Global Student Embassy Fundraiser on June 1
st.
This week the club received an email from Mallory Bressler from the Global Student Embassy (GSE) organization. You may recall that we had a program from GSE describing the student garden that they are running at Campolindo High School. Global Student Embassy is having our first annual fundraiser in Contra Costa on June 1st 2-5pm at the
Lafayette Library and Learning Center. We are going to have local bites, wine, live music, a silent
auction and a student photo and art exhibit. I will be speaking as well as two super star students from
our program in Lamorinda. We would love to have the support of Moraga Rotary at the event and I was wondering if you could include information about the
event in your next newsletter and possibly at your next meeting.
I am attaching our Save the Date and sponsorship packet (in case you think anyone in your club has a local business
that might be interested in sponsoring the event in exchange for some great promotion). We hope to have
about 150-200 guests! We will be raising money for program costs at all 4 schools in the AUHSD as well as our
programs in Nicaragua and Ecuador.
Tickets can be bought online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/660319.
Let me know if you have any questions and we hope to see
many people from your club there!
TODAYS PROGRAM
Our speaker today was Mark Orr, Director of Athletic and Recreational Facilities at St. Marys College. Mark was introduced by club member Kevin Reneau. Mark attended a Christian Brothers High school in Sacramento before attending Cal with an athletic scholarship.
Mark Orr, Director of Athletics, St. Marys College and our speaker this evening.
Mark began by describing his athletic career at Cal. He was injured in each of his first two years but was able to play football for Cal under both Steve Mariucci and Tom Holmoe. He realized that he would not be able to play professional sports and decided to move towards the administration of athletic programs. Mark was hired 14 years ago as an assistant Athletic Director by Carl Clapp. He was named Athletic Director eight years ago. Mark went on to describe the new athletic pavilion that is being constructed on campus. This $23 million project, which provides recreational facilities for the students, will open early next year and provide a state-of-the art facility for St. Marys. He also discussed the renovation of McKeon Pavilion offering 500 more seats and a new weight room for St. Marys athletes. Mark described the schools athletic programs as a balance between sports excellence, academic achievement and community service. He mentioned activities with Childrens Hospital, homeless shelters and the basketball teams participation in our athletic field day next week as examples of community service by the athletes. Mark convinced us all that God is a Gael!!.
