ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014

Page 2: Mor annual giving 2014

At Morrison’s Academy our purpose is to provide a first-class education. We do this through a combination of skilful teaching, widespread participation in co-curricular activities, a wealth of leadership opportunities and supportive pastoral care. We want all our young people to be confident, articulate, motivated and self-disciplined with a wide range of interests.

AIMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Through the generosity of our community of former pupils, current and former parents, governors, trusts and corporate friends, we have been able to offer bursaries totalling £249,522 this year (£187,141 in 2012-13) in pursuit of the School’s policy of making a Morrison’s Academy education more widely available.

We aim to produce confident young people who question and challenge within a spirit of humility, who put our many visitors at their ease, who are courteous and good humoured, have a sense of

social responsibility and, above all, can think for themselves. These precious qualities are embodied in the thousands of former pupils who have gone out from Morrison’s Academy to lead rich and rewarding lives.

2013-14 saw a splendid set of examination results. The Intermediate 2 pass rate remains high at 97% (96% in 2012-13). Our first batch of National 5 results, with a pass rate of 95%, was consistent with Intermediate 2. The S5 Higher pass rate of 91% was very strong and an improvement on the previous year.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL

We do all we can to enrich the curriculum through, for example, the Civics programme and expeditions in the local area and beyond Crieff.

Last year, for example, there was a History and Geography field trip to St Andrews, the senior scientists undertook laboratory work at the University of Dundee, S2 travelled to the First World War battlefields, in the autumn half-term a party of linguists visited Spain, another group went to Wurzburg and a third took part in an exchange to Thonon-les-Bains, near Geneva. A Geography field trip travelled to California, a group took part in the Wilson Trail Relay Race in Hong Kong, a party went mountain biking and trekking in Norway and another group learnt to surf at Machrihanish. This is not an exhaustive list.

The School provides a wide range of leadership opportunities in which all pupils are encouraged to participate, embracing traditional team activities and individual sports, outdoor pursuits, debating, CCF, Young Enterprise, the Duke of Edinburgh and John Muir Award Schemes, and the Pipe Band.

Music and drama feature prominently in the wider curriculum. Public performances in support of community events are a regular feature of the calendar, the Pipe Band’s March trip to New York to lead the Tartan Day parade up Sixth Avenue being the most distant venue.

OUR DONORS 2013/14

All our pupils benefit from the generosity of our donors, some of whom are listed below and others who prefer to remain anonymous. We would also like to recognise Morrison’s Academy Parents’ Association (MAPA) and the many parents, staff and friends of the school who are so generous with their time, energy and gifts-in-kind in support of the school.

Thank you. Working together we can make a difference.

HOW DID WE INVEST? WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE?

£598,412 was invested last year in the maintenance and renewal of fabric and equipment. One of the science laboratories in the John Smith Building was completely refurbished and will act as a model for the upgrading of the remainder. During the summer holiday much work was undertaken to improve the school including upgrading the IT infrastructure, a new boiler for the swimming pool and a new heating system for the John Smith Building.

The Music department teaches nearly 300 individual instrumental lessons a week and runs 16 ensembles such as the Chamber Choir, the Jazz Band and the School Orchestra, converted one of its rooms into a modern digital recording studio, as a result of a substantial family donation.

During the year, a total of £73,008 (£67,038 in 2012-13) was donated to the School. As the work of the Development Office grows, this level of income will increase and be used in support of new equipment, capital projects and the provision of bursaries.

KEY

We want our Development Office to create a network of former pupils, parents, trusts and corporate friends that extends out beyond Perthshire to wherever Morrisonians have settled; a network that will promote friendship, provide opportunities and support for former pupils and organise events to bring members of the community together.

We seek to encourage investment in the school and to realise the Board’s vision of a fully endowed bursary scheme and a phased programme for the redevelopment of the school’s facilities and buildings.

We already offer bursaries, but not enough. We would like to reach out further and provide financial assistance to any pupil who would benefit from the life-changing opportunity that is a Morrison’s Academy education. In so doing we would be fulfilling the wishes of our founder, Thomas Morrison, and our charitable purpose. Former pupils, staff and governors are all being encouraged to join the legacy programme and leave money to the endowment fund in their wills. Separately, in real time, and with immediate impact, former pupils and friends can sponsor individual boys and girls directly through the school via the Patrons Programme.

To remain competitive, the redevelopment of the School’s facilities and buildings is essential. The plan involves the division of the School into two campuses, the teaching campus being based on the main site with a sports campus down at Dallerie. Over the next 20 years we will construct a new Primary School, reconfigure the Ferntower Building and create an academic and sixth form centre, as well as a performing arts and refectory complex, on the footprint of the present-day sports hall and gym.

Little of this will be achieved without your help; working together we can make a difference.
