system. This controlled theoxygen, temperature andpressure inside the suit.Onthe surface, the astronautshad to get used to thereduced gravity. They

Returning to EarthReturning to Earth
After re-entering the Earth'satmosphere, parachutes opened tosafely lower the Columbia into thePacific Ocean. After landing in theOcean, the crew were retrieved bya helicopter and taken to therecovery ship, the "USS
Hornet."The crew and lunarsamples were placed in quarantineuntil their health and safety couldbe confirmed.
The Command Module "Columbia"returned to Earth on July 24, 1969.
Apollo 11 had successfullycompleted its mission. PresidentKennedy's objective to land menon the moon and return themsafely to Earth had beenaccomplished.
