Richmond Rotary project. . . . Lou Roesslerwasgiven a surprise birthday party last Saturday, whichwas doubly surprising since his birthday was morethan two months ago. . . . . Guest Edy Schwartzgave a High Five because the generous and timelydonation of $3,000 by Moraga Rotary changed thelife ofDiego Rios and his family. They now havelegal residency cards, and Diego is still enrolled atSt. Marys College. . . . . . . . Guest Derek Zemrakgave a Happy Buck because after all the turmoil

over the access at the Rheem Theater, he hadnthad the chance to meet Cliffuntil now. (Well worththe dollar, he said).

The raffle ticket worth $10 was drawn by Mary SueErickson, but she failed to find the white marble inthe vast sea of clear ones. Funny how theEricksons have the knack of picking the best raffleticket, somehow.

~~PROGRAM -- CAIFF~~A very interesting program about the California

Independent Film Festival (CAIFF) was givenby Moragan Edy Schwartz and DerekZemrak, operator of the Rheem andOrindaTheaters. Edy has been very active inMoraga affairs since moving here in 1967;among other things, she has been President ofthe Chamber of Commerce and MoragaCitizen of the Year in 2010. Derek grew up inMaine and was profoundly affected by a movietheater closure in his home town.

    This year is the 14

    th

year for CAIFF, and the 4

    th

to be held in the Rheem/Orinda Theaters.Last year, they sold more tickets than everbefore. The films to be shown are judged thebest of all the submissions, where most film-makers are hoping to get more exposure.

The film festival features some full lengthdramatic films, several documentary films, andmany short films. Most people get their start inshort films, which are often very low budget

and are financed by family and friends. Thisyear, 31 short films will be shown, in groups.

Derek helped start the Sapporo (Japan) FilmFestival, where 90 films are shown out of about3,000 submissions. He picks five of the filmsshown at Sapporo to show at CAIFF. Some oftheir recommended films are: Le Weekend, shown on opening night; Death of a Shadow, and A River Changes Course.

Tickets for each showing may be purchasedon-line (recommended) atwww.caiff.org, or atthe Rheem or Orinda Theaters. No seasonpasses are available, but there are variouslevels of membership at different prices andbenefits.
