KEEPING IN TOUCH...

Sunday was a magnificent day in worship. Aside from being World Communion Sunday, the music was uplifting and energetic, led by our “new” choir! The dedication of two children, along with many family visitors, and the good eating during the “bread feast” in Robinson Hall added up to a wonderful morning. The church felt “alive.”

It’s not always that way. As a child I had a friend whose father did some serious sleeping in his pew, especially during seasons when the sermons got pretty heavy. And I remember one church where there was a very nice fellow who used to count the panes in the stained glass windows during the sermons, and would emerge from church after the service with a triumphant smile and announce to the pastor: “Three hundred and twenty four in the Lamb of God!” He actually sat in the balcony one Sunday and counted the rear rose window by using a mirror – pretty ingenious! I suppose I should be thankful that we don’t have any stained glass windows in our sanctuary.

I had one church member who counted the number of times I would use the same word in a sermon. After telling me this, I became much more cautious about repetition. Although one Sunday I gave her a treat and intentionally repeated one word just to see if she could keep up. She did!

I used to think that Choirs were some of the best listeners. One friend of mine was very impressed with the attention of his choir, until he found out that they had developed an little game. They would look for words in the sermon which began with letters that went through the alphabet.

They started with “A” and then waited for “B” and so on. Things always slowed up when they reached “Q”, and few ever got beyond “X”.

Alas, there are some preachers who are spoil sports and deliberately try to come up with interesting sermons which can destroy the fun. As one person said to me as he came out of church very grumpy, “You really blew it this week. I got to listening and lost my count three times. Don’t let this happen again!”

Church should be fun! After all, good news is GOOD NEWS! I can hardly wait to see what ingenuity you devise! See you in church,

Dr. Stanley D. Smith Intentional Interim Pastor

The Outreach Committee of DMCC has learned of a program, with one of our sister churches where they use empty medicine containers for making up hygiene kits for their homeless program. They need 150 containers per month. We want to start collecting empty medicine containers to help them. A special box is labeled especially to collect all empty medicine containers in Robinson Hall. Please remove all labels. Thank you.

Ignite was a great success this past September 28, 2013!!

The “All Church Retreat” held Friday evening October 4 and Saturday, October 5 used the “Appreciative Inquiry Process”, which seeks to discover the core values of the congregation. Forty-five people participated in the process, which resulted in two working groups. When ratified by the Administrative Board, one group will deal with “A Sense of Belonging and Hospitality” and the second group will focus on “Service to the Community”. Even if you could not attend the retreat, you no doubt enjoyed the positive results in Blended Worship Sunday morning!

As we joined in worship, last Sunday, October 6, we also joined with Christians worldwide on World Communion Sunday. It is always our desire that our oneness in Christ grow deeper and more loving, which God surely desires! As we joined during the Blended Worship we truly did feel as “One in Christ”.

It was exciting to have two children dedicated this past Sunday, October 6.
