while they’re all from new zealand originally, many are now doing amazing things abroad – from teresa moore (model) in new york, to jessie bush (blogger – we the people) in london, to tania gacic (model/blogger – my empirical life) in australia, alisa xayalith (musician – the naked and famous) in los angeles to local fashion blogger katherine lowe (kathrine is awesome) still based here in new zealand. each of our collaborators has an amazing sense of style – we’ve followed them all for some time, admiring each of their individual aesthetics independently from one another! while each has their own unique point of view when it comes to a fashion, collectively we feel this ‘set’ really speaks to our brand and our customer about what the modern women is always looking for in her own look – personality, confidence and timelessness.

WHAT IS WINTER DRESS WEEK ALL ABOUT?dress week is a moochi event that comes around twice a year for us that is all about celebration – of dresses, of dressing up, of going out, of having fun. a celebration of everything that’s good about being a girl! we’ve taken that amazing feeling you get when you put on your favourite dress and created an event around it, with a range of beautifully designed dress styles launched in limited numbers, to dress a girl for all her occasions.

CAN YOU TELL US WHAT THE MOOCHI STYLE SET PROJECT IS ALL ABOUT?we’re constantly being inspired by the women working with and around us who love to explore fashion and have fun with their own style. with our upcoming dress week event we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate new zealand made fashion and new zealand made women who are not only doing amazing things in their individual fields here and abroad but who always manage to look good doing it. we were excited by the idea of seeing how each of these collaborators would translate their style into a bespoke moochi piece, exploring what could be achieved creatively by working together.

WHEN WILL THE DRESSES BE LAUNCHING AND WILL EACH DRESS BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE?the moochi style set collection will be launched in limited numbers in store on may 16 as part of our winter dress week event and will also be available to purchase online from this date.

WHAT WAS THE CRITERIA IN WHICH YOU CHOSE YOUR FIVE WOMEN AND WHO ARE THEY?we’re thrilled to be working with a talented group of woman from the fashion, music and creative worlds.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

ALISA XAYALITH

the naked and famoussingerlos angeles

WHERE IN NZ DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT NZ?i grew up in papatoetoe in south auckland. i had a pretty colourful upbringing coming from a laotian family. my favourite thing about nz is that we live in a multi-cultural country and we are so close to the sea side. after travelling around the world, i realise how much i took that for granted growing up. we have a really beautiful country and the sea side is one of my most missed things about nz.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IS REPRESENTED IN THE DRESS YOU’VE DESIGNED?i think my personal style is pretty tidy, simple, chic and timeless it can look a little unhinged but it all comes together somehow. the jumpsuit i’ve designed is a piece that is made to last the years and i would like to consider it a wardrobe staple.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH THE NAKED & FAMOUS?i’ve always loved music ever since i was a kid. i’ve been singing for as long as i can remember. it wasn’t until i met aaron short and thom powers at mainz that we really started something. the naked and famous is my first musical endeavour. so far, i’ve been pretty lucky that the hard work i put in has gifted me an international career. it took us 4 years before we were catapulted out of nz and onto international shores.

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN NZ INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?i dress pretty casually for the most part - something i think is very ‘new zealand’.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IS REPRESENTED IN THE DRESS YOU’VE DESIGNED?i like my clothes simple, i like navy and black and white and grey marle. i kept that pared back aspect in mind when helping to design the dress. the final result is clean but with small details (the polka dot sleeve, especially) to keep it interesting.

WHERE IN NZ DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT NZ?i grew up in sleepy marlborough. it’s raw beauty and untouched land - i love how easy it is to drive (or even walk) a short distance and end up with an amazing view and no one else around.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IS REPRESENTED IN THE DRESS YOU’VE DESIGNED?i’m rather partial to black and all things minimal - and the lack of embellishments reflect my personal style pretty accurately. i also love subtle details - an unexpected neckline or a sexy drop at the back (which is exactly what my dress has going on, surprise, surprise).

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN NZ INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?it may have changed in recent years but i feel like growing up in nz it was all about every shade of black. i think that’s down to the fact that kiwis love a touch of dark humour, plus we tend to play it safe (not that i’m saying that’s always a bad thing). i’m also drawn to more casual pieces - which no doubt is a result of growing up in small town nz where there was little need for a killer pair of heels.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT NZ? i love the beautiful rainforests, expansive beaches, the coromandel , bay of plenty, nz sarcasm and sense of irony, the way nz has always lead the way in women’s/social/green/activist issues and of course - the best pinot noir in the world!

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN NZ INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?in new zealand i discovered hip-hop, grunge & house music. these milestones are still a part of my personal style- whether through high top sneakers, a flannel shirt or acid brights. new zealanders have a unique and quirky sense of style and appreciate individuality

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?i have coined sartorially bi-polar to describe my style, although, perhaps sartorial multiple personality disorder is more accurate. i guess i just wear things i like when i feel like it. one day that is park avenue princess, the next it’s downtown normcore, the next it’s colour clash etc...my partner pav runs a record label so i have a foot in both the fashion and music worlds as well as being a mother. i suppose this influences the different ways i dress as the occasions are always so different!

TERESA MOORE

HOW IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE REPRESENTED IN THE DRESS YOU’VE DESIGNED?i think this dress reflects my personal style with the comfort and casualness of the cut, while still looking urban and cool and a bit sexy to show off your best assets- legs and neckline.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL ROUTINE YOU FOLLOW WHEN PREPPING FOR A BIG EVENT OR SPECIAL OCCASION?i usually get a gel manicure, a microdermabrasion facial and then spend time planning my outfit appropriate to what the event is. i think listening to music while getting ready always gets you excited.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A MODEL?i started modelling when i was 14 in high school as i was scouted on the street and from there i have been lucky enough to build a career, work all over the world and work for clients like w, elle, ralph lauren, h&m, rolex and l’oreal.
