try needs is further international iso-lation. We think it is in Israel’s bestinterests if the US military doesn’t haveto be “sucked in” against its will to fin-ish the job.

And so in responseto the actions of some 1500extremists, a bill is nowworking its way through theKnesset which will outlawthe use of Nazi imagery.The measure, proposed byUri Ariel, a right wing MKfrom the National Unionbloc, would prohibit allforms of the word “Nazi” orsimilar sounding words;any epithets associatedwith Nazism, the ThirdReich or any of its leaders;the wearing of striped cloth-ing resembling that worn byprisoners in concentrationcamps and yellow stars likethe ones Jews were forcedto wear during theHolocaust.

Civil rights groupsin Israel have, predictably,defended the right to useNazi imagery and expressedconcern that the law willimpose restrictions onIsraelis freedom of speech.For Haggai Elad, executivedirector of The Associationfor Civil Rights in Israel,“the true test for freedom ofspeech is exactly when peo-ple are using language orsymbols that are offensiveto some or even all mem-bers of society”.

We would hope thatElad’s views have noimpact on Israeli legisla-tors. No one has a prob-lem with the haredi con-fronting their secular oppo-nents. Orthodox Jews haveevery right to protest theactions of those who intheir opinion are forcing

We have longdeplored the use ofHolocaust imagery. Alabour leader objecting tothe negotiating tactics of hisemployer labels him a Nazi.A group of protesters rally-ing against government cut-backs accuses the govern-ment of resorting to tacticswhich would have madeHitler proud. Police arelikened to “storm troopers”when they try to disperseunruly mobs.

It is difficult to imag-ine that North Americas andEuropeans who use Nazisymbols and imagery do notfully comprehend that theHolocaust was unique in thenumber of its victims, in thebestiality of the criminalswho were responsible for it,in the limitless sufferingthat was inflicted uponthose whom “the FinalSolution” was intended todestroy.

But if we give thesesupposedly ignorant non-Jews the benefit of the doubtwe are certainly not preparedto do the same for Jews whomake light of the sadisticcruelty that engulfed theGerman nation, who showno respect for the memory oftheir hapless fellow Jewswho were stampeded to theirdeaths.

And so we areappalled by recent events inIsrael where haredi extrem-ists acted as if they hadnever seen photos of theemaciated concentrationcamp inmates. At a demon-stration recently in BeitShemesh ultra-OrthodoxJews paraded their childrenaround in mock black andwhite Holocaust clothing.Children and adults woreclothing adorned with theStar of David bearing theword “Jude”. I.F. Stone, thefamed investigative journal-ist, probably took part insome interesting Passoverseders in his time, but henever spent one with Jewswho felt personally connect-ed to the events in ancientEgypt--until 1947, when hewas a guest at a remarkableseder with Holocaust sur-vivors in a detention campon the island of Cyprus.

“This is being writ-ten 3,000 feet up over theblue Mediterranean,” beganStone’s dramatic account inthe pages of the New YorkCity daily newspaper PM. “Iam in a tiny four-passenger

two-motored mosquitoplane bound for Haifa fromNicosia in Cyprus, where Ihave just spent the first twodays of Passover in campsestablished by the British tointern ‘illegal’ Jewish immi-grants seized in Palestine.”

Those were turbu-lent times. Hundreds ofthousands of Holocaustsurvivors crowded theDisplaced Persons camps inAllied-occupied Europe,

waiting for British permis-sion to immigrate toPalestine. The British, bow-ing to Arab opposition, hadalmost completely shut thegates to the Holy Land.Palestine itself was inflames, as Jewish under-ground forces waged guer-rilla warfare against theBritish authorities.Meanwhile, in Washington,the Truman administrationwobbled back and forth on

the controversial issues ofJewish immigration andstatehood.

In a desperate racefor the promised land, sur-vivors were boarding aliyabet (unauthorized immigra-tion) ships bound forPalestine. More often thannot, they were interceptedby British naval patrols andtaken to Cyprus. That’swhere I.F. Stone’s storybegan.

THE UNTOLD BUO-NANOTTE STORY: Whennoted Jewish publicist FredAvertick invited me to joinhim for lunch at RestaurantBuonanotte(http://www.buonanotte" www.buonan-otte), I was looking forward tomeeting owners MassimoLecas, Robert Pesut, AngeloLeone and Lino Lozza.Besides the very trendyBuonanotte, now celebrating20 years on Boulevard St.Laurent, they also own Globejust up the street and Rosalieon Avenue de la Montagne.Well, a lot has been writtenabout these dining establish-ments, but here is a story thathas yet to be told.

Luciano Lecas,Massimo’s dad, feels a soli-darity with the Jewish people.He finds any acts of intoler-ance unacceptable and mem-ories of the Holocaust givehim the chills. Luciano helpsout in the kitchen, whippingup some of the best barleysoup and gnocchi I have evertasted. Over lunch he sharedwith me the fact that whilegrowing up in Italy his auntwas put in prison by the Naziallied Fascist government for

allegedly helping the parti-sans. Luciano’s mom wouldvisit her sister and became soincensed with the situationthat she ended up becominginvolved with the under-ground movement. It wasbecause of this activity thathis mom was sent to BergenBelsen, where she was mur-dered. An aunt and unclewere among the many execut-ed at Auschwitz andBuchenwald. “I was 15 yearsold when I lost my mother,”said Luciano. “I am now 83and a day does not go bywithout thinking about her. Itstill hurts”

Luciano ended upcoming to Canada. He workedfor a number of Jewish-owned companies. Before hisformal retirement, he oversawthe distribution of Italianpublications for BenjaminNews. He spends most morn-ings at Buonanotte, whichhas a large Jewish clientele.This is the place where moviestars hang out while in townand professional hockey play-ers come to dine and for anightcap. For most of heryoung life, Ms. Feldman

Shecould not accept the factthat women were notencouraged to pursue acareer, that they existedmerely to attend schooluntil they were ready to bemarried. She wanted toexplore the world outsideWilliamsburg, and so sheembarked upon secret tripsto Manhattan. Her curiousnature led her on a path ofself-enlightenment. Sheread English languagebooks by popular and clas-sic novelists which shecarefully hid under themattress of her bed.

As he strolledaround the camp the nextday, Stone was impressedby the vibrant life heencountered among theCyprus exiles. “Life flows onstrong, and vigorous babiesare being born at the rate of30 to 40 monthly,” hereported. “There have beenalmost 600 weddings sincethe camps were establishedlast August, and there were135 nuptials during the twoweeks before Passover.”

“There are schoolsand synagogues, campnewspapers, an art exhibi-tion, and workshops,” notto mention “several soccerteams which often play theBritish guards and boastthey have never been beat-en.”

What did the futurehold?
